Background

"Jamie" Shiao-Chang never played by the rules. Born to a Chinese mother and British father, he spent his youth hopping between London and Hong Kong. Rebelling from his father's push to enter the diplomatic service and follow in his footsteps, he fell in with a fast crowd, spending the nights clubbing and gambling and playing in a bar band. Excited by the shady allure of the streets, he ended up under the wing of a minor Triad boss, running minor errands, and being trained as a hit man. He didn't have much problem taking on small Triad hits against other mobsters . they were vicious thugs threatening his friend, right? Until the day his boss Wang Chien sent him after a grocer who had fallen behind on his "protection" money. Shiao-Chang went down to the little Korean grocery, and stood there for an hour, just watching the older man meticulously inspect fruit. It was at that moment that the scales fell from his eyes, and he realized what path he had started down. He tossed away his gun and walked away.

The Triads have a long memory, and after an attempt on his life coming home from a night club, he realized that "just say no" wasn't working. He started carrying again, resumed his training and found a dojo to keep his mind sharp. After an attempt on his father, he realized he needed some allies. Using some of his Dad's contacts, he was soon recruited by British intelligence. The glamour and secrecy appealed to him at first, as did the thrill of working against the vicious Chinese criminal gangs. Over the next six or seven years, he managed to start up a small but successful music label (Morning Star) business in downtown Hong Kong while providing the government with information about some of the most vicious thugs around, and keeping his neighborhood clean. These days, he spends more time hobnobbing with hot young artists and DJ's, but the cutthroat entertainment business keeps him close to the seamy side of life.

He's a friendly, energetic and talkative guy, deeply involved with the arts, particularly music. The past few years (as he's approached 30) has seen sea-change in his habits. He's stopped smoking (mostly), drinks rarely, and has focused the reckless energy of his youth on his current projects and hobbies, which include learning old-style dances, collecting old records, branching out into digital media, and romancing the attractive and elusive customs agent, Fong Mei, who works in the building across from his office downtown.
