Realms: Oloth: Dramatis Personae

Governor Zarrazz Vrinn (Gala'maDred)

Zarrazz Vrinn was born in a cave near Shadowdale, in the Dalelands of Aber-Toril, in Realmspace. His mother, a Gold Elf priestess of Mystra, was killed shortly after his birth. Sent to the Underdark by his father, he was fostered by the Bowyer of the Merchant Clan Vrinn in Menzoberanzan. Being half drow and half surface elf, the Clan had high hopes of turning the child into a surface-travelling merchant. They arranged to send him to Menzoberanzan's Academy, to study the wizardly arts in Sorciere.

A few years into his apprenticeship, Zarrazz' class was taken to the surface for a "test" where they were left alone for a week and told to survive. His classmates all became ill and weak due to the sunlight, and many would have died if Zarrazz had not found food and water -- his high elven blood afforded him better natural protection against the sunlight. This scared somebody with power at the Academy, and he would have been killed outright if not for his Clan's business ties to a powerful Noble House of the City. Instead, he was transferred into Melee Megthare, the Warrior's School, where he would flounder and die at the hands of his classmates. Indeed, they surely tried. Being a bastard half-breed, the other students in Melee Megthare constantly tormented and attacked Zarrazz. For reasons of sheer survival, Zarrazz devoted all of his time to practicing his fighting skills, and enhancing his physical strength and fitness. He was determined not to let them kill him. To the surprise and shock of the Academy's faculty, Zarrazz survived to graduate, fourth in his class.

Instead of sending him back in glory to his Merchant Clan, he was told to take what meager possessions he had been issued -- armor, a cloak, a buckler, and a short sword -- and lead to a cavern on the edge of the City. Lloth's priestesses told him to leave, and to never set foot in Menzoberanzan again, upon pain of Death, or a fate much worse. Zarrazz spent close to thirty years wandering the wild Underdark, surviving mostly by wits and luck, before he found his way to the surface, in the hills just west of Thay.

Zarrazz traveled west, moving mostly at night and in the woods, going into human towns and villages when his curiosity and needs forced him to. He took a new name, to leave behind his memories of childhood in the Underdark. Gala'maDred, he named himself, after the hero and villain of his favourite childhood tale, in which a Drow wizard played a deadly game with a Dragon of the Deep. He made his living by gambling, earning gold enough to buy food and ale, and spent the next thirty years mostly in a drunken, self pitying stupor, moving on to another village whenever the inevitable happened. In the Underdark, he had been called a bastard surface elf; on the surface, people saw him only as Drow, and things were no different. Sooner or later, someone would take offense to his race, and try to attack him. Instincts trained in the Drow Warrior's Academy and honed in the wild Underdark proved too much a match for the average farmer or mercenary, and Gala'maDred always mercilessly killed those who sought to do him harm. And so he would be forced to flee, to find another town to earn his living at cards and dice. Lynch mobs were not unknown to the young Drow in those days. The Time of Troubles passed Zarrazz by unnoticed -- he never sobered up enough to even remember what town and tavern he was in while the Gods walked Faerun, and chaos reigned across the Realms.

Gala'maDred eventually met another Drow, by the name of Alois, and travelled with him to Waterdeep, the City of Splendours. There he used his pouch of gold to buy an abandoned shop near Piergeron's Palace, and set up a workshop. Disgusted by the lack of skill of human bow makers across the continent, Gala'maDred decided he would have to make his own crossbows and arrows. He joined Waterdeeps Bowyer's Guild, and by day experimented on new designs in his workshops. By night, he followed Alois into the dark and seedy underworld of Waterdeep's primary thieve's guild...

Before long, Dred opened his bowshop to the public, and began to make money hand over fist when it became known among the city's gaurdsmen and mercenaries that his unique arrows could outfly any other non-enchanted missles made on the Swordcoast. Despite his financial success, Gala'maDred was hardly satisfied. He was drawn by lure of excitement, wealth, and glory found nightly by his half-brother Alois and the Knife Edge Assassins. Proving his worth to several prominant masters of the Guild, Gala'maDred was taken in as an apprentice to the Knife Edge, where he learned the finer skills of an assassin, and began his life long journey down the path of service to Vhaeraun, Drow God of Thieves, Assassins, and Males Opposed to the Matriarchy of Lloth.

Many years serving Vhaeraun, both on the surface, and in the underdark, saw Gala'maDred become a wealthy elf, respected as head of a noble family from Waterdeep to the Dalelands, and in Underdark cities such as Ched Nessad and Erryndlyn. Having slain several dragons that thought he would make a tasty elf-snack, Gala'maDred added the title 'Dragonslayer' to his name. He exported the bows and arrows of Dragonflight Bows up and down the Swordcoast, and across the western ocean as far away as the fabled elven isle of Evermeet. He served as Vhaeraun's Chosen Ambassador to the kingdoms of the surface elves, and as one of His Chosen Champions in the war against Lloth -- Matron Mothers from Erryndlyn to Menzoberanzan itself soon learned to fear Vhaeraun's assassins as a real threat to their continued rule.

A century and half of glory, fame, and devoted servitude came to a sudden end when Vhaeraun unexplainedly forsook his Chosen, and Gala'maDred was cast out of the Knife Edge. Separated from his beloved family, by his brother Alois, Dred was forced to spent several years in hiding, before he was able to return to his mansion in the Dalelands and secure a spelljammer he and his brother had stolen years before while doing a service for the Queen of Evermeet. He collected his family, and took them with him into Realmspace, leaving his homeworld of Toril behind.

For centuries Gala'maDred and his immediate family travelled through the Known Spheres, raiding and pirating, and hiring out as freelance assassins, rebuilding the noteriety and wealth that had been stripped away when Dred was cast out of the Knife Edge, and out of his God's favour. Upon discovering the Oloth Sphere, a small sphere settled by Drow, the Vrinn family decided to stay, and settle back down at last. The natives of the Oloth Sphere did not take part in the religious wars that raged back and forth between Drow in the Known Spheres. Gala'maDred saw it as a haven, and a refuge. After establishing his family as a Noble House of Arcana City, and opening another bowshop, Gala'maDred Dragonslayer ran for Governor of the Oloth Sphere. Promising to make both the merchants and pirates of the Oloth Sphere rich beyond their dreams at the expense of the technological nations found beyond the Oloth Rift, and due to a surprising lack of opponents running against him (several dropped out, and one died mysteriously during the election race), Gala'maDred Dragonslayer was elected by the nobles, guilds, and merchant houses of Arcana City to be the new Governor of Oloth. Since then, he has established House Vrinn as the dominant Noble House of Arcana, and so holds both the Governor's Office, and the position of Patron Lord of Arcana City.

Zarrazz Vrinn has served on the FurrySpace Galactic Council, and acted as Oloth's Ambassador to numerous techno-sectors of Furryspace in his time as Oloth's Governor. Removed from office twice by the interference of outside nations, he has always managed to regain his position. After narrowly averting a war with Xeria, and several political clashes with the Captain of the Nighthawk, Oloth's enigmatic Governor has taken a more isolationist policy, and in recent years rarely leaves the Oloth Sphere in any official capacity. He sends others to represent Oloth on the galactic political scene. Zarrazz went back to his homeworld of Toril for a long overdue six year visit, and only recently returned to Oloth. Upon his arrival, he immediately resumed Governorship of the Sphere, from the replacement he appointed before he left. Since he was first elected to the post fifteen years ago, there have been no official announcements or proclomations declaring an intention for another election... If Zarrazz Vrinn still plays on the political stages of Furryspace, he does so from behind the scenes, and in spite of rumors to the contrary, he still claims to be merely a humble bowyer and shopkeeper, living out his old age in the peaceful Haven of Arcana City.
