Part Twenty-Five: Vindicare

Triumph, moon of Eclipse
Georgia Quadrant

Not long after Ivers is taken by the deputy to a temporary cell to be strip-searched and cleaned up, Deputy Lisbet shows up at the ship carrying several large flimsies rolled up in a tube. She holds them up. "Sat survey of the area you wanted," she says. "You guys really want to go after Devon?"

Elgyn weighs several possible responses in his head. "He deserves going after, Deputy." he finally murmurs, a little calmer now that Ivers is no longer present.

Solbiort waves a hand to Elgyn, "Start rolling them out on the floor, pretty," then nods to the deputy, "Nihao. Deputy Lizbet, ya? Captain Solbiort, und ve haf here also First Mate Raj und Elgyn und elsevhere is Nigel, doctor und engineer, und Molly on Bridge." Lisbet nods, her scarred face displaying no immediately readable emotion as she hands the flimsies to Elgyn. Elgyn nods and takes them from Lisbet, spreading them out and finding weights to hold them down as he starts to study them.

Solbiort says, "Your fellow deputy has prisoner in von of our passenger cabins -- former brigand vith Devon. Also haf girl in sick bay whom prisoner bring in, who vas von of captured Jains... und am thinking you haf already met Kaushal und..." she sighs, waving at the older gentleman, "Shuh-muh, but still am not remembering your name?""

The older Jain ducks his head. "My name is Vikas," he says quietly."

Lisbet nods slowly. "Aye, I've met them. A bit surprised that events took this turn surroundin' them, but nothin' to make of it. So. What made you decide to help them?"

Solbiort waits for everyone to nod or greet each other, then adds thoughtfully, "Am thinking is not smart to be Jain out in vilderness und alone, but to each their own. However, am also thinking if villages band together und get a little assistance perhaps, should be possible to take out von band of malicious bandits." She studies the scarred woman, adding quietly, "Vould appreciate any advice you haf to offer, deputy. Und more to the point... vhen there is unrest elsevhere, Triumph has only its own to depend on. Therefore, more ability to care for each ozzer, the better, neh?" She smiles lazily, "That vorked last time I vas here, at least."

Lisbet taps her chin. "We tried helping the Jain village, and it was only afterwards that we learned that other villages have been preyed upon by Devon's scofflaws. But they never asked for help, and after last year we didn't have the womanpower to send. But maybe if we can get them to communicate better, and nudge 'em... yeah, that might make them less easy targets for Devon and his ilk."

Solbiort nods, "Exactly."

Lisbet shrugs a little. "All right. I can understand you wantin' to limit involvement of the sheriff's department in this case, considerin' you're worried about a plant in the department. So... ball's kinda in your court. What're you proposin'?

Solbiort says, "Vell, frontal attack didn't vork so vell. Can't chust use poison, since Jain kids are there too. So ve have couple of possibilities: mild poison to make zem all ill, track zem down und pick zem off handful at a time, or figure out vhere next attack is due und ambush zem." She considers a moment, then looks at Raj, "Got any ozzer ideas, Raj?"

Nigel wanders back in, looking seriously perturbed. Solbiort glances over at Nigel a touch worriedly, raising an inquiring eyebrow. Raj thinks a moment, then says, "If we're on a short schedule, there's not much we can do that's subtle. Do we think Liao's for real? He might have some information we can use: when they plan to move on the next town, current strength, any changes in the operation, and so on."

Elgyn grimaces...while he'll use maps, the map is a simple rendering of what is there. He calls Kaushal over to better explain areas on the map as far as terrain conditions. Kaushal helps Elgyn to understand the maps, though it's a bit hard for him as well. Still, the large flimsies are standard Alliance Geocartographical Survey interactive charts, with the contours and symbols overlaid atop the satellite imagery and synthetic-aperture radar maps.

Solbiort considers a moment, lightly tapping one finger against her lips as she thinks. Finally she nods slowly, "Is qvite possible Liao is plant for here, Raj. Is so very apologetic -- even to saying he deserve beating from Angel. But if ve keep him unable to contact anyvon outside here, und ve verify all his information via satellite... could be useful?"

Thinking out loud, Raj says, "It would be better if our initial strike could get as many as possible. Any follow-up will certainly find them more prepared. Anything that's not decisive will scatter them, too." He nods at the Captain's comment about a plant and continues, "I was wondering about him being a plant, too. Anything support that? Any reason for them to think they should try to place an agent amongst the Jains or this town?"

Solbiort says, "Vell, Liao already say he believe there is von in Jain's town. Haf been told repeatedly Devon is military trained, und growing stronger und more cruel. Past that... neh, nozzing in particular." She glances over at Nigel again, stepping to stand beside him and murmur softly, "How is girl, di-di? She is resting now?"

Nigel crosses his arms across his chest, looking downright angry, "She's getting some gorram rest at least."

Elgyn looks up. "Not that I have any reason in particular to believe him, Captain... but he might be the real thing. As it is right now, it would seem that Devon and his group are well off. They can get whatever they want, whenever they want. If he tried something more ambitious, though, like trying to spread out from his territory, that would leave him more exposed, more stretched out... and would almost certainly make the Feds take him more seriously."

Solbiort nods slowly to Nigel, her gaze thoughtful. She murmurs quietly, "Ve talk more later, di-di, ya?" Nigel nods shortly to Solbiort, still showing signs of that nervous irritation. Then she looks up to Elgyn, "Ya, is also possibility. Simply covering contingencies. Am vondering mostly... vhy ozzer villages not ask for assistance? Very strange." She looks at the two Jains, "Either of you know?"

Lisbet looks steadily at Nigel for several long moments, then a dark cloud passes over her face. She nods brusquely to Elgyn. "That's gorram right," she assents. "If he was any more of a problem, it'd be his ass the federales would be going after 'stead of those pirates."

Raj says, "There's a possibility. Anything we can do to get them on his case?" He turns to the deputy and asks, "Unless that's something you'd rather avoid?" He looks sidelong at Lisbet, "Any chance they're connected? Or plausible to be so?"

Amodini says, "They're even more isolationist than we are. They moved out into the outback to be away from other people, for better or for worse. Their communities were established when Triumph was colonized, and most of us didn't expect this aspect of... civilization to ever be an issue. They're a rather varied lot; I don't think there was anything more involved than a telegraph or single terminal in each community."

Solbiort raises a thoughtful eyebrow again, folding her arms and considering that. "Hm... good qvestion. Pirates haf ships, or no?"

Lisbet shakes her head. "The pirates have been tracked by the Federal Marshals Bureau and the 'Liance military for a few months now. No chance they're connected to Devon."

Solbiort rolls her eyes in silent exasperation at Amodini's answer. [Greedy boys and their toys!] she thinks with weary amusement. Then she holds up a hand, "Vait, let me be sure I understand, Amodini. You are telling me these villages vill not even help defeat brigands -- vhich are actually attacking zem?!"

"No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that before last year, we didn't have more than passing contact with them. We had no idea that they were being attacked by Devon's brigands. I think most of them had no clue of half the other towns Devon has been attacking."

Solbiort shakes her head slowly in amazement, "Uh tzai chien shr ee-ding ruh dao shuh-muh run luh bah... hokay, so none of these villages communicate viz each ozzer. So first order of business: get zem communicating, so they can vork togezzer on defense!" She looks at Amodini, "This you can do?"

Amodini nods. "I've... sent messages, and had some brief correspondences with the nearest four communities. There are two others beyond them that Devon has been attacking, that I know of but have not yet spoken with. I think they have the terminal only as a courtesy to the magistrate and forget to turn it on for the most part...."

Solbiort nods, "All right, is simple, then. Vonce villages are in communication, next von attacked must alert all ozzers. Elgyn, Kaushal, find out from Liao vhere brigands lair so ve know vhich path they take to leave, und then find either high, narrow mountain trail or broad open area they must cross to get zhere. Ve mark those on map so can simply strafe brigands there." She shrugs, "Aerial ambush mean no more brigands."

Elgyn nods agreeably. "High ground wins."

Lisbet arches a brow. "Aerial ambush? We don't have any gunned skiffs available."

Solbiort gives Lisbet a cold smile, "Amazing vhat von can do viz flaming exhaust."

Lisbet blinks, then half-facepalms. "Ai ya, right. Forgot about that incident."

Elgyn smirks. "There's some folks that found out a while back you don't need guns on a ship to fight back. They got pretty well cooked."

Raj says, "Aerial attacks only go so far. We'll need to make sure we have people on the ground for this to be effective and, preferably to blow the trail on either side of them. There's a good chance we'll just kill a few and the rest will be impossible to dig out."

Solbiort nods to Raj, "Zhat vill be duty of villagers. Is important zhey learn to band togezzer for defense. Vill not alvays be ships here to take care of zhem, after all." She looks at Amodini and says firmly, "Am offering you piece of advice, vhich is vorth precisely vhat you pay for it, lady. If you vill not fight to defend yourself, live next to those who vill." Nigel nods again, one corner of his mouth twitching up in a smirk.

Elgyn looks thoughtfully at Solbiort. "Is our primary concern engaging the bandits, or do we want to devote some time specifically towards getting the... prisoners free. Meaning, sending in some folks after the main force of bandits has left their encampment."

Solbiort glances at Elgyn, "Primary goal is teaching folks here to defend themselves effectively, pretty. This town already knows. Villages don't."

Raj says, "...and may not actually be interested in doing so, from what we've been told."

Solbiort nods to Raj and shrugs, "If they are not interested, they vill live as chattel of those who vill."

Amodini closes her eyes, then her shoulders slump and she nods. "And it is not right to ask others to fight for those who won't," she says.

Vikas says softly, "Amodini...."

"I know, Vikas. The Jains end with us. The next generation will not learn ahimsa. But we won't ask others to do for us what we won't. The only alternative is thus to fight." She turns to Solbiort. "One is a village of Bnei Menashe, and another is an Orange Catholic splinter. Those two will most definitely fight. Of the other two, I am still trying to understand their culture; one is Zen Buddhist and the other is a mix of Baha'i and Nizari Islam. I do not know if they will fight."

Elgyn sighs and nods, going back to his conversation with Kaushal. Solbiort tilts her head thoughtfully at Amodini, "Vhy you think is evil to live next to those who vill protect you? On my vorld valkyrior are supported by hearthfolk und boys. Ve do not expect our boys to fight if they do not vant to."

"It is not evil; it is hypocritical. If we forsake fighting, why should we ask others to fight for us? The... responsibility is still ours; we have only asked another to do the deed rather than do it ourselves."

Raj shrugs, "I can't argue with that, Amodini. Somebody once said, 'If you want peace, prepare for war.' Seems a pretty fair response, so long as you don't lose sight of that first part."

Solbiort shrugs, not understanding religious convictions, and not wishing to argue with someone who's obviously had a really shitty year so far, "As you vill, lady. How soon you can talk to various villages? Am thinking Devon likely have somevon in each of zem, to encourage zem to be more isolationist und not fight. So you vill need to stay in close contact viz us as vell, und not tell zem about us."

Nigel shakes his head, muttering quietly, "I hate hypocrisy, but it's a damn sight better than layin' down and dyin'."

Amodini considers, then nods. "That makes sense. I can send messages out within ten minutes of getting to a terminal, depending on how much I need to tell them." She glances to Nigel. "Which is why we'd rather fight than lay down and die or be hypocritical."

Nigel inclines his head, "Sorry. Been rubbed a little raw lately. Didn't mean to be offensive." An apology? From Nigel? For being offensive?

Solbiort murmurs quietly, "Nigel, take Amodini to a terminal not on bridge, ching?" Elgyn listens to Amondini talk, and thinks to himself that maybe he should sit down and speak with the woman later. An alternative viewpoint occurs to him in the matter, but now is not the time for it.

Amodini nods to Solbiort, and as she walks with Nigel to a terminal she says, "You were not being offensive, Doctor." Her voice is quiet. "I am grateful for the help you're giving us, especially the treatment you are giving Juhi. We had despaired of ever seeing her again." She sighs, "But to hear what she went through...."

Elgyn's hand reflexively goes to the hilt of his knife, reminded by Amondini's words, and it takes him a moment to unclench. Solbiort gives Elgyn an amusedly raised eyebrow, "Bit twitchy, pretty?"

Elgyn does not smile back. "I am only trying to save my anger for those who deserve it."

Solbiort murmurs calmly, "Might vant to relax a bit until then, or you'll vear yourself out, pretty. Killing in anger chust means is easier for you to be killed by smart enemy." She considers saying something else, then just smiles ruefully, shakes her head, and turns away, "Vell... let me know vhen you haf terrain located like ve need, ya?"

Elgyn nods. "I know," he says softly. Solbiort paces quietly out of Cargo, looking for the deputy and Liao. Nothing much can be accomplished just now until they know the purported location of the brigands' lair. Elgyn seems to be calmer as he quietly asks Kaushal for points of interests on the map. It helps to have something to focus on.

Nigel leads Amodini to one of the few terminals that are unlocked enough to be of any real use outside the bridge. His normally gruff demeanor softens somewhat, "No one should endure being used in that way."

"No, they should not," Amodini agrees, as she sits at the terminal. It takes her a few moments to figure out how to work it; either it is not in her native written language, and/or she is just unfamiliar with this model of terminal -- or terminals in general. "Her mother has been sick with worry and fear this past year; inconsolable. She is convinced of the worst. I do not know how to tell her...." She breaks off and shakes her head.

Nigel's jaw tightens slightly, "It depends on what you believe the worst to be."

Raj says, "You tell her that her daughter is free, alive, and safe, Amodini. That's all she cares about, isn't it? The rest is details to be worked out later, now that there is one."

Amodini considers, then nods. "Yes. That is for the best for now. Thank you." She peers at Raj curiously. "Your accent... Gujarti is your native tongue? What is your world?"

Raj grins a little sheepishly, "You've a good ear. Not much left of the accent. I was born on Bernadette a long, long time ago."

Amodini nods. "Ah, I see. Forgive me, I have been told that there are not a great many speakers of Gujarti in the 'Verse. The ark which colonized Triumph had some groups that shared a common geography on Earth-That-Was, like ourselves and the Bnei Menashe. I imagine there were other arks which also gathered people from the same area, though." She starts typing into the terminal. "The Bnei Menashe actually also speak Gujarti. It is one of the things which we shared during the Exodus despite the religious differences: Jainism came from a variant of Hindu, while the Bnei Menashe believe themselves one of the Lost Tribes of Israel."

Raj looks a bit surprised, "Where I come from, Gujarti's a pretty common language. Bernadette's pretty well traveled, too. Who was it told you there weren't folks using it, Amodini?"

Amodini looks a bit surprised. "Really? Hm. Well." She turns back to the terminal, a small smile on her lips. "That's a rather oddly pleasant surprise. If I ever travel off of Triumph, I'm glad I'll be able to speak my native tongue in at least some places. Several spacers told me this last year, though truth be told they probably kept to the Fringe and did not travel to the Border Moons much."

Raj says, "Well, you'll do fine in some places, but Lingua's pretty much a must if you plan to travel." He pauses a moment considering, then continues, "I thought at least half the folks bound for the Fringe came though Bernadette, especially those of strong faith. Folks out there may keep to themselves a bit too much for my tastes but yeah, Gujarti's still spoken. Not sure how pure it still is, though."

Amodini chuckles softly. "Possibly about as 'pure' as the form we speak. I can't begin to understand how much our languages have changed since we left Earth-That-Was. Perhaps only the Exodus Archives truly know." She finishes typing and nods. "There. The message has been sent eyes-only for the leaders of the six communities. I have told them of what we are facing and what we hope to accomplish, and that Devon might have insiders in their communities."

In talking with Kaushal, Elgyn gets a better understanding of the terrain in the outback. For the most part it's rough and tumble, lots of stone and dirt -- it's mostly undeveloped outside the major agricultural areas. Still, there are spots where scraggly trees and grass have taken root in the relatively untouched soil, spots of nitrate fertility which have been carefully tended. Between that and the work of the local villages, there's some modest subsistence agriculture in place.

But outside the village areas the terrain becomes rather precipitous, with rough trails through rocky, hilly terrain. To Elgyn's eye, there are only a handful of routes that any large body of people might travel, at least if they want to maintain some sort of cohesion. Elgyn mulls over what he's got, and puts together a list of high places overlooking those routes for Solbiort to look over later.

Up in the cabin deck, Solbiort enters the temporary cell. The deputy has apparently finished the strip search, and Liao is currently locked in the fresher; the deputy is putting the aromatic clothing into an incineration bag. The deputy nods to Solbiort. "Ma'am," he says by way of greeting. "He's not carrying anything untoward. In fact outside of a field knife and some survival rations, and some plat, he's not carrying anything."

Solbiort nods, "Goot. Your people haf anything he can vear temporarily, or ve need to find somezing?"

The deputy shakes his head. "I can run to the deputy-house and get a prisoner's coverall, unless you have something here we can stuff him in. Either way he'll be wearing nanocles."

Solbiort thinks a moment, then nods once, "Moment, think ve haf somezing he can use." She'll return shortly with some of the stored clothing of the ship's former piratical crew, "Here, stuff him in this, then get down to cargo viz him vhen done. Need his input."

The deputy nods, and takes the clothing, before rapping on the 'freasher door as Solbiort leaves. "Liao! Time's up, come on out!" Solbiort heads back to Cargo after that, looking for Nigel.

Solbiort re-enters Cargo, looking around and noticing folks all at work... except poor Nigel, who still looks twitchy and irritated. She paces over to the slight doctor and murmurs quietly, "Di-di, vant to talk now?"

Nigel twitches slightly at Solbiort's voice, but then takes a deep breath and grumbles, "Yes, please."

Solbiort smiles faintly, waving a hand, "Come, ve talk elsevhere, ya?" Nigel nods shortly, hands shoved deep into his pockets. He hasn't stopped scowling much since he examined the girl.

Solbiort will settle Nigel in the mess, making them both a cup of tea and bringing over a flask with them. She pours herself a dollop, then looks inquiringly at Nigel as she holds the flask over his cup. Nigel eyes the flask and nods, jaw starting to relax somewhat, though the rest of his body stays taut and jittery. Solbiort pours a healthy dollop into Nigel's cup, then puts the flask away. She settles back with her tea, waiting until Nigel's ready to talk.

Nigel takes his mug and takes a deep gulp of it, hissing as he scalds his tongue with it. He thumps the mug back on the table, "What in the name of Buddha's shiny scrotum makes gorram rutters like that man think they can use somebody else like that?"

Solbiort sighs softly, not really having anything comforting to say about crazy boys drunk on power. Instead she simply murmurs quietly, "Let tea cool first, di-di. Tell me vhat happen, ching?"

Nigel leans back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest, "What happened was that gorram animal and his little pack have been usin' those kids as manual labor and then goin' on and usin' 'em sexually, too."

Solbiort nods, unsurprised. Her voice is a little weary, "Is unfortunately common in var settings to see such, di-di. Boys out of control do bestial things. Vhen this is found, is duty of goot people to put them down, und help the damaged as best ve can."

Nigel laces his fingers together, hands squeezing one another, color rising in the little doctor's cheeks, "Captain, I tell you now, I may be a gorram bastard from time to time, but ain't nothin' ever made me want to hurt someone like this has."

Solbiort leans forward, setting her tea cup aside and reaching out to put one large, scarred hand over Nigel's, "Do not, di-di. Is not your job -- you are vunderbahr engineer und doctor. Need you to help heal the broken. But hurting them... ozzers can take care of zhat, und no need there is to damage you to do so, ya?"

Nigel smirks bleakly, "Oh, I ain't dumb. But I just..." He sets his jaw again, trying to think, "I think I'm sayin' that I wouldn't want us to back down from this now. Was all about principles before, but now it's about that girl in there that's had somethin' that's supposed to be beautiful made into somethin' horrible."

Solbiort nods tiredly, "Ve vill do as much as ve can, di-di." She sighs, sitting back and picking up her teacup again, "Am hoping Elgyn also can get over his need to hurt things to feel better... vell, ve shall see. If you are needing anything to help girl, let me know und ve get it, ya?"

Nigel nods and takes his own tea again, drinking deeply and not burning himself this time, "I'd pay my own money if I needed to, Captain."

Solbiort smiles again, "No need for that yet, di-di, but sheh-sheh." She sighs, "Currently am more vorried for Jains in general. Am not sure vhy they are even out here, instead of... oh, Bernadette, say. Much safer there for pacifists."

Nigel snorts quietly and sighs, "Because you can't spread your ideas if you stay put in safe places."

Solbiort growls quietly, "Cannot spread zem if your children are all stolen from you either... but this is not time nor place to argue zhat." She gulps down the last of her tea, then studies Nigel thoughtfully, "You vill be hokay, di-di?"

Nigel nods, though his knuckles are still while where he's holding his mug, "Yeah. I'm just hoping the kids will be."

Solbiort says softly, "Ve vill get them medical care, und back to their families, di-di. Cannot do better than our best." Nigel nods and goes silent, knowing she's speaking nothing but the truth. Solbiort rises to go, pausing a moment to rest a hand on Nigel's shoulder, "Stay und haf more tea, di-di. Don't need you in Cargo yet, und a breather might help, ya? Need you in goot shape vonce ve go."

Nigel reaches up and pats Solbiort's hand awkwardly, "Will do." Solbiort smiles, squeezing gently, then heads quietly out.

A few minutes later the cargo bay of the ship is relatively a bit crowded. In addition to the crew there are the two deputies, Liao, and the three Jains. Solbiort nods, looking around. "Hokay, ve are all here. Liao, show Kaushal und Elgyn vhere on map brigands hide. Vonce ve know that, ve can figure out vhere vould be best to ambush them."

Liao nods and looks down at the maps. It takes him a few moments to get the bearings straight, then he points to a depression with a spire lording over it. "Here. Beneath that rock formation. The camp is there -- bunch of tents and prefabs." The map labels the formation 'Pilum Longinus.'"

Solbiort nods, looking at the Jains to see if they find that credible. Raj snorts, "Well, we'll see about being a spear in his side, all right." Solbiort grins at Raj.

Vikas nods. "That's about right," he says. "They seem to have headed in that general direction following their raids on us. And it's about equidistant from the other communities."

Solbiort nods, "Goot. Now, Elgyn und Kaushal -- vhere are good ambush spots both close to there, und chust outside each village?"

Kushal kneels down, studying the map, and points out likely good sites to ambush a party sallying forth from the camp. Solbiort nods, watching over the young Jain's shoulder and asking the occasional question about height or winds. Elgyn says, "The most open spaces are closest to the cities themselves... which is both a strength and a weakness."

Solbiort looks up, then says gently, "I know that, Elgyn. I have actually flown combat missions once or twice. Please just tell us where they are?" Elgyn nods and does so. Solbiort nods, studying the map thoughtfully. "All right. Ve haf several choices on vhere to ambush, both near camp und near each village. Ambush spots favor us, though... ve should try to make sure villagers haf goot places to hide und attack also aftervards. Am thinking a combination of attacks vould vork best... first us, then villagers later further from camp."

Solbiort thinks a bit more, then adds quietly, "Of course, this vork only if ve can catch bandits leaving camp. If not, need arrangements for ambushing as they leave villages too." She looks at Raj, "You got any tactical suggestions?" then at Amodini, "How fast villagers move in mountains?" Then she glances up at the deputies, "How goot those satcams are? Maybe ve can see bandits leaving camp viz zem?"

Lisbet scowls. "Not nearly good enough. We might be able to pick up the dust traces, but if he's got someone in the sheriff's department, he'll know we're sending a request to the magistrate's office to change the parameters of the sat's orbit and mission." Solbiort nods to the deputies, then looks at Amodini and Raj.

Amodini considers. "We know the land fairly well, so I imagine we can travel fairly quickly in the mountains. Faster than mules and horses, unless the riders are insane."

Raj says, "We'll want an observer in place as soon as possible, so we'll know when they start to move. A local who knows the territory would be best. A hunter or prospector or such. I don't know how much time we've got to get set up, but we could mine some of the approaches. Nothing fancy, just a couple of good explosions. Limits their choices in the open, and can cut off advance or retreat in the ravines. I'd need some time -- time we may not have -- to set that up once we pick our spots."

Solbiort nods to Raj, then to Amodini, "Excellent. You know somevon like vhat Raj describe?" To the deputies she says, "You haf any explosives ve can use?"

Raj chuckes, "If they're farmers, they've got explosives. They just don't know it yet."

Solbiort glances at Raj in surprise... then nods slowly, "Even better. Ve teach zem how to make, zen. Goal is for zem to be able to defend themselves, after all." She glances at Nigel, "You haf capability to take care of... maybe 10, 20 injured, di-di? If you need more equipment, ask deputies to help viz zat, ya?"

Kushal nods. "I can do that." Amodini looks at Kushal, then reluctantly nods. "Yes. He can do that job well."

Nigel considers, rubbing his chin and then admitting grudgingly, "I'll need help and extra equipment, actually. Nurses. Or at least people trained in first aid."

Solbiort says, "Goot. Raj, you get viz Kaushal und the others, teach them vhat they need to know for explosives, und figure out how to connect securely viz Kaushal, ya? Amodini, how long you expect villages take to respond to you?"

Raj nods, "I'll take care of the communications. We may not have time for much training. Mostly what I need is material, a couple of folks to help, some time to work, a where you want the bad guys to go. The rest is waiting..."

Amodini considers, then shakes her head. "It could be a day, even several. It depends on how often they want to check to see if they have messages on their terminals. The Orange Catholics of Ste. Frances and the Bnei Menesh of Beth L'Chaim will probably respond in a few hours."

Solbiort nods to Amodini, "Vell, ve are on a schedule -- cannot stay here for long, or vill start costing us."
