Goran does the leveling-up dance

ScarGM says, "When last we left our party of intrepid adventurers, they were bickering about how to go down the hole"

ScarGM says, "The hole was one of the 6 exits from the room. Four doors also exist, one being the way the party entered the room. The ceiling holds the 6th exit, that being a small ventilation shaft through which a slight breeze can be felt but no sunshine seen"

ScarGM says, "Scuze me, corridors, not doors"

ScarGM says, "is about 18" in diameter"

Sammuel ties Goran's still burning lantern to Sammuel's rope and begins to lower it down the hole.

Flibsy tries to inch around Sammuel, peering at the box.

Belian moves quietly over to Bret and murmurs, "Are we going to try to work together on disabling this?"

Sammuel says, "Watch the lantern, Flibsy."

Flibsy looks up at Sammuel, and then reconsiders. Lying down at the lip of the hole, she looks down down down, as the lantern slowly lowers.

Sammuel says, "Bret, help me watch if you would, I know my senses are not as keen as yours."

Belian says more loudly to the rest of the party, in a reasonable tone, "There's just no way rappelling down is safe for us. It would be most practical to try to disable the device while most of the group stands back in the corridor we came from, in case the attempt fails."

Sammuel says, "Belian, if you could keep us covered by watching the other exits..."

Bret to Belian, "We could try again."

Sammuel says, "Bret, Belian?"

Belian shrugs to Sammuel, "I'd rather look at the hole, but that needs doing. Certainly." She watches the exits (and the ceiling.

Bret says, "I'll help, Sammuel."

Sammuel says, "Thank you, my friend"

ScarGM says, "Those of you who are looking into the pit see that the ladder continues down the side of the pit, seemingly all the way to the bottom. The lantern doesn't quit touch the bottom, but you can see what looks like the floor and an opening about 55-60' down"

ScarGM says, "looks about like the floor you've been traveling on thus far...dry rock, mostly, with a bit of dust/gravel here and there, but mostly pretty tidy"

Flibsy says, "Looks perfectly safe, Sammuel. I don't see any footprints."

Sammuel says, "Neither do I, but I would like to take a closer look."

Sammuel says, "Belian, do you think you could climb down this rope?"

Flibsy says, "I could go first; I have rope too, and you could pull me up now problem, I'm sure. A man as tall and strong and bulky as you." Flibsy looks wistful. "And then I wouldn't be a dead weight anymore.""

Sammuel says, "Maybe..."

Flibsy grins at Belian. "And if someone let me borrow their crossbow, I could make any goblins go shoo."

ScarGM says, "Goran looks like a strong, well-built human. Flibsy looks pretty durn light."

Belian looks away from guarding to inspect the rope. "Hm. Yes, I think I could. But I'd rather disable the device first, before ANYONE tries it, otherwise we run a foolish risk of setting off that trap with us gathering around it."

Goran grins wide-eyed and sits down near the pit, polishing his mace with a rag.

Belian says, "Going down the rope, we'd still have to be wary of jostling that third rung-- or the box."

Sammuel says, "I dont think we will be in danger as long as we do not touch the ladder rungs. That is why I want to use rope."

Sammuel says, "With Flibsy's rope and mine, we can easily get to the bottom."

Belian says, "Yes, of course we do do want to touch the ladder rungs. I'm talking about what will happen if despite our wishes, we DO anyway, while dangling on a rope with no way to dodge."

Belian says, "**editor: do NOT want to touch =)"

Sammuel says, "If yo"Just be careful"

Bret says, "Or any other triggers we haven't seen yet.""

Flibsy says, "That's why he'd lower me, Bret. So I wouldn't touch anything. We could even rig some kind of pulley so I'm lowered in the centre, couldn't we?"

Sammuel says, "Didnt your near death experience last night teach you to keep from messing with traps, Belian?"

Belian snorts, "How many of us are there? You want to take the chance that each one of us will 'be careful' enough going down AND then coming up again? You're a fool if you'd rather risk that than one or two of us attempting to disarm the danger entirely."

Sammuel says, "I am not fool. "

Belian says, "Flibsy, you dove for the box a moment ago. I'm not so sure that you wouldn't want to touch anything new and nifty that might be down there."

Flibsy looks crestfallen. A very small "Oh." comes out, and she goes to sit in the corridor they arrived in, watching down it intently.

Sammuel says, "What kind of a chance do you think you have to disarm that thing, even with Bret's help? 50/50, maybe?"

Sammuel says, "Do you want to trust your life to those kind of odds?"

Belian nods to Sammuel, "Then perhaps a compromise can be reached. ONE skilled person goes down on the rope to see what there is to be seen. If it merits us all going down.. then Bret and I will try to disarm the trap before anyone else tries the rope."

Sammuel pauses thoughtfully.

Sammuel says, "Hmmm..."

Sammuel says, "I suppose that could be acceptable, but who would go down the rope?"

Belian says, "Bret or myself, preferably. Flibsy is light, but tends to... touch things."

Belian says, "Bret and I have the added advantage of being able to recognize and deal with other traps, as well."

Sammuel says, "Very well. Belian, will you go?"

Belian says, "Yes."

Belian says, "I will... unless Bret thinks he'd have better odds?"

Sammuel says, "Ok. Bret, you and Flibsy keep an eye on the other corridors. Belian, drop all your gear execpt your weapons. Goran you help me hold the ropes."

Goran grins, puts the rag away, hangs his mace back at his belt, and assists.

Sammuel says, " We "

Flibsy watches warily down the corridor.

Belian raises a quiet eyebrow, shrugs, and removes her pack. She is left in travelling clothes, with a dagger at her belt, a crossbow and quarrels on her back, and several darts worn within reach.

Sammuel says, "We can tie Flibsy's and my ropes together to get you to the bottom. Take Goran's lantern to see. Dont go to far, just see what is near the bottom of the hole. If you run into any trouble, yank twice on the rope and we will pull you up"

Bret to Belian, "Well, you're smaller than I am."

Flibsy unties her rope, which is hanging from her backpack. "Here, Sammuel. Take good care fo her."

Sammuel says, "Flibsy, may I have your rope, please?"

Sammuel says, "Thank you."

Belian nods to Bret and sighs. "I'd rather disarm if first, but we'll do that next if we all need to go."

Bret says, "So would I, but we've been overruled."

Sammuel ties his and Flibsy's ropes together, taking his time. He checks and rethe knots again, and again until he is sure they will hold.

Sammuel unties Goran's lantern from the end of the rope and hands it to Belian.

Sammuel says, "Ready?"

Goran grins, "Of COURSE!"

Flibsy waves at Belian. "Good luck."

Belian nods to everyone, says "If this takes me out, Flibs gets the crossbow off my charred remains, divide the rest as you will, there's not much. I'm ready."

Flibsy does a little happy jump, then looks worried. "Don't die, Belian. There are other crossbows."

Belian grins.

Sammuel says, "Remember, yank twice on the rope if you get introuble and hold on tight."

Belian says, "Everyone but the rope-holders please step back, just in case."

Belian nods, "I will," and goes to the rope to begin.

Sammuel says, "Goran, hold on to the rope."

Flibsy goes back to standing in the corridor.

Sammuel begins to lower Belian down with the aid of Goran

Goran grins and holds onto the rope

ScarGM says, "And the two of you lower her without difficulty, and she manages to avoid hitting the third rung"

ScarGM says, "And I'm assuming you decide to go all the way down?"

ScarGM says, "Belian sees no traps"

Belian keeps going down the rope.

ScarGM says, "And Belian is just about to the bottom. You see an extinguished torch below you."

Belian recognizes the thrown torch and nods. She decides to check for traps, then stand on the spot the torch hit if it seems safe.

ScarGM says, "Belian still sees no traps"

Belian steps lightly onto the area around the torch, and holds up her lantern to look around (and check for traps in the area again).

ScarGM says, "Hey, guess what? Something looks trapped"

ScarGM says, "Highly suspicious at least."

ScarGM says, "At the bottom of the ladder, the side of the tunnel facing away from the ladder opens into what appears to be a small antechamber, the floor of which is somwhat cracked and broken. One of the larger chunks seems...different"

Belian gets close as seems safe to the 'different' chunk and examines it for an obvious use and way to disable it.

ScarGM says, "The piece seems like it was fitted, not broken by cataclysmic movement. Its sides appear to be shaped perfectly that the piece might slip down into the floor if it were pressed."

Belian calls up to the party, "Found what looks like another trap. Damn ancient dwarves. Still ok down here, no signs of life."

Belian searches for secret doors.

Sammuel says, "Is it just more tunnels down there?"

Sammuel yells.

Belian calls, "Um, so far. Hang on."

ScarGM says, "The antechamber contains three exits, one is the one you're entering by, one open corridor heading off to the left, one closed to the right"

ScarGM says, "Belian finds no secret doors"

Goran grins to Sammuel. "So what are we going to do about that box?"

Belian looks around the little antechamber for signs what that piece of floor might do if pressed-- any slits or loose bits in the walls or ceiling?

Sammuel says, "Lets not get to hasty, Goran."

ScarGM says, "Nothing you can see."

ScarGM says, "The walls are rough rock, full of cracks, as is the ceiling, but it looks like it could be natural."

Belian calls up to the party, "There's an open corridor heading off to my left, and one closed to the right. That's it so far... if we all come down, NOBODY step in the little alcove near the rope, there's a piece of floor that looks odd in there and I can't tell what it does."

Belian makes a mental note to mess with that later, and goes to look down the open corridor.

Sammuel yells down the hole, "Anything else?

Belian calls back, "Nope."

ScarGM says, "Successfully getting around the pressure plate without tripping it, you see darkness and rock down the open corridor, which bends off to the left and out of sight about 10' down"

Belian checks for traps in the corridor and goes forward if none are found..

ScarGM says, "you find none"

Belian goes forward to see what's left-and-down.

Belian calls back, "Looking down the left one a little."

Sammuel yells "Dont go too far.

Belian calls, "No problem."

ScarGM says, "you notice there is less dust down here, though it still looks undisturbed for a long time."

Belian goes back to inspect the closed door, avoiding the floor-plate on the way.

ScarGM says, "The door appears trapped (with another needle trap near the lock) and locked"

Belian snickers quietly to herself.

Belian calls up to the party, "There's a locked door down here, and the other corridor ends in a rockfall. I'm going to see what I can do with this door."

Belian tries to disable the trap.

ScarGM says, "Belian disables the trap gracefully."

Belian takes a moment to purr.

Sammuel yells"Why dont you come back so we can all go down.

Belian tries to pick the lock.

The lock is picked

Belian calls, "Sure, just a sec."

Belian opens the door.

Belian says, "There may be no need, if there's no way out down here."

ScarGM says, "Behind the door is a dark room, hewn into rough rock. Some small stalagtites hang from the ceiling. There is a stone desk extending from the side of one wall, with a smooth area of black stone embedded into the wall above it. On the opposite side, on the floor, are two chests. At the far end of the room is another door. The room is abou 10' long, 10' wide, and 6' tall"

Belian murmurs to herself. "All /right/..."

Belian calls to the party, "Got the door open. "Let me check for traps, then I'll come back. There's another door, I think we all want to be down here to investigate."

Belian checks the floor for traps as she crosses to the chests.

Sammuel yells " I think you should come back now. I said not to go far.

ScarGM says, "the floor appears untrapped"

Belian goes to the chests and looks at them for traps and lockedness.

Sammuel yells "Belian!"

ScarGM says, "both are locked, one appears trapped."

Belian calls back, "I am, I am... just a sec, wanna make sure it's safe."

Sammuel says, "No. Come back now."

Sammuel says, "Or else I am coming down there to get you."

Sammuel mumbles " I knew I should not have sent her down alone. She's probably getting into trouble.

Belian sighs, "Don't be a fool, I'm coming." She goes back to the rope and says, "Bring me up." She remembers to collect the torch on the way.

Sammuel waits for 2 tugs on the rope.

Belian says, "Yo, Sam, I'm here." She tugs a few times on the rope.

Belian says, "Can I climb on yet? You holding it?"

Sammuel begins to haul up the rope.

Belian grabs and clings to the rope.

Sammuel says, "Try not to swing and bump into the ladder."

Belian mutters, "Yeah, I'll work on it."

ScarGM says, "So the party is reunited"

Sammuel says, "What did you find?"

Belian says "Sorry that took so long," to the party. "I wanted to live."

Bret says, "Keeping alive is worthwhile."

Belian says, "As I said, there are two other exits-- one is the corridor with the rockfall, which smells like sulfur, is kind of singed and I don't recommend going down there, the entrance is trapped--"

Belian says, "--avoid it please, there's a plate that is made to move in the floor--"

Sammuel says, "At the bottom of the rope?"

Flibsy says, "How heavy do you have to be to trigger it?"

Belian says, "--and the door I unlocked has a very interesting room, with two chests, an odd stone desk with some kind of black stone panel in the wall above it, and... another door I did not inspect. "

Belian says, "No, not at the bottom of the rope. You have to walk over to the open corridor. Flibsy, I think /any/thing touching it would set it off... and there'd be no point, that way lies nothing but a blocked corridor. Rockfall."

Flibsy oooohs. "A stone panel?

Sammuel says, "Well, I guess you can try to disarm this trap now, if you want but, I am still against it."

Belian says, "I'd prefer you were against the wall over there instead, Sammuel. It'd be safer."

Belian grins, briefly.

Flibsy says, "What ... exactly ... needs to be done to disarm the trap?"

Sammuel grumbles but, moves away to the cooridor the party entered.

Sammuel says, "Flibsy, come over here with me while they work."

Flibsy smiles at Sammuel. "Come to listen with me?

Belian says, "Well, I want to either make sure those bottles can't break, maybe by padding them or shielding them... or disarm the knife and spring."

Sammuel says, "Sure, Flibsy, let's listen."

Belian says, "It looks like the tiny knife is designed to break the bottles, and all the reasons I can think of for that are bad."

Flibsy stands behind Sammuel, listening very hard down the corridor.

Belian says, "Like, poisonous gas, acid, fireballs..."

Belian says, "What do you think, Bret?"

Flibsy says, "And there's no switch to disarm the trap?"

Belian says, "Any ideas on shielding on padding or... not that I see now, Flibsy, no."

Sammuel seems to be watching Belian and Bret more than he is listening.

Belian says, "There may be a way to get that spring, though, if I try..."

Bret says, "I don't know what those will do, alchemy was never a strong point, but I'm pretty sure we don't want to find out."

Belian says, "In case we fail and it gets on us, somebody please have water ready."

Belian nods to Bret.

Goran is standing a short ways off to the side of th pit, grinning.

Belian says, "What can you tell, Bret?"

Belian says, "I'm going to go ahead and try to remove the bottles. It seems safer than messing with the spring-- once the bottles are gone, we can trigger it and just have a little knife go "whizz." Ok?""

Bret says, "Pulling the wire or removing the tension will cause the knife to break through the bottles." Continues the technical chatter.

Bret says, "Sounds workable."

Belian nods. "Ok. Goran, get BACK with the others."

Goran grins and moves back to where Sammuel and Flibsy are. "This is neat."

Flibsy nods, looking fascinated from where she is standing. Which is behind Sammuel.

ScarGM says, "You successfully remove the first bottle, theone with reddish powder inside it. The second one seems to be stuck. You could try again, bu might break the bottle. "

ScarGM says, "or you might set off the trap"

Flibsy says, "Hey Belian, when you're done, may I have the bottles?"

Belian says, "Not sure that's good idea, Flibsy. I like you too much to hand you something fragile that might melt your skin when it breaks."

Belian carefully hands the bottle to Bret to place out of kicking distance.

Flibsy says, "I would be very careful with it, Belian. I promise!"

Belian says, "I'd vote we throw them at enemies, myself, IF we try to carry them at all."

Goran drops his pack and starts rummaging inside it.

Bret places the bottle safely out of the way.

Sammuel watches with a scowl on his face.

Belian says, "Hmm. Bret, what do you think? Shall we try to get that second bottle? Think it's safer without the catalyst if we fail this one?"

Goran produces two small metal tubes with clasps on the sides. He opens one up, and it is empty. "I brought these, figured they might be useful for keepign things in."

Belian says, "It seems kinda stuck."

Belian grins up at Goran. "Hey, keen! Feel free, if that's a good seal on those things."

Flibsy ooohs, looking admiringly at Goran. "What's in the other one?

Bret nods.

Goran opens the second one, smiling. In it is nothing.

Belian hesitates, looking at Bret. "Yea or nay on the bottle, or the spring?"

Belian says, "I'm pretty divided here."

Goran says, "But do we need to use both? Those little bottles should fit in just one case, and then we could keep other things in the other one!"

Flibsy nods at Goran, and tugs on his arm. "When we make camp again, may I look at the bottle?

Belian says, "Uh... Goran, you're /not/ suggesting mixing the contents, are you? Like the TRAP is designed to do?"

Goran grins and looks at Belian with an inquisitive look on his face.

Goran says, "Uhm, okay, we can use both, I guess. Seems wasteful to me"

Flibsy tugs harder on Goran's arms. "Cus this nice old man, see, showed me how to tell powders apart, see, and maybe the powder isn't dangerous as long as it's kept separated.

Goran looks to Flibsy, "Neat, though I'm not sure I understand."

Belian says, "If we keep the stuff, it'll be in separate containers, Goran. Or I'm throwing them down our backtrail to see what they do when they break, so none of us get hurt."

Sammuel says, "Lets talk about this later Flibsy. Right now you should be quiet."

Belian tries to disable the spring, with Bret's advice assisting...

ScarGM says, "The spring is jammed, the bottle falls free from the box suddenly. You may attempt to catch it with a dex check"

Flibsy curls up behind Sammuel.

Sammuel says, "Damn."

ScarGM says, "Belian caught the bottle before it fell into the tunnel"

Belian eyes the bottle in her hand, and sighs shakily.

Bret releases the breath he didn't realize he was holding.

Belian says, "Ok! You can come back now, guys. We did it!"

ScarGM says, "The party now possesses two fragile bottles, one with green powder, one with red powder"

Flibsy races for the bottle with the red powder.

Goran has the one with red powder. Belian has the green one

Flibsy ohs. "I thought Bret had, for now, just put it down on the ground.

Belian grins like a maniac and offers the bottle to Goran. "Here, if Flibsy has paper we can make a funnel and not risk spilling any in the transfer. TWO pieces of paper we can throw away, that is."

Flibsy says, "Can't we just leave the powder in the bottles? They have caps, don't they?"

Goran takes the green-powder bottle and puts it into the second tube, then stuffs both of them back into his pack...then changes his mind, pulls them out, and says "Who wants to carry these?" grinning.

Sammuel slowly rejoins the group.

Belian says, "No way, Flibsy. They're MADE to break, and when they break, something bad will happen."

ScarGM says, "The bottles are indeed well-sealed with wax-covered cork"

Sammuel says, "Not me."

Belian says, "Bret, you want to carry those? Or shall I?"

Flibsy says, "I'll carry them Goran. I will!"

Goran gets an idea.

Bret says, "I'll carry them if you want."

Goran says, "Hey, how about I carry one, and someone else carries the other?

Flibsy jumps up and down, tugging on Goran's sleeve. "Goraaaaaaaaaaan ...

Belian says, "That's a good idea, Goran."

Flibsy says, "Can I have the red powder? Please please please?""

Goran looks down to Flibsy. "You want to carry the other? Okay." Goran hands her the tube with the red powder in it.

Sammuel says, "What abvout the ladder, is it safe now?"

Belian says, "Flibsy, do you have a deathwish?"

Flibsy whoohoos, and carefully rearranges her pack to make room for it. "And if you like, you can carry my rope, Goran. It's awfully bulky."

Belian sighs and says, "Just PLEASE don't open it to run tests til we make camp, ok, Flibsy?"

Goran grins and says, "Well, okay. One can never have too much rope."

Flibsy turns to look at Belian. "No, I don't. It's like I was explaining to Sammuel until he told me to be quiet that when I was younger a nice old man showed me how to recognize powders and I've never had interesting powders since and I might learn something now, don't you see?"

Flibsy takes a deep breath. "And I promise to open up only one of the bottles at a time, and I'll even use my own parchment to make two funnels like you suggested and I will be really really careful. Promise!

Sammuel says, "Belian, the ladder?"

Belian looks seriously at Flibsy. "Learning is great. Trying to wash acid off your skin is not. Just be careful, is all, and do it when we're not moving-- like when we stop for the night. That's all I'm asking."

Belian says, "Er, the ladder? What about it, sorry?"

Flibsy nodnodnodnods. "I promises!"

ScarGM says, "NOTE: These bottles are about 1.5" in diameter, 3" long, very plain and very thin, well-sealed at the open end with a cork completely embedded in the bottle, then capped in wax."

Sammuel says, "Is it safe?"

Belian says, "I'd still avoid the third rung from the top on general principles, but the bottles are gone and the spring for the knife is jammed, so /probably/ if somebody hits it anyway nothing really awful will happen to them."

Belian smiles cheerfully, picks up her pack, and says "I'll go first."

Bret says, "You said there were chests down there didn't you?""

Belian says, "Oh. Ok."

Sammuel says, "When you get to the bottom, wait and show everyone else this trapped plate you were talking about."

Belian says, "Yes, two, Bret. One I'm sure is trapped-- didn't see anything on the other."

Belian says, "Sure, Sam."

Belian goes to the ladder with her stuff and climbs.

Sammuel climbs down the ladder avoiding the 3rd rung

Flibsy watches anxiously as she waits for everyone else to climb down.

Belian points out the trapped floorplate to the first person down, and tells them to inform the others.

Goran, who thought he was taking up the rear, but apparently Flibsy snuck around behind him to go last, hears her slipping, and manages to reach out, grab her, catch her, and not fall off himself.

Flibsy looks up at Goran, hero worship in her eyes. "Th-th-thanks. I think ... my pack overbalanced me a little.

Sammuel looking up and seeing what happened, offers to carry Flibsy's pack.

Flibsy nods down at Sammuel and very very gingerly takes her backpack off. "Thank you Sammuel. It's not big, or heavy ...

Goran climbs back up, will take the rear this time after lowering Flibsy's pack down on rope.

Goran says, "I can lower you down too, Flibsy, if you like."

Flibsy oooohs at Goran. "Would you? Or at least, I could climb down with a safety rope, so that I don't fall ...

Goran says, "Ummm, lets try that, since my knots aren't always that good."

Flibsy nods, and begins tying the rope around her waist, before setting off again.

Goran belays Flibsy from above, grinning merrily.

Sammuel continues down the ladder

Flibsy slows down near the bottom, looking for Belian's pressure plate.

Belian points out the odd-lookin plate on the floor. It will be difficult to enter the room without steppin on it...

Belian moves across the room by the chests after she steps over the plate.

Flibsy dances into the room. "Thank you, Sammuel, for carrying my pack. And Thank you, Goran, for catching me. And Thank you, Belian, for pointing out the plate. And isn't today a beautiful day?"

Goran stumbles as he attempts to tip-toe around the plate. he tries to catch himself but stumblesback right onto it. Suddenly...

ScarGM says, "The room is filled with light. The room beyond is filled with light. The corridor beyond is filled with light."

Flibsy ooooohs, standing and looking around with open mouth.

Belian hits the floor, covering her head... looks up when nothing else happens... and starts laughing really, really hard.

Flibsy dances around, hugging herself, and hugging Belian, and hugging Sammuel. "Shall I carry my pack again now?"

Belian sits on the floor, laughing like it hurts but she can't stop.

Flibsy would like to continue.

Flibsy hugs Belian again. "Why are you laughing like this? Won't people hear us?"

ScarGM returns with an eggroll, a coke, and two ice cream sammiches

ScarGM says, "small antechamber, rough rock, has large pressure plate, two doors out, one goes to a corridor that seems to be caved in, bit of sulfur smell and some signs of singing in there, other one has a stone desk, two chests on the floor, door at opposite end and an odd dark rock embedded in the wall"

ScarGM says, "and that room is 10'x10'x6'high"

Belian giggles at Flibsy and doesn't resist or stiffen at the hug. "Because Goran showed me the light."

Belian laughs helplessly.

Flibsy looks at Belian, and then giggles. "Yeah. He showed us all the light. So what happens if I push on the stone in the wall?"

Belian says, "Oh, that? That one drives spikes through the walls and kills us all."

ScarGM says, "Upon entering the room witht he chests, you'll note that the stone in the wall is no longer black all over. It appears to now have a bunch of lines on it, with some writing here and there at intersections and ends of the lines."

Flibsy reaches out to touch the writings, lightly tracing over them.

ScarGM says, "Nothing happens when Flibsy touches them"

Flibsy reads out the words as she traces over them ...

Flibsy calls out. "Belian? I found something even better than a chest. Want to come see?

Belian gets up from the floor, holding her sides, and goes over to Flibsy. "Can you read it?"

Flibsy says, "I think so, Belian. See? Here it designates different parts of the mines ..."

ScarGM says, "Bret, you figure out that the writings are designations of things, not actually a text meant to be read in sequence."

Belian peers. "If you say so. I dunno dwarvish. Does it show us the way out, or places where they mined gems or gold?"

Belian says, "Or even where the traps are?"

Flibsy points at one designation. "Well, this is a new goldvein ... and there's a transit line here ... I wonder where we are. We came down a long corridor ..."

Flibsy points at a small room near the left hand side, and pulls out her parchment. "See, Belian? Here is where we came in. The corridors match exactly. And we came down here ... and we're in the Overseer's room. Belian, what's an Overseer?

Belian says to Flibsy, "A transit line? They had horses and carriages down here?"

Flibsy looks blank. "I ... I odn't know. Maybe they needed a way to carry the gold. But why didn't they just ... oh. Never mind.

Belian says, "Um, an overseer is like a person who stands around and tells people what the do and makes sure they're doing it right, while other people do all the work."

Flibsy ahs.

Flibsy says, "And look, here, if we follow this passage ... we can reach all the way to the other side of the stone panel!"

Belian giggles. "If only we /could/ just climb in and climb out."

Flibsy shakes her head. "I pushed and I pushed and nothing happened.

Flibsy says, "Or we could try following this .. transit ... line. But where was the tunnel we heard the goblins in? I can't find it here, Belian ...""

Belian sighs, "I can

Belian sighs, "I can't read it at all. Maybe it was dug after the map was made-- made the goblins made it and not the dwarves."

ScarGM says, "The other lines more or less appear to radiate outward from the center of the map in a huge spiderweb-like pattern"

Flibsy says, "What do you think, though? Should we try going around the outside first?"

Sammuel says, "Around the outside?"

Flibsy points at the panel. "I found a map, Sammuel. "We're here, in Overseer Room 17. And the transit line goes all around the outside of the map ....

Sammuel says, "What about the chests?"

Sammuel says, "Are they trapped, Belian?"

Belian says, "Well, that depends... if we start finding good stuff in here, great, we could use the map to travel all around and get gems, gold, ancient stuff... but we need food, Flibsy. I think we need to know we can get out before we try to do much of anything else."

Flibsy looks at the map again, tracing out the other corridor ...

Belian says, "One is, Sammuel. he other one looked ok-- let me go check again."

Belian goes to the chests.

ScarGM says, "The untrapped chest still appears untrapped, Belian."

Belian calls, "Bret, this one looks untrapped to me. I'm gonna try to disable the trapped one since I'm having a good day."

Bret will carefully open the untrapped roll keeping an eye out for any interior traps.

Sammuel looks over Bret's shoulder.

ScarGM says, "The lock pops open"

Belian hmms. "Guys, I have no idea what this one did, but I think it's disabled... you might want to stand back though."

Belian tries to pick her lock.

ScarGM says, "The lock pops open"

Belian says, "I'm going to open this now."

ScarGM says, "it is close to, not against the wall, looks really light and flimsy. The other one is same distance from wall, looks stronger and heavier."

Sammuel moves out of Belian's way.

ScarGM says, "no problem. it ends up being a *lot* heavier than it looked, as though it were full of heavy metal, but you can manage to scoot it along the floor"

Belian says, "Guys? I have a feeling that these chests might be linked and do something together. Nobody stand in front of mine while I open it."

Belian tries to open hers from behind.

Sammuel moves against the wall the chests were against.

ScarGM says, "The chest opens and..."

ScarGM says, "is full of nails."

ScarGM says, "Iron nails, about 3" long each."

Belian says, "Hmm."

Belian says, "I wonder if this was the trap."

Sammuel has a bad feeling about this...

Belian stays where she is.

Belian says, "Gonna open that other one?"

Bret says, "Maybe they use spikes for mining?"

Sammuel says, "I will open the other one. Flibsy, get behind Goran."

Flibsy inspects the panel again, to see if she can spot any new changes.

Goran says, "Why would they put a lock and a trap to guard nails? There hasn't even been any wood yet, except for a few chairs. What need have dwarves to keep their nails safe?"

Belian says, "Maybe they were supposed to impale the opener."

Belian says, "Was there an iron shortage?"

Goran says, "How?"

Bret says, "Is there anything under the nails?"

Sammuel says, "I am opening the other chest."

Belian says, "Illusions don't last years, do they?"

Belian says, "I don't want to touch the nails til the other one is opened."

Belian says, "Just in case I missed something..."

ScarGM says, "Sammuel opens the other chest, and..."

Sammuel opens the other chest.

ScarGM says, "inside the larger, stronger chest are some VERY nice looking quivers filled with very nice looking arrows, and a gold-and-gem-encrusted shortbow, along with a pair of nice-looking axes with some more of the dwarvish-looking characters engraved on them."

Sammuel eyes get very wide.

Belian says, "Ooooo!"

Flibsy oooohs ... looking at the shortbow!

Bret says, "Don't touch anything yet. Let's have a look at what's in this chest with the nails."

Belian goes to help move nails.

Bret says, "The nails look like they go all the way down?"

ScarGM says, "the chest is heavy enough to be completely filled with metal"

Belian starts carefully scooping out nails and putting them on the floor.

ScarGM says, "and Belian notices before getting too far in that there appear to be two more bottles, a bit thicker this time, and a similar spring-trap, at the bottom of the box of nails."

Belian says, "Yii! STOP, Bret! Don't touch!"

Belian says, "There's another trap in here under the nails."

Sammuel says, "I knew it!"

Belian gives Sammuel an odd look.

ScarGM says, "The springtrap at the bottom appears to be linked to the trigger you have already disabled, and is nowhere nearly as intricate or sensitive as the one you disabled earlier. Pulling the bottles out should be fairly simple, provided you're gentle enough."

Belian shrugs and tries it, very carefully.

ScarGM says, "The first bottle (the green one) breaks open against some nails as you try to pull it out. Green acid starts pouring everywhere."

ScarGM says, "...and nothing seems to happen...""

Belian yawnks her hand back!

Belian yanks her hand back, too.

Flibsy says, "Belian! Wait. Let me take a look!"

Flibsy runs forward, leaving her backpack behind, and comes to a halt a foot away from the chest.

ScarGM says, "Belian gets some on her hands"

Belian sighs. "Flibsy, here's some green powder if you want some--" she hisses!

ScarGM says, "Note: nothin seems to happen, and Belian, you feel nothing. and yeah, on a 19. its hard not to get any on you when you're reaching into it"

Belian says, "Goran! I got it on my hands."

Flibsy looks at the green powder carefully. "Don't rub your hands together ...

Belian says, "Sure, Flibsy."

Flibsy holds out her hand. "May I have one of your hands, please?"

Belian holds it out glumy, before her head snaps around. "You ARE going to give it back, right?"

Goran gets out a waterskin and prepares it for pouring on Belian when needed.

Holding Belian's hand, Flibsy first very very gently waves some fumes over with her other hand, so she can smell them, before delicately dipping one finger in the powder, and tasting it.

Bret says, "Oh dear."

Belian stares at Flibsy, aghast.

Belian says, "You didn't."

Belian watches the little woman intently for signs of reaction to the stuff.

Flibsy looks up. "It's only a tiny taste. Not even a swallow. Without a lab, how else will I recognize it?"

Belian says, "Flibsy, if that were a really good poison, you could DIE, that's how. It doesn't TAKE much."

Flibsy spits. "Gah. Tastes horrible! But if you mix it with sulfur and salt peter you get a wonderful big smoky bang. Alone, like this, it's inert. Just rinse it off, and you'll be fine."

ScarGM says, "Nothing has happened, still. There's green powder all over, but that's it."

Belian sighs, irritable and shaky. "THIS time, it was ok. Could you not put it in your mouth next time, please?"

Bret says, "Please?"

Belian says, "Can I dust it on my pants? I hate to waste our water."

Flibsy digs her toe into the unforgicing floor. "But how else am I supposed to recognize it? Now we know the bottles will be perfectly safe as long as Goran carries one, and someone else the other. And ... ummm ... I would rinse. Just in case you break the other bottle next.

Belian grins. "Ok, but I'm not sticking my hand in there for the other bottle. Just in case I break the other bottle next."

Sammuel wonders how much the jeweled weapons would be worth.

Belian rinses her hands, sparingly as she can.

Sammuel says, "Lets just close the chest with the nails and push it off to the side."

Belian says, "There's green powder all over the inside of that chest. I'm not reaching in again; if the other bottle does break, BOOM."

Flibsy looks into the chest, tsk tsking over the spilled powder.

Goran says, "The green powder won't eat through the seal on the other bottle, will it?

Flibsy shakes her head. "Nope. Inert. Like a hibernating bear; won't harm anyone.

Belian says, "Just don't wake up the bear."

Sammuel puts down both of his superflous broadswords
