SNAFU

Sun Oct 20 1902

The two-vehicle caravan continues on towards Adelaide. Unfortunately, before they can reach it night has fallen. They carry on through the night and arrive in Adelaide just as the sun is rising. The city appears to be as deserted as everywhere else on the continent. This one, unlike the others, though, has clearly been the victim of looting. Many of the houses in the suburbs the team drives through on arrival are burned to the ground.

Kavanaugh looks around outside, brow furrowed. ~The plauge didn't start here right away,~ he comments. ~When the Sydney government collapsed, people must have started panicking here.~

Pitch_Black tchs, looking over the wheel. "Worse than after the war," he murmurs. "Graveyard." Kowloon. Who says you can never go home...

Bethpage looks out at the devastation and nods, ~Dying people... or elves having a barbeque.~

Pitch_Black says, "No difference."

Bethpage gives Pitch Black's car an odd look, but shrugs.

Saburo pulls the Hummer over and parks it along the side of the road. ~I'm going to check my map to find a good route through the city core.~

Pitch_Black parks a bit ahead of Saburo and sits back, folding his arms behind his head. "Wake the others in an hour or so and we'll switch again."

Bethpage says, ~As long as we're stopped, I'm taking a stretch break... y'all might want to let the kids find a bush, too. You know kids and car trips.~

Kavanaugh nods to Pitch. "Sounds good. ~Maybe this is a good time for breakfast, actually. Can't save th' world on an empty stomach, after all.~

Saburo says into his communicator, ~I don't think we should let the hostages out until we're in a secure location, Page.~

Bethpage says dryly, ~Well, it's not my upholstery.~

Pitch_Black nods and steps out of the car, standing and stretching. He pulls the band out of his hair and shakes it out a bit, running his hands through it. "Don't wander too far, Page. Doc, if the kids gotta use the euphemism, ask 'em. The Padre and I will watch 'em."

Kavanaugh glances over the back of his seat. "How are you two kids doing back there?" he says gently."

Saburo consults his maps, finding a route through to the core. ~If we stay on the highway here, it will take us into the central core of the city. From there, a secondary highway running north to south will take us to the base.~

The two Dowrani children are curled up on the back seat, both fast asleep. They don't seem to have suffered any ill effects from their time in the vehicle.

Kavanaugh blinks, then grins quietly. ~Ah, they're sleeping. S'okay, let's not wake them just yet.~ He also looks around the back for Yarnchaser.

Dr_Chong says on the comm, ~I say let them sleep as long as they can.~

Pitch_Black says, "Yeah. Let 'em sleep, father."

Bethpage nods silently, pleased. At least they're not awake and scared stiff anymore.

Pitch_Black sits down on the fender of the car, scanning the horizon. He fishes out a cigarette from his pocket.

Kavanaugh looks around the back, then looks around in front, and snorts softly, grinning at the cat curled up and sleeping on the dash. He stretches himself, stifling a huge yawn.

Pitch_Black lights his cigarette, exhaling slowly. "Roads are a wreck up there ahead. Might need to find a way around..."

Saburo takes a cigarette out and lights it, while he waits Page to get back in the Hummer.

Bethpage stretches in the road by the car, scanning the horizon... and straightens slowly, frowning. ~Roads are crap, yeah... and I don't see a single skyscraper up there, guys. Not one.~

Saburo says, "Doctor, did you get a chance to look at those strange devices yet? Or has she been guarding them?"

Pitch_Black says, "Christ."

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~Uh... I've never been here. Should there be?~

Dr_Chong says, "I have examined them a bit, I do not see any obvious way to activate them"

Pitch_Black says, "Yeah... yeah, there should."

Bethpage says, ~We may have to walk... um, yeah, Kav. It's a city-- or it was. There should be tall buildings in the middle. There ain't.~

Kavanaugh murmurs, ~Merde.~

Saburo frowns, and blows a plume of smoke out the open driver's window. ~We may need to find an alternate route then. And I don't think panicing looters would have levelled the downtown core...~

Pitch_Black drags his cigarette, burning it down about halfway. "Hey padre... think you can find us a side road?"

Bethpage ignores the 'guarding them' comment, but checks her pack for that crystal ball again in case the good Doctor's trying to get happy with the alien tech again...

Kavanaugh nods, and pulls up his own maps. ~Lemmie see if I can find something.~

Saburo says, "We'll look into them some more once we're in a secure location, Doctor. When the others aren't watching us..."

Kavanaugh looks over the map, and shakes his head, ~Sorry, folks, the only route I see on the map is through city center.~

Pitch_Black says, "Guess we're walking. We'll get as close as we can."

Dr_Chong says, "Would you like me to take a look at the map?"

Saburo says, "Good idea... Here, plug into my deck..."

Pitch_Black says, "If you've got any ideas, Doc..."

Dr_Chong jacks into Saburo's deck.

Saburo reaches into his backpack, and pulls out a secondary lead, and connects it to his deck. He passes the other end to Doctor Chong.

***Editor, fix the order of Chong and Saburo's poses

Dr_Chong says, "I think I see another way.. Hmm.. If we get near the core, there should be a turnoff so we can go around."

Dr_Chong shows the route to Saburo virtually in the deck.

Pitch_Black squints at the deck display over Doctor Chong's shoulder. "Wait a sec. Wait. Scroll back. Here. G4 through L6."

Pitch_Black says, "I've seen this before."

Saburo says, "Seen what?"

Dr_Chong looks at Pitch and raises an eyebrow.

Pitch_Black says, "Look at this map. Now look down that way, at the road. See how the pavement's thrown?"

Pitch_Black says, "An earthquake hit this place."

Kavanaugh blinks, then deadpans, ~An earthquake....~

Pitch_Black says, "The side-to-side shifting... I've lived on the Pacific Rim my entire life. I've seen this before--" He pauses. It is just like Kowloon. "There were no looters... it's the gas lines.""

Pitch_Black says, "This suburb blew up."

Kavanaugh shakes his head. ~It must've been a firestorm when the pipes ruptured.~

Dr_Chong says, "Although Australia is near the Ring of Fire, it is on it's own tectonic plate. There would normally only be earthquakes here far off shore."

Pitch_Black says, "I know. But can you think of a better explanation?"

Saburo nods. "I think you're right, Pitch... I don't remember ever having seen an earthquake firsthand before, but you're making sense."

Dr_Chong says, "If the Dowrani can call upon the forces of the earth in addition to plague, we have much to fear."

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~Let's not attribute this to them just yet.~

Saburo says, "That just gives me one more reason to want to stop them, Doctor. We'll show the Dowrani something to fear soon enough."

Pitch_Black says, "It doesn't make any sense at all, actually... but I was in Hokkaido for the '06 quake, and Hong Kong for the '09. O"

Pitch_Black says, "I've seen this happen before."

Saburo nods. "Let's see about getting through it, and take a closer look then. Daylight is wasting away."

Bethpage says, ~A natural quake, or something that someone caused, Pitch Black?"

Pitch_Black finishes his cigarette. "Couldn't say... Never used to believe in magic. C'mon, let's roll, it's not safe here." He ties back his hair again and gets back behind the wheel.

When Pitch Black closes the car door the Dowrani boys wake up. The older one nudges the other one with his elbow and says something to him in the Dowrani tongue.

Bethpage hops back into her seat, sighing. At least her legs aren't stiff anymore... for now.

Pitch_Black sighs a bit and crushes his cigarette out in the ashtray. "No funny ideas, boys. Dont make me turn this car around..."

Saburo puts his smoke out, and starts the Hummer back up.

Bethpage says, ~Oi, Black. Did the kids wake up?~

Pitch_Black says, "Yeah."

Pitch_Black says, "I think they're getting restless. May want to switch the Doctor with Kavanaugh here.""

Bethpage says over the airwaves, ~Might wanna get the Doc to ask if they need that euphemism, too-- don't wanna have the SPCE on our butts.~

Pitch_Black says, "More worried about them trying to attack me with the cigarette lighter while I'm trying to drive. We'll need someone to watch them, or take the wheel from me."

Saburo adds, ~I'm more worried about them escaping.~

Pitch_Black says, "You're all heart."

Bethpage says, ~Oh yeah, only you can prevent forest elves. I mean fires.~

Saburo says, "Doctor, why don't you go ride with them?"

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~I can take the wheel if you want, Pitch. Though I agree, at some point Dr. Chong should step in and practice his language skills.~

Dr_Chong says, "Certainly"

Saburo smirks, and replies, ~And you're forgetting what they are.~

Pitch_Black says, "Actually, why don't you hop in the back and let the doc ride shotgun. They're less likely to mess with you."

Bethpage says, ~It would also help our chances of peace-- assuming we don't just wipe out their species soon-- if we had these kids as character witnesses. 'No, Ma, they didn't touch me in funny places-- and they didn't make me wet my pants.' You know.~

Pitch_Black says, "Kentouchigaii da ze, Toshihiro-sama."

Pitch_Black leaves it at that.

Bethpage adds sharply, ~They're kids, Saburo. Enemy kids are still just kids... these might even get a chance to grow up.~

The team sorts out the seating arrangements. Saburo with Bethpage set out in one vehicle and Kavanaugh, Doctor Chong, Pitch Black and the two Dowrani boys in the other. They are able to drive close to the city core, but only because they're driving off-road capable vehicles. As they near the core it becomes clear how much destruction there actually was. The core itself has no skyscrapers left standing, it's full of rubble. Areas outside of the core are very heavily damaged as well and fires seem to have been widespread.

Saburo frowns, biting back his initial reaction. Finally, he says, ~Page, if those kids get the chance to grow up, chances are good mine won't. Or any other human kid for that matter. Let's be professional here. We know what their race is up to. Let's not forget that.~

Saburo looks around, shaking his head. "It looks like gojilla came through here..." he mutters.

The path that Doctor Chong thought he saw turns out to be there afterall. It might not have been there before, but as a result of the massive destruction there is a path. The vehicles are able to get onto a road heading north out of the city, where they find the Air Force Base. It has sustained damage just as bad as the rest of the city and is mostly just a heap of ruins that looks like it might have also been on fire at some point.

Pitch_Black says, "Eight-point-five... or higher. There's no way that could have happened naturally."

Dr_Chong frowns watching the devestation roll by.

Kavanaugh is strictly silent as he looks outside the windows at the devastation; he even manages to resist his impulse to be crossing himself constantly. He got that habit burned out of him in la Legion. ~No... I suppose not. Why do you think they did it? They had the plague, after all, why not stay with that?~ He adds almost wryly, ~unless they were feeling particularly vindictive....~

Pitch_Black tchs. "The why isn't important any more, father. Containment, that's all we care about now."

Saburo says, ~Maybe they didn't want to see the buildings from their village nearby...~

Bethpage says, ~Why could be important... if this city found a way to resist plague, for instance. Not that I really think they did.~

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~That's a good point, Page. Let's keep that in mind with what we may find here. Keep an eye out for bodies, actually....

Pitch_Black says, "I'm starting to believe that this is only going to be resolved with violence. Fond as I am of the judicious application, we're not equipped to fight a full-scale war."

Kavanaugh's voice trails off. "Guys... uhm... I just noticed something. These trees, they're pretty big, must be about thirty of fourty years old...."

Kavanaugh says, "And yet they're busting through the pavement. Even right up about two, three feet just beyond the fence."

Bethpage muses wryly to herself, There's a queer kind of situation, that has me preaching how to be a decent human being at somebody else. She doesn't bother continuing the argument with Saburo past its initial stage, though; waste of energy.

Bethpage says, ~As if.. they suddenly grew bigger, say?~

Pitch_Black says, "Then they're not forty years old, father."

Pitch_Black sighs irritably. "I'm sick of this magic bullshit."

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~Pretty much, Page. And that's starting to be my sentiment exactly, Pitch.~

Pitch_Black says, "So let's get what we came for... if it's still here."

Saburo says, "They're reclaiming the city... putting it back to the way it was hundreds of years ago."

Bethpage says, ~Affirmative, Pitch Black. We can always nuke the island if all else fails. Cheerful thought, really.~

The boys are looking around the area and the older one says something again to the younger one, who nods.

Dr_Chong nods to Saburo, "That is what I fear."

Saburo murmurs in japanese, his voice full of awe. Finally, he stops gawking at the trees, and starts driving again.

Pitch_Black grits his back teeth, and the sound it makes in the subvocal microphone is horrible. "You know, the Third Revolution took my home. I'll be damned if I let a fairy tale steal the rest of my planet."

Dr_Chong says over the comms, ~I did not catch it all, but I heard "close" and "home". I do not like this.~

Saburo pulls through the main gates slowly, driving over their shattered remains. He looks around the base, driving slowly, looking to see what is left of it.

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~'Close to home?' You're right, I don't like that. Let's get what we came here for and get out of here.~

Bethpage inspects the premises as well.

Saburo nods in agreement with Pitch. ~I am with you, Pitch. Keep a close eye on the prisoners. It's likely they'll attempt to escape. Or use those elf balls to contact a rescue team.~

Bethpage says in a slightly choked voice, ~Hell yes. Gotta be careful with those elf balls.~

Pitch_Black stops the SUV and rolls it back a few feet, until the four-wheel drive hubs snap into gear, then proceeds again, slowly. "They do not want me to have to deprive them of their balls, no no no."

Saburo smiles, and turns the Hummer around. A minute later, he pulls up and stops in front of a Heli Pad. The chopper is there, and a large APC is parked nearby.

Pitch_Black says, "Well. Here we are. Let's see if it flies. I believe that's your field, father."

Bethpage stops snickering quietly to breathe the deep breath of the relieved human. ~It's here.~

Saburo parks the Hummer and gets out. He grabs one of his SMG's off the back of his pack before he shoulders it, and tightens the straps. He climbs up onto the helipad, and walks around the chopper, checking it over. ~It's been bumped a round a bit, but it looks to be in pretty good shape...~

Kavanaugh tries not to take notice of that part of the conversation. ~Heh, well, now.... An APC. I wonder....~ His voice actually gets professional. ~Okay, people, be careful here. Watch for booby traps. As for flying it... i'm a wheel man, Pitch, I--~ He breaks off. ~Merde! The APC is German. It must be those German paratroopers who showed up!~

Kavanaugh slips out of the vehicle, his SMG at the ready just in case.

Dr_Chong says, "That would make sense, be careful they may be around"

Saburo opens the door of the chopper to climb in... He freezes, and brings his SMG up into a ready position when he hears the padre's warning.

Pitch_Black slides out from behind the wheel, reaching to rest one hand on the butt of his pistol. "Quiet here--" He pauses and turns to look at the elf boys.

Kavanaugh moves slowly towards the APC, trying to look in the windows. He lifts himself on the balls of his feet, peering at the top of the APC. ~Like most German APCs, this is all metal... and yet there's one Hades of a scorch mark on top of it.~ He circles the APC. "If anyone's in there," he calls out, "you can come on out, we're not going to hurt you. We're in the same situation you are...."

Bethpage adds, ~Unless you're elves...~

Pitch_Black says, "Ich bein ein scheisse, baby."

Kavanaugh, hearing no reply, moves to the driver's side door, trying to look into the windows, and checking to see if the door's been trapped or such. He doesn't even touch the handle just yet.

Bethpage slips out of the car, gun ready.

Saburo climbs into the helicopter, his SCK 100 held in front of him, ready to point or shoot. He checks the back first, before moving towards the cockpit, walking as quietly as he can.

Kavanaugh's nose twitches, then sighs. "Merde," he says quietly. He holsters his SMG, starting to put his helmet on and looking around. "Uh... Pitch... could you come over here, please? And put on your helmet. This isn't going to smell very nice but I might need some help opening the door."

Pitch_Black hrms. "Yeah, I gotcha." He trots over to the APC. "Helmet's in the van. Just count three." He takes a deep breath and holds it, hand on the door.

Pitch_Black nods.

Kavanaugh looks at Pitch for a minute, then nods. "All right, m'son," he says gently. He lightly touches the handle for a moment, as if testing to see if it's hot, and if it isn't, he takes hold of it and pulls it open.

Saburo says over the comm as he creeps toward the cockpit, ~Doctor, keep those kids close.~

Dr_Chong keeps a careful watch on the boys.

Bethpage waits for the men to open the toasty APC, looking around in case new arrivals show up.

Pitch_Black pulls at the same time the priest does, taking a step back and to the side as it opens; raising a hand to his face. He takes another big step back, eyes watering. "Ji ba...!"

Saburo finds the cockpit empty. ~Chopper is clear.~ He slides into the pilots seat, and checks the systems to see if the bird has fuel and power.

Kav shakes his head. ~Pitch get back, don't need you to get sick unpleasant from these poor sods.~ Protected by his suit, he leans in. ~Yeah... I figured. Six bodies in here. All of them pretty well roasted.~

Saburo turns the power on, to check the fuel and engine status.

Dr_Chong says, "Roasted?"

Bethpage says, ~Guess the elves did have a barbeque. Charming folk.~

Pitch_Black takes another breath and shakes his head. "No, I'm all right. Just... a little too familiar, that's all." He straightens up a bit. "Yeah, Doc. This vehicle's trashed. Internal fire."

Saburo says, ~What's going on over there?~

Pitch_Black says, "Six dead Krauts, Saburo. The APC burned. Like the father said, all metal... kind of ironic, you know... Germans in a Dutch oven.""

Dr_Chong says, "Does it look like some kind of tragic accident or can there be no doubt what happened?"

Kavanaugh says, leaning into the APC. ~Not internal. Aleksei said they got caught in a t-storm. It wasn't a natural one, it looks like a bolt hit their APC and went right through it. Which shouldn't normally happen, the wheels are insulators.~

Bethpage snickers at Pitch Black's comment, a bit helplessly.

Pitch_Black says, "Man. I'm going to hell for that one, for sure... so anyway, the gist is that this thing's toasted and so are the Germans, and once again we're up against big magic and impossible odds."

When Saburo turns the power on the cockpit humms to life. Lights turn on and gauges light up.

Pitch_Black says, "Situation normal, I'd say."

Bethpage says, ~Don't worry, Pitch Black, I'll save you a good room. We might even be able to get a nice apartment if the whole team cooperates.~

Pitch_Black says, "Oh, I'm sure there's a little something set aside for all of us."

Bethpage grins.

Saburo grins, and checks the choppers systems out. ~I've got power and fuel in the bird, everything looks good to go. I'll have to check the weapons load out later. We have more important problems to take care of right now. We need to secure this area." He gets up, and heads into the back of the chopper. He approaches the door carefully, weapon ready, and peeks out the door before climbing out.

Pitch_Black says, "So what are we doing with these two? We letting them go, or putting them down now?"

Kavanaugh says from within the German APC, ~That wasn't even nearly as funny as the 'Dutch oven' comment, Pitch.~

Bethpage's grin blanks. ~Goddamnit, Pitch. Don't encourage the death ninja.~

Pitch_Black says, "It's not funny, father. Bringing them along is not exactly feasible. What do you suggest happens the next time we get in a firefight?"

Pitch_Black says, "Tactically, the thing to do is to silence them. However, the part of me that's not resigned to burning in hell for eternity is asking me to take advice on the situation first."

Saburo walks around the chopper, and hops down off the helipad. He circles around the area, checking the perimiter for immediate threats, and assessing the area for defensibility. ~I think we need to question them first. If we execute them, they won't be very useful as bargaining chips.~

Bethpage sighs, and thinks. ~We could turn them loose without their elf-ball and leave... and probably lose all hope of surprise. I don't want to do it either, though, Pitch. Damn straight you go to hell for killing kids.~

Pitch_Black says, "There's the sheer unpredictability, on the one hand. On the other, there's the fuel consumption issue in the chopper. I don't like it any more than you do, but we can't just tote them along with us."

Pitch_Black sighs irritably. "At this stage surprise is hardly an option. I think it's safe to say we're really in the shit either way."

Saburo replies, ~If we turn them loose, they'll lead a warband straight at us.~

Bethpage snorts, ~What, through the air, Saburo? If these kids could fly, they'd be long gone.~

Pitch_Black says, "If we're taking the chopper, that's not much of an issue, Saburo. I'm more worried about them telling their parents about the bird. I don't want to die like a German. On the other hand... we're gambling on not being spotted from the ground anyway. Or spied on magically. It may not be much of a factor at all."

Dr_Chong says over the comms, ~Uhh, guys.~

Pitch_Black says, "Yes?"

Kavanaugh pulls himself out of the APC, shutting and sealing the door behind him, sighing, then tracing a cross over it. "In nomine Deus, requies in pacem, you poor bastards. ~There's nothing in there worth salvaging. Couldn't even find maps or orders for them. Hmm? Yes, Dr. Chong?~

Dr_Chong points toward the forest, ~I swear I just saw a unicorn back in the trees there.~

Saburo frowns, and makes a difficult decision. ~We are not releasing them. If you let them go, or they escape.. they will not get far.~

Saburo says, "A what?"

Pitch_Black says, "It's not your decision to make yet, Saburo-- wait, what did you say?"

Kavanaugh blinks. "A... unicorn, you say."

Pitch_Black says, "A unicorn."

Kavanaugh pauses. "Does anyone here happen to be a virgin?"

Dr_Chong climbs out of the vehicle, and slowly and quietly starts moving in the direction of the woods.

Pitch_Black says, "Hey, don't look at me."

Bethpage says cheerfully, ~Over my dead body, Sab. --Oh, good. We can leave the kids with the mythical babysitter. Uh, sorry Kav.~

Dr_Chong memorizes every detail of the beast with his telescopic vision as he gets closer.

Bethpage walks over to Pitch Black and says, "I'd like to check that out too, but..." she gives a nod toward Saburo and then the kids.

Pitch_Black says, "A virgin... hey, wait a minute." He looks at Kavanaugh, "...aren't you a priest?"

Saburo completes his circuit of the area, having spotted the best places to defend from. He looks around, and sees Chong moving towards the woods. More strangeness afoot. He heads back towards the vehicles, to make sure the prisoners don't make a break for it while the old monk is chasing phantoms.

Dr_Chong picks up some likely grass to try to hold out to it if noticed.

Bethpage says, "Wow. That's pretty, but I bet it's got a hell of a drycleaning bill. I didn't know you could get that white."

Kavanaugh says, ~Just asking.~ He looks into the forest, frowning. ~I'd express hope about that sighting -- unicorns are supposed to be creatures of pure good. Elves don't even have the same rep being for pure-as-the-driven-snow as a... ah... I see it now.... Oh, my...." He casts a sideways look at Pitch. "I wasn't born a priest, m'son," he says wryly.

Bethpage adds thoughtfully, "Bet at least one of the kids is virgin-- they haven't been in a war for very long."

Pitch_Black nods, walking back toward the cars. "Just curious. You know what they said about the Catholic Church back in '02." He frowms a bit, "No excuse for a creature of pure good to be hanging around within a square mile of this outfit, though."

The "unicorn" lifts its head and looks over at Doctor Chong. If it's a unicorn, it's a hornless unicorn. It blinks its big brown eyes and walks towards him. It looks like it's pretty comfortable with humans.

Dr_Chong holds out the grass to the unicorn and tries to say somethings soothing in Antyrii.

Saburo opens the back door of the SUV, to check on the dowrani children. He rests one foot on the door step, so he is clearly in the way of any attempt to bolt out the open door. "Don't even think about trying to run," he says quietly in Japanese.

Kavanaugh deadpans, "I ain't even going to go there. Besides, I'm not strictly Catholic. Much to the Church's relief." He blinks. "Errrrr, that's not a unicorn."

Bethpage says, "Um, guys. It's a horse. Maybe an elf-horse, but just a horse."

Pitch_Black says, "So it's not. It's a big ass horse."

Dr_Chong says, "This is not a unicorn, its a Royal Lippizaner."

Pitch_Black says, "Alright, it's a royal big-ass horse."

Kavanaugh says, "Thanks for clearing that up."

Dr_Chong says, "They were used by nobility in the Napoleonic wars. Now they're show horses, mostly bred in Europe."

Bethpage walks over to the SUV, leans against the side and smiles at Saburo and the children, gun in hand.

Kavanaugh says, "In all seriousness, though... what's one of them doing here?"

Saburo querries, ~It that a German horse?~

The Dowrani children, far from attempting to run, have their faces pressed against the glass on the opposite side of the SUV, looking at the horse.

Dr_Chong pets the horse and looks for signs of a saddle or any human trappings.

Pitch_Black says, "Paratroopers aren't known for riding into battle."

Dr_Chong says, "I suppose if we cannot bring the children, we cannot bring the horse either?"

Saburo just nods to Page. He has one of his large SMG's in hand, resting across his upraised leg.

Pitch_Black says, "Bring it in what?"

Bethpage laughs out loud, grinning, though she doesn't look away from Saburo and the car.

Dr_Chong examines the ground nearby the horse for signs of tracks.

Dr_Chong says, "The horse does have shoes. I can see its tracks as well as other animals, but nothing humanoid."

Kavanaugh frowns. "This is some kind of clue or something. It's not likely to be an elvish horse, it's European...." He looks around. "Hey, uh... Saburo, Page... what are the kids' reaction?"

Dr_Chong follows the horse's trail back a little ways.

Bethpage says, ~Kids are glued to the window. They like it. Or they're hungry.~

Pitch_Black says, "There a difference between elf horses and Euro horses that you're aware of, father? It's a horse."

Dr_Chong says, "The horse seems to have followed a very delibrate straight path coming from the east."

Pitch_Black says, "And honestly, I think we're wasting a lot of time gawking at it when we're sitting in what we assume is enemy territory, and should be on our way."

Bethpage says, ~You know, it's probably spying on us.~

Pitch_Black says, "Along with the cat, Page?"

Kavanaugh makes a quiet sound. "You're probably right, Pitch," he says. He blinks, and holds very still, listening to the conversation.

The horse's ear perk up and swivel and it looks to the north, one foot pawing the ground and it snorts. It sounds.. happy?

Pitch_Black says, "I think we've all finally gone totally fucking insane. Dai gut le si."

Dr_Chong looks to the north, zooming in and out with his telescopic vision.

Saburo nods. ~Yes, we need to scour this base, and get that attack bird loaded out with weapons, then plan our attack. You can bring the horse back here if you like, Doctor. We should question the prisoners too.~

Bethpage says, ~What, are you crazy? Cats can't talk. Of course it's not a spy.~ She snickers.

Kavanaugh says, "Unfortunately, Yarnchaser can Page, at least to me, which makes me worried when you say that. Be that as it may... what's it looking at...?"

Saburo says, "How else did it escape from the elves, Page? For all we know, that's not even Yarnchaser, but some kind of changeling."

Pitch_Black says, "Wait-- are you telling me that you can hear the cat talking?"

Dr_Chong subvocalizes, ~I can hear something moving out here.~

Pitch_Black says, "You're not just talking to the cat like every other crazy old man I've ever met?"

Bethpage stops laughing and subvocs, ~How close, how big, Doc?~

Dr_Chong subvocalizes, ~About 20 to 30 feet away, not sure how big but it is trying to be quiet.~

Saburo straightens up and looks over the roof of the SUV, zooming in on Chong with his telescopic vision.

Kavanaugh moves up towards Dr. Chong. "What, you think I have these long drawn-out conversations with that ungrateful fuzzball just to hear myself talk? But that's for later... what do you hear, Doctor?" He falls silent, pulling his SMG out carefully and slowly.

Pitch_Black walks to the fender of the SUV and kneels down, drawing his pistol. "That's actually a relief. I never thought losing my mind would be so liberating."

Dr_Chong crouches down low and uses his invisibility art and stealth, scanning the brush to the north.

Bethpage subvocs, ~Pitch, can you come make sure our ninja doesn't kill the children so I can go try to sneak up on whatever that is too?~

Kavanaugh looks around, and edges to the side, out of the way, realizing a good portion of the team's firepower is behind him.

Pitch_Black says, "Go quickly."

Saburo says, "I can't see him..."

Bethpage nods to Pitch and goes.

Saburo says, "Pitch is the one who... "

Dr_Chong subvocalizes, ~It is up in the trees.~

Saburo shrugs and lets it drop. He continues scanning the woods beyond the horse.

Pitch_Black reaches up and touches the stud at the temple of his shades, cycling his visor through infrared and thermographic, squinting into the distance for dispersed light or heat. "I'll take the heat for it when she comes back, Saburo. Eyes up for now."

Saburo frowns, and his eyes widen. ~It's probably an elf, Doctor. Be wary!~

Kavanaugh says, "Enough!" his voice is quiet and reasonably professional. "Keep it down...." He looks up into the trees, eyes narrowing. ~Is it moving?~ he subvocs.

Saburo says quietly to Pitch. "I'm looking.. I don't see anything."

Pitch_Black says, "If this turns out to be a sugar glider, I'm going to be so pissed off... Page, report."

Dr_Chong subvocalizes, ~Seems to have stopped, can hear it breathing.~

Saburo says ~Can you sneak up on it and take it down alive, Doctor?~

Saburo says, "Whatever it is, it must know we're looking..."

Dr_Chong subvocalizes, ~I do not know if I can climb trees well enough.~

Pitch_Black says, "Stand by, Doctor, wait for Page to report in. Page, you still breathing?"

Pitch_Black mutters bitterly, "I know she can climb a tree, let me just tell you..."

Saburo puts his SCK back in it's holster on his backpack, and draws his Baretta. He takes the silencer out of it's pouch, and quietly attaches it, before plugging the lead from the pistol into his weapon link.

Bethpage subvocs, ~Mmhmm,~ hoping not to be loud enough for the stranger in the tree to detect...

Pitch_Black says, "What's your twenty? Don't keep us in suspense here."

Bethpage subvocs, ~Beautiful woman in tree, apparently unarmed, wearing a skirt and apron. Doesn't seem to see me. Shall I try to catch her to chat with?~

Pitch_Black says, "An... apron."

Pitch_Black winces and shakes his head. "I have no idea what to say to that, Page. See if she feels like talking."

Bethpage subvocs, ~Yeah. Elf with lotsa pockets.~

Saburo says, ~If she's an elf, take her down and capture her.~

Kavanaugh blinks. An elf... with lots of pockets... and an apron. What, is she some sort of Masonic auxiliary elf?

Dr_Chong watches the horse for any further reaction to the woman's presence.

Pitch_Black says, "Go ahead and bring her down, Page. I'm going to move up to back you. Father, cover my approach please."

Saburo smiles. "Just what we need. Excellent." He activates his comm, and suggests ~If you can knock her off the branch, Doctor Chong can capture her.~

Bethpage subvocs, ~You remember I don't speak the language, right? Maybe Doc should say something friendly, see if she answers-- pretend he's not sure where she is. I can always try to jump her if it gets us nowhere-- and it'll distract her from any noise I make on my climb.~

Pitch_Black says, "Yeah. Doc, stay close to me, please?"

The horse, apparently tired of waiting for this woman snorts and buries it's head back into a bush, munching away happily on the leaves.

Bethpage subvocs, ~Start talking, Doc.~

Pitch_Black approaches very slowly, hoping that his approach is sufficiently distracting... while not being so distracting that it attracts an arrow to his forehead.

Dr_Chong nods and says ::Hello:: in Dowrani.

Dr_Chong watches and listens in the direction of the women in the trees.

Saburo scans the rest of the base peremiter, before climbing into the SUV and sitting down beside the elven boys. He quietly pulls the door closed behind him.

Dr_Chong says in Dowrani, ::Mean no harm::

Pitch_Black subvocalizes, "Take her out of the tree if things get squirrelly, Page; I can help you do this nonlethally."

Saburo reports, ~Everything is clear on the rest of the perimiter. If she has friends, they're some distance away.~

The woman, who only Page can see at the moment, sucks in a breath and holds it, listening carefully, her head cocked slightly in the direction of Chong's voice.

Dr_Chong says in Dowrani, ::Please, come down::

Dr_Chong repeats in Dowrani, ::Mean no harm::

Bethpage subvocs, ~Tell me how you plan to help now, Pitch, before I'm flying through the air.~

The woman shifts her position slightly, causing the leaves to rustle. She pushes a bit of folliage aside, probably to get a look at whoever is speaking to her. She gasps, startled.

Saburo watches out the window of the SUV. The elven boys are still admiring the horse.

Dr_Chong holds up open hands in gesture of peace and repeats, ::Mean no harm::

Pitch_Black replies, "Bring her out of the tree; if we have to fight, we want her on equal footing. I'll go high, you go low; we'll immobilize her."

The woman frowns, though it's more in curiousity than anything. She actually swings down and jumps out of the tree, landing in full view of anyone who happens to be looking.

Pitch_Black blinks. "Uh, advance the timetable a bit, Page."

Saburo blinks, and says, "Well, the Doctor must have said something enticing..." He turns his attention to the dowrani boys, to gaugue their reaction.

The Dowrani boys actually look startled. The older one even looks over his shoulder at Saburo, confused.

Dr_Chong says in Dowrani, ::Do you understand?::

The woman nods, ::Yes::

Bethpage subvocs, ~Pitch, I'm already climbing a tree. I was going to bear-hug her-- fuck. Ok, I'll come down and take low if need be, sure. Want her immobile now, or just if she attacks?~

Saburo shrugs, and just points out the window. "Who is she?" he asks.

Dr_Chong says in Dowrani, ::Who are you?::

Pitch_Black says, "Come down, Page, and circle. Keep it on the down-low... don't spook her, just keep it cool for now."

Pitch_Black says, "If she attacks, then we'll get all Ang Lee in here."

Saburo says on the comms, ~The boys are confused. I don't think they know her... Is she Dowrani?~

The woman says, "Amalas."

Dr_Chong subvocalizes, ~She speaks Dowrani.~

Kavanaugh subvocs quietly, ~Don't the Dowrani and the 'good' elves speak the same language?~

Bethpage comes down and quietly circles the woman on the ground, staying behind and slightly to the side of her.

Pitch_Black says, "Weirder by the minute. Just remember to go for the legs, Page, I'll get the hands. We'll let the Doctor handle it for now."

Saburo nods. "Okay boys, let's go..." He opens the door and climbs out. He points his pistol at them and gestures for them to come with him."

Dr_Chong says ::I am Chong::

Bethpage subvocs cheerily, ~Legs are mine, aye.~

The boys follow Saburo out of the van.

Saburo says, ~When we questioned Miiryn, Renthal spoke a different language to her than he did with the Antyrii. He was translating for some of them.~

The woman manages a smile. ::What are you?:: Even with Chong's limited vocabulary, he's quite sure that she said 'what' and not 'who'.

Dr_Chong says, ::Why you here?::

Pitch_Black says, "Frankly, I'm tired of having to interrogate children. My karmic debt's high enough already."

Dr_Chong says, ::I am human::

The woman motions at the forest and says, ::I *something you don't understand* trees. What is 'human'?::

Saburo reaches down with his free hand to take the younger boys arm. He gestures with his gun again, to give the older brother the message. "Let's go.." He starts walking towards the others, keeping his attention focussed on the prisoners, in case the older one tries to run, or tries to attack him.

Dr_Chong says, ::Humans live this world::

The woman frowns. ::If 'humans' live here, why do we not hear of them?::

Dr_Chong subvocalizes, ~I cannot follow all of it, but she does not seem to know what a human is. She is doing something with the trees. Perhaps whatever it is relates to their unusual growth.~

Bethpage subvocs, ~Speaking of children, Pitch, you still keeping that eye on ours?~

Dr_Chong says, ::Humans here all murdered::

Pitch_Black glances over his shoulder, muttering, "You're gonna kill me, Page, but it looks like Saburo's dragging them over here."

Saburo says, ~No, I am... We're coming your way. What's going on?~

Dr_Chong says, ::Humans live across seas::

Kavanaugh nods slowly; he doesn't quite relax, but he starts to not be as tense.

Amalas, as she called herself, presuming that wasn't just a word that Doctor Chong didn't understand, frowns even more deeply. ::Sorry,:: she says simply.

Pitch_Black says, "Ask her what she is, Doc."

Dr_Chong says, ::What are you?::

Amalas smiles. ::I'm a Dowrani tree-maker.:: 'Tree-Maker' is the literal translation that Doctor Chong gets from that, but it's probably not exactly right.

Dr_Chong subs, ~She says she is a Dowrani tree-maker.~

Pitch_Black says, "That makes about as much sense as anything else has today."

Bethpage subvocs grimly, ~Dammit Pitch. At least they stayed alive when you left them with him.~

Pitch_Black turns to look over his shoulder at the boys, to see how they react to Amalas.

Saburo walks slowly towards the edge of the woods, his hand firmly holding the younger boys arm. He doesnt' drag the kid, but lets him set the pace, and keeps his eyes firmly on the older brother.

The boys are just watching curiously. They don't seem to know her.

Dr_Chong says, ::Where you from?::

Amalas motions north-east, ::My home is that way::

Dr_Chong says, ::How far?::

Saburo approaches, and pauses as they pass the horse, to let the children get a closer look at it.

Amalas seems to think about this question. ::Half day maybe?::

Dr_Chong subs, ~She says her home is a half day to the north east.~

Pitch_Black says, "Here's a thought, why don't we trade her the kids for safe passage over her forest."

The two boys momentarily forget their fear of Saburo as they walk past the horse, gazing at it in awe. Not like kids who have never seen a horse, but like kids who love horses.

Bethpage subvocs, ~Pitch, I am SO with you on that.~

Pitch_Black says, "I'm just looking to offload them in a way that doesn't involve digging shallow graves."

Saburo smiles. ~That's right where you and I estimated it would be. We should ascertain if that is the warlord's camp first, however. This woman hasn't been hostile yet, has she?~

Pitch_Black says, "Not yet, Saburo... she's smiling like she hasn't got a central nervous system. It's a little creepy."

Dr_Chong says, ::Live near Warlord?::

Saburo says, "I thought we were going to trade them for the prisoners the enemy took."

Amalas looks at Chong. ::Home not safe to Humans right now. *something you don't understand* say we are under attack by vermin. Maybe you stay away from vermin, don't get sick.::

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~Maybe she speeks Dowrani because that's the only language we can talk to her with.~

Dr_Chong relates that over the comms.

Pitch_Black says, "That answer your question, father?"

Saburo purses his lips. "Well.. it seems their leaders don't keep the general populace informed. Should we correct her, Doctor, and tell her that her warlords make people sick?~

Dr_Chong says, ::Dowrani bring vermin here?::

Pitch_Black says, "Let's not antagonize her yet."

Saburo gathers the boys again, and gestures for them to move on. He leads them to the others, so they can get a look at the other elf. He stops walking when he sees her. He just stares, and gasps, a strange look on his normally cold and efficient face.

Amalas shakes her head. ::No. Vermin from here. Alamsech says we need to get rid of vermin or they make us ill. So, I Tree-Make and look out for vermin.::

Dr_Chong says, ::What vermin look like?::

Saburo even lowers his gun from the younger boys side.

Pitch_Black turns over his shoulder at the sound. He looks at Saburo, then back at Amalas; "Oh shit," he murmurs.

Kavanaugh subvocs, ~I think it does answer my question, Pitch, I-- uh... what's wrong, Pitch?~

Saburo murmurs something in Japanese.

Amalas shrugs, ::Don't know. I look for little crawly things. Maybe they vermin that Alamsech talk of?::

Dr_Chong subs, ~She says the vermin was here already and they are trying to get rid of it so that they will not get sick. She says she "tree-makes" and watches for vermin.~

Pitch_Black nods to Kavanaugh and inclines his head toward Saburo, silently.

Dr_Chong subs, ~She does not seem to know anything about what the virus is, if that is what she refers to.~

Pitch_Black says, "Let's not illuminate her, Doc. At least we know we're on Alamsech's trail."

Dr_Chong says, ::You make trees grow fast?::

Amalas looks around at the other people in the group. Her eyes pass over Saburo, but linger for longer on Pitch Black, Kavanaugh and Bethpage. ::You 'human'. What they?::

Dr_Chong says, ::They human also::

Kavanaugh blinks to Pitch, then looks to Saburo, and blinks again. He makes a wry looking face, a visual equivalent of "Oy gevalt."

Amalas smiles and nods proudly. ::I help trees grow strong, fast.::

Dr_Chong mutters in english, "Mostly anyway."

Saburo smiles slowly, his gaze fixed on Amalas. It's a rather silly grin.

Dr_Chong says, ::North east, half day, that where Alamsech is?::

Saburo quickly hides his pistol toting hand behind his back.

Pitch_Black resists the urge to answer, Ghost. Not that she would understand anyway, he reminds himself, and now is hardly the time to be getting maudlin. "Page, circle back and corral the kids, please? I'll keep an eye on the gardner."

Bethpage answers, ~On my way. She saw me anyway.~ She suits action to words and comes back to ride kidherd.

Saburo shakes his head slowly, trying to get his mind back on the job.

Both of the kids look relieved to see Bethpage coming over.

Amalas nods, ::Alamsech at home.::

Bethpage gives the kids a genuine smile, and tries a reassuring wink across species barriers as she approaches. It doesn't slip her mind that at least right now, Saburo's not much of a threat.

Dr_Chong subs, ~Alemsch seems to be located in the same place she is from, it must be their main base.~

Saburo doesn't protest Bethpage's attempt to take the kids from him. He just lets the younger one go, and lets her take them. He no longer seems concerned that she'll do something stupid like let them go free....

Dr_Chong says, ::Know boys?:: and points to the two children.

Amalas looks at the boys thoughtfully. ::Maybe they Nimari's. Don't know.::

Dr_Chong subs, ~She said they may be Nimari's boys, she is not sure~

Kavanaugh says, "Who's Nimari?"

Saburo says, "What is her name, Chong?"

Dr_Chong says, ::Who Nimari?::

Pitch_Black says, "Amala, she said."

The kids don't seem to react to Page's wink, but they do come and stand with her, one on each side.

Dr_Chong subs, ~Amalas~

Amalas says, ::Nimari is Sword-Leader.::

Saburo says, "Amalas... she's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, Doctor..."

Dr_Chong subs, ~Nimari is Sword-Leader~

Dr_Chong subs, ~Uh, quite. But she is a dangerous alien with unknown intentions.~

Bethpage's brows lift. ~We have a Sword-Leader's kids (maybe)?That could be good!~

Dr_Chong subs, ~Anything else you want to ask, and what do we do with the three of them now?~

Saburo says, "Are you sure? She doesn't seem like the others to me."

Pitch_Black says, "Just remember that their use as a bargaining chip depends entirely on the threat of doing them harm, Page."

Dr_Chong subs, ~Ask the Father, the devil comes in beguiling forms.~

Kavanaugh casts a glance at Saburo for a moment, then looks back to Amalas. "Sword-Leader. Is he Dowrani?"

Dr_Chong says, ::Nimari Sword Leader a Dowrani?::

Bethpage says, "Does it, Pitch Black? Maybe Nimari'd be impressed enough by their safe return that she'd listen to us saying we don't want a goddamn war. "

Amalas nods ::All Sword-Leaders Dowrani.::

Pitch_Black says, "Wouldn't get my hopes up. We're vermin, remember."

Dr_Chong subs, ~All sword-leaders Dowrani, she says.~

Bethpage says, "Maybe a Sword Leader on our side could turn that tide. This chica doesn't think we're vermin."

Pitch_Black says, "She doesn't know yet."

Pitch_Black says, "But we'll try it your way... I think I've had enough killing."

Kavanaugh grimaces. ~Either way, we're definitely in Dowrani territory now.... Uh... maybe ask her if she's Dowrani? Or maybe we have a third group of elves to deal with now...

Saburo's eyes narrow, just slightly. "Doctor, are you saying the only reason she's smiling at us so prettily is because she doesn't know who we are?"

Dr_Chong subs, ~She does not seem to have any idea.~

Saburo nods, and remembers finally to start using his communicator again. ~A war is exactly what we're in though, whether we want it or not. Doctor, does she know anything about the Antyrii prisoners, or Renthal?~

Bethpage nods solemnly to Pitch, then subvocs to the group, ~Call me crazy, but why are we sure she'd hate us if she did? Maybe some of them are capable of making their own judgements instead of blindly doing what they're told by Alamsech... not that I think we should risk it, sadly.~

Dr_Chong says, ::How many sword-leaders at home to north east?::

Amalas says ::Six. They protect us from vermin.::

Dr_Chong says, ::You know Renthal?::

Pitch_Black says, "We've got to get rid of these kids somehow. Tactically they're a drag, and if you want to go the humanitarian route we'd only be dragging them into more battles."

Dr_Chong subs, ~Six sword-leaders to protect them from Vermin she says.~

Pitch_Black says, "It seems like as good a gamble as any right now."

Amalas' expression darkens. ::Renthal *something you don't understand, but sounds like a curse*. He to be put to death.::

Dr_Chong says, ::Seen renthal lately?::

Saburo turns his gaze away from the elven woman finally. He's remembered why he's here. ~Does she know Kandre?~

Amalas shakes her head. ::Not seen. Heard Alamsech captured, though.::

Dr_Chong says, ::Where Alamsech keep prisoners?::

Amalas shrugs. ::Not for Tree-Maker to know.::

Dr_Chong says, ::You know Kandre?::

Amalas nods ::She is Sword-Leader.::

Dr_Chong subs, ~She says Renthal was captured and is to be put to death. She does not know where they are kept however.~

Dr_Chong subs, ~Kandre is a sword-leader~

Kavanaugh blinks. "That's not good."

Saburo frowns. "We need to either rescue him and the Antyrii by force.. or get a trade going. If he's to be executed... they may not give him up. I'm still holding out hope that one of their females may wish to bargain for three of their children, however. As unlikely as that is."

Bethpage bites her lip. ~When's the execution? Does she know that?~

Dr_Chong says, ::You know when Renthal to die?::

Amalas shrugs again. ::Maybe soon.::

Dr_Chong subs, ~Maybe soon.~

Saburo says, "Maybe we should bring her with us..."

Dr_Chong subs, ~To what end?~

Pitch_Black says, "Why don't we send her to the sword-leaders with a message, instead. It'll be safer than trying to just ride into their village."

Saburo just shrugs.

Pitch_Black says, "Safer for her, too. The less contact she has with us the better."

Saburo says, "Maybe.. then we'd have to tell her the truth."

Pitch_Black says, "She hasn't yet equated 'human' with 'vermin'. They'll probably correct her when she gets to the village, but for now..."

Bethpage subvocs, ~We're already dragging too many prisoners. I say we leave her the kids and split-- second thought, yeah. Message. Definitely. But I also think we need to keep going, time's shorter than an elf-kid.~

Saburo says on the comms, ~We should split into two groups for the rescue anyway. One team to secure the hostages, and one to assault them with the warbird.~

Bethpage says, ~I'll be a groundling. And we do need to move, guys. You heard the lady-- the killing's soon, and as far as we know they have Gene too.~

Saburo nods. ~They'll likely start the festivities after nightfall. Which is a perfect time for us to attack.~

Pitch_Black says, "Then we're for giving her the children and going on our way?"

Saburo says, "What kind of message did you want to send them, Pitch?"

Saburo says, "If we give her the children now, we can't bargain with them later.. Are we through negotiating?"

Pitch_Black says, "There's no point in sending a message if we intend to blast their village. I suggest we attempt the trade; then if that fails, then we burn the place down."

Amalas looks up at the sky, then back at Chong. ::I have to go home now, or it will be dark before I get there. Was nice to meet you.. C.. Chong.:: She has a little trouble with the name.

Dr_Chong says, ::Wait please Amalas::

Kavanaugh thinks for a moment, then nods, "I'm for it. Let's hand the kids over to her, or rather ask if she can take the kids."

Bethpage subvocs firmly, ~Yes, Pitch Black. You're the diplomat-- you select the message.~

Dr_Chong subs, ~She says she must leave soon to be home before dark, what now?~

Saburo says, "Why not have her lead the ground team and hostages there?"

Amalas blinks and nods ::Okay. I wait. Must go soon, though.::

Pitch_Black says, "Doctor, ask her please to tell her Sword-Leaders that the humans would like to trade these children for the Antyrii."

Pitch_Black says, "And Renthal."

Dr_Chong says, ::Humans want trade children for Antyrii prisoners and Renthal::, points to the two boys.

Saburo says, "Maybe she should speak to Kandre instead of Alemsech or Ansrellion. The mother might be more willing to trade, if she's told that we also have her daughter."

Pitch_Black says, "Yes. Tell the mother first."

Bethpage says, ~And suddenly, we become vermin in another pair of eyes. Lovely week it's been.~

Amalas frowns at Chong. She looks like she's suddenly realised that you're not just taking these kids home to their mother. ::Why?::

Saburo smiles at Amalas.

Dr_Chong says, ::You take message to Kandre?::

Pitch_Black says, "Tell her because we want to see them safely home, just like we want to see the Antyrii safely home."

Saburo says, "And Miiryn too... "

Dr_Chong says, ::We want stop death between Dowrani and Humans, make all safe::

Bethpage says, ~Oh, nicely done!~

Pitch_Black says, "That's right. No more killing, if we can help it."

Amalas looks really confused now. ::But, Dowrani fight vermin, not human.::

Dr_Chong says, ::Human want stop fight between all, Antyrii, Dowrani, Vermin, Humans::

Pitch_Black says, "Tell her please, Doctor, that's exactly how it should be."

Amalas takes half a step back from Chong when he says Antyrii. Her voice is on the edge of anguish when she speaks, ::Antyrii hurt us, always. Why you help them?::

Dr_Chong says, ::Dowrani trade lives, make trust, talk with humans, make peace::

Dr_Chong says, ::Humans want stop all hurt::

Pitch_Black curses silently. This isn't working.

Bethpage rests a brief hand lightly on each child's shoulder, gently. I am so sorry... for the very small good that's worth.

Amalas shakes her head firmly. ::No! We let Antyrii go, they come back and hurt us more!::

Saburo steps closer. "She doesn't look happy, Doctor..."

Pitch_Black frowns. "Let it go, Doctor. Tell her to just take the children and go."

Dr_Chong subs, ~Suggestions?~

Bethpage subvocs, ~Don't shoot her if she runs. It won't help us.~

Dr_Chong looks to the others for agreement.

Pitch_Black says, "Just let them go. She's not going to understand. We're going to destroy the place anyway... it hardly matters now."

Kavanaugh sighs softly, and nods to Pitch. "I'm afraid I have to agree. Just... let it go. Perhaps our karma will then be in our favor, if nothing else."

Pitch_Black says, "Page. Let 'em go. Doctor, just ask her to take the kids and go quickly."

Dr_Chong says, ::Amalas take children, return home safe, show humans want peace, no more hurt or death::

Saburo looks at Pitch, then smiles grimly and nods. "I hope she's not there when we start shooting and burning..."

Bethpage says, ~Suggest that humans could stop Antyrii.~ She quickly releases the children and says in her own language, "I really hope you make it out of the fight zone, kids. Take care."

Dr_Chong says, ::Humans try to stop Dowrani and Antyrii causing hurt::

Bethpage reaches to touch the kids' shoulders lightly again, as she's seen caring parents do in movies.

Amalas calls the children over. She pulls out a little pair of scissors that she probably uses to work with the trees and clips the cuffcord. She grabs one of their hands in each of her and starts to walk away. Apparently she's not going to take the horse?

Dr_Chong says, ::Amalas, horse?::

Dr_Chong gestures toward the horse.

Amalas looks over her shoulder and shakes her head. ::That not my horse. Alamsech's.::

Dr_Chong says, ::Why horse here?::

Pitch_Black reaches for his gun, reflexively. I shouldn't be surprised. I really shouldn't.

Amalas says. ::Alamsech watch you. Say 'You talk, I listen'. He want to know more about you.::

Kavanaugh frowns, his hand returning to his SMG.

Dr_Chong relates that and adds, ~We may have blown it.~

Pitch_Black says, "Go on, Doctor... tell him we want to stop the fighting."

Saburo tenses when Chong tells them what she said. He whirls around, his pistol snapping up. He searches the trees above. "Show yourself, Watcher."

Bethpage sighs and says, "I told you the horse was spying on us. I just didn't think I' was right."

Dr_Chong says to the horse, ::We want stop fighting:: and watches for a reaction

A male Dowrani, easily six and a half feet tall steps out from next to a tree. He must have been invisible for you to have missed him. You all recognise him. This is the man that showed up at the end of the battle. He looks at Amalas, ::Take the children and go. Your assistance is no longer necessary.:: He spreads his hands to show that he is unarmed. No sword on his hip, no bow on his back.

Saburo says, "You."

Bethpage subvocs, ~The Watchers speak English, too. Fuck.~

Bethpage blinks. "Him..."

Dr_Chong says, ::What you want?::

Kavanaugh gives a quiet sigh. ~Blast....~

Pitch_Black says, "Howdy."

Alamsech folds his hands and says in perfect English, "That was quite a significant show of faith. Our society values it's children very highly."

Saburo takes a few steps closer to Alemsech. He's seen how dangerous and treacherous this elf is.

Pitch_Black says, "We're just sick of having to interrogate children. I'm sick of this whole continent, frankly."

Saburo says, "Ansrellion doesn't care about your children. Are you more willing to bargain than he was, Watcher?"

Pitch_Black says, "Saburo, shut it."

Pitch_Black says, "We'll deal with treachery if and when it happens. We're trying to prove that we're not the barbarian hordes, remember."

Kavanaugh remains quiet, letting his hand move away from the SMG. At least this Dowrani isn't hurling invectives at them.

Alamsech says, "Now. I believe it is time for a show of faith of our own."

Saburo says, "You forget he's the one that brought the treachery to the table last time, Pitch. He makes one move that looks like he's casting magic...."

Saburo shakes his silenced Baretta.

Pitch_Black says, "You're assuming a lot. Keep it in your pants, Saburo."

Bethpage says, "Let Pitch talk, Saburo."

Pitch_Black says, "Go on, Alamsech. Let's hear it."

Kavanaugh blinks, and looks over to Alamsech.

Alamsech looks at Saburo, "If I was going to kill you, San, I would have done so already. I am here to negotiate."

Pitch_Black says, "Let's all keep this professional, gentlemen."

Pitch_Black says, "Go on."

Kavanaugh says, "Suits me fine."

Bethpage waits quietly, hoping reason prevails.

Pitch_Black is trying hard to keep the irritation out of his voice. A pissing match is the last thing he feels like stomping out now.

Saburo's left hand, with the gun, is hanging loose at his side. His eyes are on Alamsech, watching him closely.

Alamsech says. "I don't have them here with me right now, but I will be returning your allies, with the exception of one of the Antyrii. We are keeping her in return for Miiryn."

Kavanaugh blinks. "Well, now. That's a lot more generous than we expected."

Bethpage smiles faintly, despite it all. At least the kids are safe. Dare we hope our hostages fare the same..?

Alamsech's eyes flick over to Bethpage. "Even Renthal."

Pitch_Black says, "We're willing to exchange her as well. We're not interested in fighting a war of extermination."

Saburo raises an eyebrow at Pitch's lie, but doesn't say anything. With luck, Alamsech won't notice.

Pitch_Black says, "It's pretty obvious that either side has the capacity for wiping each other off the planet. We've all come a long way to throw our lives away."

Bethpage says, ~Don't TELL him that, Kav-- what the fuck? Even the BAD guys are giving me shit about-- fuck it.~

Alamsech nods. "I believed that you would return her, but understand that just as you do not trust us, we cannot trust you, so the Antyrii woman will be returned when you or the Antyrii bring Miiryn to us."

Pitch_Black says, "I expect nothing less."

Pitch_Black says, "When can we expect the Antyrii?"

Alamsech looks over his shoulder. "They should be here any moment now."

Kavanaugh winces at something. and gives a sheepish nod to Page.

Pitch_Black says, "We'll wait."

Saburo says, "And after the hostages are exchanged, what then?"

Bethpage says, "Excuse me, but... if you believed we would return a child safely, Alamsech, why have you been murdering our people?"

Alamsech smiles, a touch of sadness on his face. "Sani, the humans have been murdering us for time immemorial."

Pitch_Black doesn't say anything. This, is my surprised face.

Bethpage mutters subvocally, ~And why is an elf I've met once on a battlefield giving me funny looks about an elf I am NOT having a Thing with?~

Pitch_Black says, "So that's it? We're just going to keep on going until we're both gone?"

Kavanaugh blinks, then considers his next words. "Alamsech... we have no record of you or your people in our history. At all. Knowing that, then hearing you say that humans have been killing you forever, is... confusing. Can you explain more?"

Bethpage pays attention, her body language more respectful than hostile. She badly wants these answers, and if others ask the right questions, there's no reason not to just listen and hope for reason.

Alamsech shakes his head. "We wish to end this here. The first time your kind tested one of these -- "atom bombs" I believe you call them? -- they killed all but 100 of us. Instantly. We have returned in kind and forged a new homeland, because they destroyed ours. We want it to end here. Now. We wish to be left in peace."

Alamsech looks at Kavanaugh. "Have you no knowledge of your kind's own fairy tales? The Sidhe? The Tuatha de Dannan? The monsters under your child's bed? These stories are all about us."

Saburo says, "You could just be saying that. What assurance do we have that you won't just use your viral weapon again as soon as we leave the island?"

Alamsech looks at Saburo. "I will hand the Witch-Queen over to you. She is the only one with the power to cast it. You may kill her."

Pitch_Black blinks.

Saburo nods. "That would be an acceptable solution to me, perhaps."

Bethpage chokes. "Is this a sacrifice for the greater good that she's willing to make?"

Kavanaugh stifles his immediate reaction to express confusion. "We do. We have those stories. But nothing in our history, nothing beyond fairy tales. I can accept that your people are what the Irish call the sidhe, the fey, but... there's been no historical record of your people on our world...." He lets his voice trail off when he makes his offer.

Alamsech looks at Bethpage. "It is a sacrifice that I am willing to make for the common good."

Pitch_Black says, "Alamsech, we'll do the hostage transfer. After that... we need to talk this over among ourselves. Alright? If we can stop the fighting, we want to."

Pitch_Black subvocalizes, "We need to determine whether or not this fulfills our contract... and whether or not it's an agreement we're willing to commit to."

Bethpage nods, still feeling stunned, to Pitch's request.

Alamsech nods. "Your allies are over there, by your vehicles." He points behind you. "With this I leave you. You may contact me through the stone."

Pitch_Black says, "We'll be in touch, Alamsech, once we have this worked out."

Alamsech stops, suddenly. "You did figure out how to use it, right?"

Bethpage turns to look behind her, unable to stop.

Saburo says, "No. They wouldn't let the Doctor experiment with it. "

Sure enough, standing near the vehicles are Rethal and four of the five scouts.

Pitch_Black says, "Under the circumstances, we were a little worried about eavesdropping. I'm sure you understand."

Dr_Chong looks to Alamsech patiently.

Bethpage says, "We were afraid you'd find us and kill us, to be blunt."

Saburo says, "Where's the cat?"

Alamsech nods. "They are one-way devices. Simply hold it in your palm and whisper across it. The words do not matter."

Kavanaugh blinks, looking to Saburo. "yarnchaser? He's in the jeep. Why?"

Pitch_Black says, "Thank you."

Alamsech looks a little chagrined. "The cat.. escaped us."

Pitch_Black has to smirk. He just-- can't help himself.

Saburo smiles. "Good. I've been worried he was a changeling you sent to replace the real Yarnchaser.

Kavanaugh arches an eyebrow, and tries to stifle a grin. Or tries not to stifle it. It's hard to tell which.

Pitch_Black says, "Don't feel bad, Alamsech. I'm afraid it might actually be a match for all of us."

Alamsech shakes his head. "No. He gave one of the Warlords something to remember him by and took off running."

Bethpage's face twists into a grin.

Kavanaugh nods quietly, and makes a quiet note to give Yarnchaser some of the wet cat food for his next meal.

Pitch_Black grins. "Hey, what can you do? Tell the Warlord to put some ice on it. We'll get in touch with you shortly, Alamsech."

Kavanaugh says, "He gets that way, sometimes. I could show you a few scars he's given me... uh, maybe another time....""

Alamsech swings up onto the horse. "Consider our offer, Sana and Sania. Contact us when you are ready. We await your word."

Pitch_Black nods. "Until then."

Saburo says, "We will consider it carefully, Watcher. If you can keep your leaders in line, we'll do the same with ours."

Saburo says, "The Russians only know what we tell them, afterall. We can get around their orders to exterminate the threat if need be."

Alamsech smirks. "I have Ansrellion on a tight leash. The rest are not a concern." He taps the horse's flank and it canters off into the woods.

Bethpage starts snickering.

Pitch_Black watches the elf go. Finally he nods, "Yeah... I think it's time for us to go home and have a talk with our little Spetzniki."

Pitch_Black says, "Or at least, back to the village."

Kavanaugh lets out a breath, and nods.

Bethpage says, "Tight leash. I'll just bet you do."

Pitch_Black turns back to the group. "Alright, saddle up! Come on, we've got a decision to make."

Saburo says, "We can take the chopper back to the Antyrii village to fetch the girl and see what they think."
