Bret says, "Hello."

ScarGM says, "Alright. When last we left our illustrious party of adventurers..."

ScarGM says, "...they were in a room apparently labeled as "Overseer Room 17" in a mine. A panel with lines and bits of dwarven writing on it is embedded in the wall, and two chests lie on the floor, one filled with nails and a 2-part explosive device, the other filled with weapons, some of dwarven make"

Flibsy picks up the shortbow, marveling at the gems, and looks at Belian. "Say, want to trade?

Belian blinks at Flibsy. "For what?"

Flibsy looks longingly at the light crossbow.

Flibsy caresses the shortbow. "See? Isn't she pretty? I think you should call her . Coruscina ... for the way she sparkles.

Belian blinks again and laughs. "Oh! I can use a shortbow, actually. Hm. That would give us two good ranged weapons, wouldn't it? Darts and stones aren't as useful... Sure, if nobody else wants the bow, I'll do that."

Sammuel offers to carry the axes, unless someone else would rather wield them

Belian takes off her crowwbow, finds the quarrels, and looks at the party for dissent before handing the stuff over to Flibsy and taking the shortbow and arrows.

ScarGM says, "...and there are two quivers of arrows in the chest"

ScarGM says, "usually 20"

Flibsy caresses the light crossbow lovingly. "You will be my ... my ... Sentry Maker."

Belian chuckles at Flibsy. "Corruscina? Are you sure it's a girl?"

Flibsy nods at Belian. "How many boys would bedeck themselves so prettily? George might, but other than that ...

Goran looks at Flibsy. "Who's George?"

Belian looks a little bemused. "Who the hell is George?"

Flibsy shrugs at Belian. "Some Boy I met ...

Belian strokes the sparkly shortbow. "She is lovely. I hope she works half as well as she looks."

The bow shimmers in the, uh, lamplight

Flibsy looks over at Bret. "What name does your bow carry?"

Belian raises an eyebrow. "You meet boys at your age?"

Flibsy points at Bret. "He's a boy, isn't he? And we met ... just last week."

Bret says, "Name, Flibsy?"

Flibsy nods eagerly. "Every bow should have a name. Makes them feel ... cherished. Loved. Important. Sentry Maker is gonna send a lot of sentries to their Makers.

Belian grins behind her hand and watches to see how the serious Bret takes being called a boy.

Belian says, "Oh, and I thought you were making it your sentry. Silly me."

Goran says, "I don't think my mace wants a name"

Flibsy looks back to Belian and points at Sammuel, next. "He's a boy too. With a face like that, he can't be a girl like you ..."

Flibsy tilts her head sideways, looking intently at Goran.

Bret shrugs off the nomenclature.

Belian tilts her bow to watch it sparkle, seeing if it'll catch the light again and shimmer.. that was pretty...

Sammuel says, "So shall we see what's behind that door?"

Belian says, "Flibsy? Can you copy down that map onto paper for us?"

Flibsy puts her pack down on the floor and begins to rummage through it. After dropping a flint, and a small mirror, and two daggers, and a handful of marbles, and a pouch, she finds the inkpot and her mapcase. Unscrewing it, she reveals a virgin piece of parchment.

Belian says, "Or if our paper's not big enough, maybe somebody could spare a shirt--" ...she sees the parchment... "--oh, good."

Flibsy says, "Excellent idea, Belian. I want to make a nice proper map. That would make splendid trade goods."

Belian looks aghast. "Trade goods? I bet nobody else has a copy of this map. We ought to keep it and come back to explore when we can, get all the stuff we can find."

Belian says, "We can trade what we find and come back to see if there's more later.. but if we trade away our map of the source, well..."

Flibsy nods ... "But we could always make copies. We should, in any case."

Belian nods. "Definitely copies. Soon. We might get separated, after all."

Flibsy says, "This is going to take a while though. This map is hard to copy. I'm not too hungry, but perhaps you could eat? Or wash off the rest of the powder?""

Belian says, "We ought to have a rendezvous point, once there is more than one map, in case we do get split up... sure, Flibsy."

Belian wanders off to the corner and looks at the shortbow intently.

Bret for some bizarre reason is still intently looking at this 'panel' that he'd thought at first was an inset plaque.

Flibsy nudges Bret. "I think ... I think this map is more than just a pretty picture. But let's finish copying it down before we experiment ...

Bret says, "I think so too...But magic was never really my forte.""

Flibsy copies steadily, finally holding the parchment up. "What do you think, Bret? Good enough? I left some of the smaller side passages off, because the map got too crowded.

Flibsy holds up the parchment, and points to the map. "See, here is the Overseer's room, where we are, and here are the other markings ...

Flibsy reads each of the markings out loud in dwarvish, and then translates.

ScarGM says, "suddenly..."

ScarGM says, "...as Flibsy reads out the dwarvish characters on the map, the map disappears and is replaced by an image of..."

ScarGM says, "...five figures looking back at you from a lit room about five feet into the wall..."

ScarGM says, "...they look amazingly like yourselves..."

Flibsy oooohs, waving and nudging Bret.

Belian looks up and stares, startled. "It reflects?"

Bret says, "Okay...This is strange."

Flibsy oooohs. "Lemme try out this other room? It says ... lemme see? Ah, yes, Supplies?

Belian waves at the image experimentally.

The image of Belian waves back simultaneously

Belian says, "Hey, it's not a mirror. Look."

Sammuel says, "Hey, look at that..." and points to a small flashing set of characters at the bottom left of the panel

Belian says, "Look at what? Oh, what is that, Sammuel? Flibsy? Can you read it?"

Flibsy notices the flashing characters, which are far more obvious on the darker screen, and tries to puzzle them out.

Belian stares. "Oooo."

Flibsy hmmmms, and tries saying other things in dwarvish. Like "Inventory" and "Location" and "Alarm System" and "Traps"

ScarGM says, "nothing happens for those four words"

Flibsy hmmmmms. "Lights?

ScarGM says, "nothing"

Flibsy touching the flashing characters.

ScarGM says, "nothing happens"

Belian says hesitantly, "Flibsy? Have you asked it about gemstones?"

Flibsy tries saying "Map."

ScarGM says, "the map you saw earlier returns"

Flibsy ooohs, now trying Transportation Line, pointing it out and reciting it in Dwarfish first, and then in Common.

Flibsy chuckles.

ScarGM says, "The panel then shows many images, dividing the viewing area into six sections. four of the six show darkness. Two show light, one of them showing activity, a wheel embedded partly in the floor is turning very rapidly and a chain attached to it is snaking out and away off the display"

Flibsy peers at the two lit up sections.

ScarGM says, "MAP appears at the bottom left, as usual, and there is a number in the bottom left of each subsection, 1-6"

Flibsy calls out "6" in dwarvish.

ScarGM says, "6, being one of the dark ones, fills the whole display then. "

ScarGM says, "3 and 4"

Flibsy calls out 3.

ScarGM says, "The lit image of 3 fills the whole screen. Nothing is moving. The light goes out, but the image is still displayed, just dark."

Flibsy calls out "Transportation Line" again.

ScarGM says, "The six sections reappear"

ScarGM says, "only one is lit, and the activity in it has ceased. THe wheel is no longer turning, and the chain is only swaying slightly"

Flibsy looks downfallen and kicks the ground. "The wheel stopped, Belian. Wanna see it up close though?

Belian says, "How do you mean, up close? As in, 'go there?'"

Flibsy shakes her head, and carolling out a cheerful 4 in dwarfish. "Just look at the screen ..."

Belian peers at the screen.

ScarGM says, "The image of 4 expands to fill the display. You can see clearly now that there is a large, purposeful-looking hole in the floor near the wheel, and tracks run parallel to the chain and the wheel, running down the hole and away off the screen. A cart is attached to the chain and is resting on the tracks. The cart is empty. The lights go out."

Flibsy calls out "Lights"

ScarGM says, "nothing happens"

Flibsy pouts. "Everytime I look at something, the lights go out.

Belian says darkly, eyeing the screen, "Maybe it knows you're looking and wants its privacy."

Flibsy points at the panel. "Anyways, Bret, I think I have it figured out now. Want to take another look at the Map? Just say (insert dwarfish word for map here).

Bret says, "One would get that impression, almost as if there were an intelligence behind it."

Belian attempts to say 'map' in dwarvish, quietly.

ScarGM says, "The map appears"

Flibsy says, "But the chain was moving! I saw it!"

Flibsy says, "Wanna try Flammer's Hall next?"

Belian says, "Is it close? We still need to open this other door and check that there isn't another rockfall."

Belian says, "Bret, you want to try this door, or shall I?"

Bret says, "Door? Oh right, let's have a look at that door.""

Belian says politely, "Beauty before age," and winks at Bret, stepping aside.

Belian says, "It's all yours, if you like."

Belian nudges Flibsy. "Did you try asking the map for places with gold and gems?"

Flibsy hmmmms, and calls out "New Gold Vein" in dwarfish.

ScarGM says, "the panel fills with Goblins"

Bret checks for traps.

Belian gasps.

Belian says, "Damn..."

Flibsy watches the goblins intently, trying to make out what they're saying ...

ScarGM says, "a larger figure stands among them. He does not appear to be a goblin, though he looks like a relative species. He appears to be giving them orders"

ScarGM says, "Bret finds that the door is trapped with a needle trap, similar to the previous ones"

ScarGM says, "however..."

Flibsy hmmms, ignoring Bret behind her, and tries "Flammer's Hall".

Belian looks harder at the non-goblin overseer.

ScarGM says, "the needle trap appears to only be effective to persons on the other side of the door"

ScarGM says, "An image of a large room fills the display. There is a table, many benches, and a large chair at one end. All appear to have been vandalized. Bits of food lie on the table, some on the floor. There are a number of Goblins at the table, some fighting with eachother, some appear to be playing. Some goblins are eating food on the floor. Another of the large-looking humanoids sits at the end of the table in the large chair."

Bret says, "Yes."

Belian sighs. "I dunno what that big guy is, and that bothers me."

Bret says, "Big guy where?"

Belian says, "In the not-mirror on the wall. THe goblins appear to have some other, bigger species overseeing them."

Flibsy points at the other goblins. "There's a whole clan of them here ...

Bret goes over and looks at the panel, "That's a whole lot of goblins."

Belian says, "Y'know, one of those nail-explosion traps we ran across would take out a lot of people. I wonder if we could use that..."

Flibsy nods at Belian. "We've got two bottles, one of each ...

ScarGM says, "The goblins in the display continue their activities. Two of the fighting ones start rolling around on the table with a dagger, kicking and biting. The big one at the end of the table stands up and appears to be yelling at them, walks over and picks them up, one in each hand, by their throats."

Belian says, "I mean /with/ the nails, Flibsy. If we could re-arm a trap, maybe..."

ScarGM says, "The goblin with the dagger drops it and both goblins start scrambling to get free from the grip on their throats"

Flibsy nods at Belian. "We've got nails too. Loads of them. Perhaps you could rig a trap in the other chest?

ScarGM says, "The large fellow is still yelling at the goblins."

ScarGM says, "The one who dropped the dagger goes airborne to the left, the other goes airborne to the right. The large fellow sits back down, looking grumpy"

Flibsy keeps looking at the screen, and then comparing notes with her copied map. "I wonder if ... maybe we can bypass them?"

Belian says, "PLEASE, Flibsy! I'd much rather avoid them, myself."

Belian says, "Take as long as you need!"

Belian adds wistfully, "Though if we could pick up any gems or gold for later, it would definitely be a bonus."

Flibsy pores over the parchment, her fingers tracing out a possible set of routes ...

Belian stops playing with the shortbow and dons the quivers of arrows and bow so they're in reach to use when needed.

Flibsy traces the rabbit hole we all climbed down. "Going back up there won't help. They'll either lead us back outside, straight to Flammer's Hall, or to rock faces. And if the goblins are still mining I don't want to meet a rock face.

Bret says, "I guess I'll just open this door and Sammuel and Goran can have a peak in...""

ScarGM says, "The door opens easily. beyond is darkness and dust."

Flibsy says, "Before we go, could we try looking at these other listed rooms? Like ... Ventilation Shaft (in dwarfish)?"

ScarGM says, "the display shows a large chamber without a floor. Light breaks the darkness dimly. side corridors break out of the walls of the chamber at very steep angles."

Flibsy hmmmms.

ScarGM says, "Okay. Everyone but Belian sees that there is dust moving in this chamber. What's odd is that the dust is blowing upward, slowly."

Belian afks a sec.

Flibsy nudges Belian. "Hey look; the dust is moving!

Flibsy waves at Bret, too.

Flibsy peers intently at the moving dust.

Bret says, "Yeah, dust...What's blowing it upwards?"

Flibsy watches the screen a few more moments, and then checks the map again (calling out Map in dwarfish in the process), checking for any changes.

ScarGM says, "the map appears, nothing has changed"

Flibsy will start copying out her map while she waits for Bret and Belian to lead her out of here ...

Flibsy resumes copying the map.

Flibsy finishes the second map and shyly gives it to Belian. "See? I drew a little heart around the Overseer's room.

Belian says, "Flibsy, you're the navigator. Can we get to an unused transit line?"

Belian giggles, and pats Flibsy's shoulder. "Thank you. So you did. It's lovely."

Flibsy shakes her head. "Not directly. But if we cut across here, shimmy down through here, and run across this large room ...

Goran pipes up. "Uh...does it look like there's a way out on the other side of the mine?

Belian nods.. "Very well done, Flibsy. Oh, a large room-- maybe more stuff to pick up."

Belian blinks and nods to Goran. "That is sort of a good question..."

Flibsy looks down at the map ... "The only clear exit is a bit south, close to where we came in. But the Transit Line goes all the way around, see, so maybe if we work our way to the far side ...

Goran nods...

Belian says, "That sounds good to me. Shall we? Lead on, noble Flibsy."

Flibsy says, "But we need to keep our eyes open for water; my waterskin is awfully empty."

Belian nods.. "Did you ask the map?"

Flibsy ooohs, whirling around and shouting "Water" at the map in dwarfish.

ScarGM says, "The map does nothing"

ScarGM says, "You see a spot on the map a ways eastward from your present location called "Potsdam's Lake""

Flibsy ooohs, calling out Potsdam's Lake.

ScarGM says, "nothing happens"

Belian says, "Excellent! We should go there first..."

Belian says, "How far is it?"

Flibsy nods. "Right. To the lake it is! Bret, will you walk in front checking for ... " Fibsy swings around again, and yells "Traps" at the map.

ScarGM says, "nothing happens"

Flibsy nods, and mutters Potsdam Lake in dwarfish.

Belian shoulders her stuff. "I'm ready. Bret and I ought to walk abreast together, I think. It worked well last time. Bret?"

Bret says, "Okay."

Belian waits for the rest of the party to be ready.

Belian drifts toward the door that Bret opened.

Flibsy says, "And Bret, be careful. The wall isn't showing the lake."

ScarGM says, "The passageway beyond the door slopes downward gently, which is fortunate as the flooring is very smooth stone and the dust on it acts almost like grease."

Belian searches for traps.

ScarGM says, "The passage remains quite straight, winding only slightly when going around hard rocks in the walls"

Bret is also on the look out for traps.

ScarGM says, "Belian finds no traps. Bret, go ahead and roll"

ScarGM says, "Bret finds no traps."

ScarGM says, "The passageway comes to a fork. The map, you recall, says the lake is to the left"

Belian continues to check for traps as often as is appropriate.

ScarGM says, "roll at the fork, then"

Flibsy consults the map. "Left, Bret."

ScarGM says, "you find no traps"

ScarGM says, "what was that 2nd roll for, Bret?"

ScarGM says, "As you turn left, you notice the air feeling slightly more moist and smelling slightly of mold."

ScarGM says, "The passage to the left is almost completely unfinished, twisting roughly around corners until opening into a large area open on one side. It appears as though the large area's floor drops away suddenly to a huge floor with great stalagmites spiking out of it. Everyone make a spot check"

Flibsy says, "Max of ... 4+n ranks, where n is your current level, if memory serves."

Flibsy smells forward, and pushes forward, dropping her backpack at Bret's feet.

Belian hesitantly inches toward the nearest protrusion to touch it...

Flibsy moves forward, too.

Flibsy sticks her finger in the water. "Oooh, it's nice and cold, Bret."

Belian realizes what's up when her hand meets water before she expected to touch anything at all... she beams. "Nifty!"

Belian looks around for the light source.

ScarGM says, "The surface of the lake ripples to your touches. Off to your right, you hear two small splashes, and a high-pitched clicking noise"

ScarGM says, "Everyone but belian notices..."

ScarGM says, "...a small sleek lizard-looking creature, pale as can be with big, black eyes, standing on its rear legs..."

Flibsy waves cheerfully at the lizard, standing as tall as she can beside the kneeling Bret.

Belian notices Flibsy's arm moving and turns to look. "Hm, Flibsy?"

Flibsy waves both hands, open handed.

The lizard continues clicking and advancing

Belian stands her ground and says to Flibsy, "Try dwarvish, quick!"

Flibsy grins and calls out a ringing hello in dwarfish. And then, for good measure, in a lilting tongue ...

Sammuel readies his chain and starts it spinning, moving to the front of the party facing the lizard

The lizard makes no response, continues clicking

Bret throws the dowel he's still holding in the lizard's direction to see if that'll distract it.

ScarGM says, "Bret, you miss, and the lizard's "horns" pop up on its head rather than being folded back as they were, and its tail shoots up in the air. It clicks more loudly, and you see sparks arcing over the surface of its body"

Bret mumbles a startled oath.

Belian mutters, "Hey, Flibs, want a pet?"

Flibsy oooohs. "Please?

ScarGM says, "The lizard darts forward to 5 feet away of the party. When it hits 10 feet, you can all feel your scalps and armhairs tingling with electricity. At 5 feet away, it clicks loudly, and its body flares with energy that discharges towards you."

ScarGM says, "The energy discharges in Sammuel's direction, and he takes the full force of it. He grunts loudly, but does not fall. You can all feel the static in the air in the aftermath of the blast"

Belian says, "Ok, I think it's hostile."

Bret says, "I'd say so. Ideas?""

Belian says, "Um, attack?"

Flibsy pulls out Sentry Maker, and shoots. "No one hurts Sammy and makes his ahir go funny!

ScarGM says, "The lizard is wounded"

Goran yells mightily and charges the lizard, swinging and missing.

ScarGM says, "Everyone rolling above 12 sees a second lizard swimming underwater towards the rear of the party."

Belian turns to shoot at the second lizard with her shortbow and new arrows.

Sammuel growls and slams his chain into the lizard, not-so-neatly cleaving it in two.

ScarGM says, "The lizard is injured. Flibsy?"

Flibsy moves to stand between and behind Belian and Bret, and recocks her Sentry Maker. "No Lizards' gonne fry my friends!"

ScarGM says, "Flibsy nails the water. Goran's up..."

Goran moves to the water's edge, ready to crush the lizard when it appears.

The water lights up as the lizard discharges electricity towards the party, but it dissipates into the rocks at your feet.

Belian shoots again.
