Part Seventeen: Bait-and-Switch

Scarlet Chimera, Wintermaiden Docks
Boros, moon of Adarra, Mishka Quadrant

Solbiort strides into the Chimera with her flitter-wing slung over her shoulder. It's still very, very early in the morning. She folds and stows it, noting with approval the full cargo bay, then heads for the Bridge, stripping off her flying gloves and goggles as she goes. She nods to whomever's on watch, sliding into the Pilot's chair, and rumbles, "Time to leave. Far Thunder knows ve're here." She starts the flight process, letting the port tower know they're leaving as she goes through the checklist and starts the engines. Anyone who wasn't on watch to hear that -- which is to say, anyone who wasn't Molly -- is made aware of the fact when the engines start to spin up.

A short while later the Scarlet Chimera is leaping skywards. Solbiort sits back with a tired sigh, then murmurs to Molly, "Tell others as they vake ve must talk in Commons. Also, go make some coffee, ya? Have had very long night." She leans her head back against the chair, musing aloud, "Think ve have some... two, three hours before ve are in black... got to stay avake that long at least. Try not to explode coffee, ya?"

Nigel hits the com and asks in a bleary and grouchy tone, "Want to let me know next time before you start the ship, captain?"

Solbiort rumbles tiredly, "Sure, di-di. Hopefully von't be next time I have long chat vith Far Thunder guy first, though. Oh, also, Molly is making coffee in Commons. Ve need to talk."

Elgyn appears in the doorway, then. "Is something wrong?" he asks immediately. He's carrying way too many weapons for someone who didn't even finish dressing, his hair wet from the shower.

Solbiort chuckles quietly at Elgyn's entrance, "Not if ve get safely to black, di-di Elgyn. Be a vonder und bring me coffee, please, before Molly explodes machine?" Solbiort looks tired... as if she's been up all night.

Elgyn studies Solbiort. "What in the world have you been up to, Captain? You look like you could use more sleep and less coffee..."

Solbiort grins tiredly at Elgyn, "Couldn't agree more, di-di... but need to make decisions vith everyvon before can sleep." She pulls out her datapad and starts replicating the conversation as accurately as she can, while it's still fresh in her mind. Elgyn hesitates and puts down his hogleg... his strong hands suddenly going to Solbiort's neck, and kneading at it and her shoulders. Solbiort sighs, setting the terminal in her lap and letting her eyes go half-closed. She's quite tense, although the massage helps... a few minutes later she rumbles quietly, "Di-di, you keep that up, am going to fall asleep here... und that vould be bad..."

Elgyn smiles in spite of himself. He removes his hands from her shoulders, "I'll save the rest of it for later then, Solbiort."

Solbiort smiles tiredly, "Rest of it? Mm... must take you up on that, then." She sighs softly, picking up her terminal again, "Later, though." Elgyn watches Solbiort from behind for a while, his brow knit with worry. Then he moves over to his station and does what he was doing some of the night before -- using the practice programs to hone his accuracy with the ship's guns.

Solbiort stays at her post for about half an hour, to be sure everything's running smoothly for departure. She also transcribes as much as she can remember of the conversation she just had with the Far Thunder operative. Once the ship is out of atmo, though, she sighs again, tucking the terminal back into her belt, sets the ship to call her if anyone 'waves or there's any need for her, and murmurs to Elgyn, "Come, di-di. Must have coffee und plan."

Elgyn smiles. "Not too much coffee... you're going to sleep after," he asserts.

Nigel stumps his way into the commons, where he would have headed for his morning coffee with or without the captain requesting a meeting. Molly is already in the galley making said coffee. It's either a promising sign or a disturbing one that she's wearing protective gloves. The scent wafting from the galley seems like it's gearing up to bodily pick up Nigel and smack some caffeine into him. Nigel eyes the coffee machine and pulls up a seat, asking Molly quite deadpan, "Do I need to line my stomach with lead to drink that stuff?"

Molly's answer is a little slow in coming. "Uhm... you might want to take your first cup slowly."

Nigel peers at her, trying to figure out if she's serious or if the timid Browncoat is growing a sense of humor In the end, he decides to play it safe and sips the coffee very slowly. Raj lumbers into the Commons, homing in on the ersatz coffee. He takes a seat and says, "Present, mostly. What the hell is wrong this time?"

Nigel looks over at Raj, "Bet that it has to do something either with the indepcicles or the captain seducing a councilman's daughter?"

Solbiort wanders into Commons looking rather tired, and flops into a chair with her mug of coffee. "Nihao, all. Everyvon had their coffee?" She grumbles at Nigel, "Vas not Boros -- that vas... vhere vas that... Hera, I think? Pretty girl..."

Nigel smirks and turns around, holding his mug in both hands as he sips at it, "So that means the early takeoff has to do with my patients." Molly sets out coffee for those who don't have it. The scent has now progressed to where a likely name for this particular brew is 'El Luchador,' and the caffeine at least is promising to be as close to medicinal-grade as Molly could make it.

Solbiort says, "Ya, di-di, is about Indepcicles. Last night, as vas returning to Chimera, almost literally stumbled across Raj's Far Thunder contact." She grins a little tiredly, then frowns, "Had disturbing chat. He is very, very, very sure of cause, und also very, very, very sure no von else could possibly understand reasoning behind cause. Therefore vonce I leave him ve leave planet immediately -- don't vant to give time for unpleasant ideas like storming ship." She has a sip of coffee, then grimaces... then takes several long gulps.

Elgyn is sharpening his krisara. "Almost a pity," he muses. "Curious what it would be like to take on a Silver Wire." Molly listens attentively, fretting silently as she cleans out the coffee pot in the entryway to the galley.

Solbiort says, "Currently ve haf plan to ambush Far Thunder at Shadow. Problem is... doesn't matter if ve vin or lose -- ve are going into var zone, und aftervards somevon is going to demand your patients, di-di Nigel. So am vondering... do ve really vant to take them vith us? Vould it be viser to drop them off at either Einsort or Skamandrios?"

Elgyn looks surprised at that. "Do you think Einsort is actually a safe haven, now?"

Nigel squirms in his seat a bit as he considers that, glaring into his coffee, "They aren't better yet. This is an experimental treatment, and I don't want to turn them over to the gorram feds. Or anyone else for that matter."

Solbiort nods to Nigel, "Don't vant to either, di-di Nigel. Is vhy I am asking you if you vish to choose safe place to leave them." She looks tiredly at Elgyn, "Safe? Am not sure anyvhere is safe, di-di Elgyn... but vould like to let them decide vhere and who they go vith... rather than having Alliance or Far Thunder imprison them again."

Nigel smirks tiredly, "If I wanted them somewhere safe, I'd put them in the Twitches Ward with the other people that have the same symptoms, only milder."

Solbiort nods slowly, "All right... is there Tvitches Vard on Skamandrios?"

Nigel shakes his head, blowing out a breath, "No. There's not. It's sort of a localized thing. "

Elgyn spreads his hands. "Fair enough." He tilts his head. "Einsort might be the better bet, though. If they were connected to Far Thunder then it's likely Liu and Ranaka would be dead, and Five Dragons found out, no?"

Solbiort nods slowly again to Nigel, sighing thoughtfully. Finally she says, "Is true, Elgyn. Nigel, these are your patients. Myself, am thinking is unvise to take them into battle, but believe you know better vhat vould be good for them. Also, everyvon here vill be affected by battle, und by need to care for them if they are here. So... do they stay on Chimera into battle, or do ve leave them someplace safer?" She looks around at everyone for their input.

Nigel shakes his head, "They aren't going into battle. No gorram way." He smirks slightly, face looking slightly pinched, "I'd prefer to stay out of the way of guns and all that rot myself."

Elgyn purses his lips. "I would rather have them off the ship... but only if we can assure that Far Thunder doesn't know they're not aboard. It would ruin the trap." Solbiort nods to Elgyn and Nigel (although she looks a bit worried at Nigel's comment), then looks to Molly and Raj.

Raj shrugs, "I've wanted them off the ship from the start but at this point it really wouldn't make any difference, would it? If you're concerned for their safety, put them in a hospital. If your more worried Far Thunder will get them, keep them on board. If we're killed, there's a damn fine chance they won't make it out either."

Solbiort sighs, then looks at Molly. Molly pauses in her polishing of the coffee pot -- she's managed to apparently evict any hint of brew from it -- and notices people looking at her. She bites her lip. "I... if we can get them off the ship without Far Thunder knowing, I'd... well, that's what I would ask for."

Solbiort nods, "All right. So we need to secretly get them off the ship before we go to Shadow. So... Skamandrios or Einsort? Any preferences? Let me check nav logs to see vhich is easiest to sving by..."

Elgyn muses, "Einsort, if possible. Didn't someone tell them we were going to Skamandrios?"

Solbiort says, "Think so. Vanted them to think ve vere doing pick up there."

Elgyn nods. "Which means they'll be watching there. We can always make up some sort of fake way of making like they're coming on board... the reverse would be trickier."

Solbiort looks up from her nav-book and says, "Mm, good point. So according to current nav locations, should be easy to sving by Einsort on vay out of Mishka." She sighs, looking up at Nigel and Molly, "So, next qvestion -- you two vant to stay vith them on Einsort, or come vith?"

Molly opens her mouth, then closes it and looks like she's thinking hard. Nigel thinks about that question, and as he does, his knees both start bouncing up and down, the little doctor's hands tight on his coffee mug. Molly glances to Nigel, then to Solbiort. "I know I said I wanted to protect him -- them," she corrects herself. "But it's coming to the point where being proactive about that is the best thing. I'll stay with the ship, though I hope that Einsort has some good medical people."

Solbiort sighs in quiet relief, then smiles at Molly, "Sheh-sheh for staying, Molly. We really need your help as gunner. I promise as soon as ve safely can ve'll try to head back to Einsort so you can rejoin them."

Nigel still has his head down, brows drawn together and jaw clenched as he thinks, one knee still jittering up and down. He's not said a word so far. Solbiort waits quietly, sipping her coffee so Nigel can make up his mind in his own time. Nigel takes a very, very deep breath and gulps down the rest of his coffee before saying, "I'll... I'll stay on the ship. You'll need me down in engineering." He still looks as if he might fly apart from the jitters.

Elgyn looks at Nigel sympathetically. Solbiort gives another small, relieved sigh, then smiles at Nigel, "Sheh-sheh, Nigel. You're right, ve need your help." She grins then, and doesn't hug the jittery little doctor -- that would definitely cause him to fly to pieces, she suspects!

Solbiort has another gulp of coffee, shudders, and sets her mug aside, "All right. So, ve go first to Skamandrios, then Einsort, then Shadow... vhere ve see come vhat may." She smiles a bit tiredly, adding, "Und vonce ve are safely into the black... think I vill sleep a bit."

Nigel nods once and sets his mug down, leaving without another word. Elgyn looks firmly at Solbiort. "You'd better."

Solbiort chuckles quietly at Elgyn's vehemence, "Ya, di-di." And with that the ship is streaking out into the black, a short jaunt of a few hours to the sub-moon of Skamandrios....

Scarlet Chimera, Oblivion Falls docks
Skamandrios, submoon of Boros, moon of Adarra, Mishka Quadrant

With arrangements made with Five Dragons ' people, the ship lands at Oblivion Falls. After the cargo is offloaded, her people are there waiting. Two crates, each looking like they could easily hold a cryo-box, are solemnly loaded aboard the ship, with several heavies keeping strict watch over them. Hopefully any watcher would imagine it was Wintarsen and Danviere being loaded aboard. The air is disturbingly still as the empty crates are stowed and secured aboard the ship. The crew feels like they're being watched -- but cannot tell from where or by whom. Careful vetting of the security systems doesn't show any unwanted visitors aboard the ship, but past experience can't be erased; it's impossible to shake the feeling of invisible eyes watching from every platform, tower, and alley.

Elgyn seems overall unhappy about this, but manages to keep from randomly drawing his gun and shooting at nothing, which would only make the locals flustered and the law enforcement stern. Solbiort is prone to pacing, but curbs it when necessary. Nigel stays down in engineering as much as he possibly can, while still keeping a decent eye on his charges in medbay. Once the cargo loading is completed, Solbiort has two errands to run, but she informs the others that as soon as she's done they'll be departing posthaste.

The AllSec drop-box contains the instructions to follow as far as meeting with the Colonel. All things considered, they really ran out the red carpet this time. Basically, someone took the 'evading pursuit' handbook and dumped it out for Solbiort. Fortunately she doesn't have to do more than follow a few directions and watch for some telltale signs, most of which don't appear. By the time she reaches the little pump room under one of the city's outlying buildings and followed the tunnel a few dozen turns, she feels so safe from pursuit that she wonders if she's managed to get lost.

That feeling disappears when she knocks on and opens a single, lone door in the viaduct tunnel, to find a small team of gentry-suited Security persons. One of them is tucking a silenced autolock under their coat with grim care, while another is dragging a body out a side door. The Colonel is also standing there, looking grave as he leans a bit on his cane. He nods to Solbiort as she enters. "Major, thank you for coming, especially in such a convoluted manner. As you can see," he half-turns to the side-door that is just closing, "Far Thunder has been a little more... alert than usual. Fortunately they believe this involves arranging for the 'transfer' between you and Kota."

Solbiort raises an eyebrow, watching the body being removed... then looks worriedly at the older man, "Colonel, is this safe? Vould not vish harm to you on my account." She hastily adds, "Ah! Also, transcription -- you receive?"

The Colonel nods. "It's safe. As safe as any place can be in the 'Verse right now. This worked to our favor, actually. Be eliminating that agent we managed to give the impression that we are arranging that transaction with Kota." At her second question he nods, "Yes. I received it, and it was fascinating reading." He tucks his cane under his arm, pulling out his glasses and a flimsy. "Banner-Sergeant Andrew Siddhanarta of the Silver Wire Special Forces unit. His was indeed the Silver Wire team sent to apprehend Wintarsen, which inexplicably failed. He was reprimanded twice for conducting an investigation into his team's failure without official authorization. It doesn't surprise me that Far Thunder eventually took him on."

Solbiort sighs quietly, murmuring, "Feel somevhat sorry for him. Seemed nice boy."

Yuan arches a brow and nods. "He was a good soldier, highly decorated and well-regarded. His loss to Far Thunder is a harsh one, if they can recruit and keep him and others like him."

Solbiort looks puzzled, "His loss? He vas killed?"

The Colonel says, "No, I meant that losing him to Far Thunder was a harsh blow to us. I worry what it is that Far Thunder is doing or saying to recruit otherwise good and honest Alliance soldiers."

Solbiort shakes her head, "Do not know, sir. He vould not give reasoning." She's silent a moment, then adds quietly, "Think he is perhaps struggling to maintain conviction currently, though." She sighs a bit regretfully again, then politely adds, "Colonel, vould you care to sit und talk to me about our... original intended subject?"

Yuan nods a little. "He sounded that way, yes. And certainly, Major." Solbiort will courteously wait until he's seated, then sit nearby, and wait for his... instructions? She's not entirely sure precisely why he was so insistent on meeting her about Five Dragons, but she's happy to accommodate him. He settles into a chair, letting out a faint grunt as he sits. "Just to ensure business is completely taken care of... is there anything in addition to what we have arranged that you will require?"

Solbiort considers for a moment... then simply shakes her head, "Colonel, if ve can field a mixed group of former Browncoats und current Alliance to battle Far Thunder together, cannot think of better refutation to offer them. Even if ve lose that battle, ve vill haf shown their assertion is incorrect."

He nods. "Good. We'll do what we can to make that happen." He lets out a breath and rubs his eyes. "Major... Solbiort," he corrects himself after a moment, "If I may call you by your given name?"

Solbiort blinks a bit startledly... then smiles, "Vould be honored, Colonel."

Yuan nods. "Solbiort, please correct me if I'm wrong, but... you say you are intending to marry Ji?"

Solbiort looks a bit puzzled, "Ya, Colonel, if she vill have me. Is how is done on Midgaard. You did not know? Or you already haf married her?"

He shakes his head. "No... no, we were never married. And by you mentioning it to me I can only surmise that she described some of our... history together."

Solbiort says, "Neh, sir, she mentioned only you knew her und did not approve of her... life choices. I haf perhaps figured out a bit more, but she is, um... soul of discretion, I think is the phrase?"

"Mmm. She's precise, accurate, assertive, and driven. From what I understand these are excellent choices in a hearth-wife on Vagner -- forgive me, my Midgaardian is not terribly good. And I have little doubt she would do very well in such a way." He pauses, the looks pointedly at Solbiort. "She told you the story of how she got the five dragon tattoos, yes?"

Solbiort nods, "Ya, this she did share vith me."

"I see. I have been a servant of the principles of the Alliance since well before the Unification War. I am a man of law and order -- laws allow us to work together, and prevent the wolves from overcoming the flock from within. I am not a legalist bastard, but the laws are there to protect people. She followed her path of revenge upon the Tong that killed her parents -- something I cannot bring myself to fault her for; rather I admire her for it -- but then she did not return to the straight and narrow. Instead she carved out for herself a criminal empire on Skamandrios based on smuggling, graft, gambling, racketeering, and usury. Buddha knows how you came to be involved with her organization. She could have returned to her position of economic power. Instead she chose to dive deeper into the shadows."

Solbiort nods silently, listening carefully. The Colonel continues, "Her ability to be loyal is unquestioned -- she's very careful about whom she gives her word to. And she has always been perfectly honest about what she does and what her dealings are, at least to those not of law compliance whom she is dealing with. But something made her stay in the shadows after she avenged her parents. I was never able to find out what, Solbiort. Maybe she told me, but I never understood. Maybe you will have better fortune in learning what it was. But unless you truly believe it does not matter, it has no bearing on who Five Dragons is, then I think you should try to get that answer."

Solbiort says, "Is my hope to be so trusted, Colonel. Vould very much vish to bring her home vith me to meet my mothers after this... situation vith Far Thunder is resolved. Vould be thrilled to haf her vish to run a holding, even. But... cannot ask my people to follow her if she cannot commit to honesty, justice, und generosity to them also." She smiles, "Already know she can be fierce, strong, fearless, und courageous."

"Oh, she will be," the Colonel grumbles a little. "Of that you can be sure. She is all those things and more. Just be certain, Solbiort. No matter how long you spend with someone, no matter how much you think you know them... there'll always be one more little closet that remains unopened...." His voice trails off a little, as if he's not entirely certain where to take that thought. Solbiort waits silently, not intruding on his memories unless he wishes to share. She wonders if he knows he has a son... and if that would change his current feelings if so.

He seems lost in silent reverie for a little less than ten seconds before seeming to have the world come into sharp focus again, and he looks up at Solbiort. "Our time is coming to an end, I fear. Already Far Thunder is attempting to move agents into position to cover for the one they lost but five minutes ago. Will you be bringing Wintarsen and Danviere into the battle aboard your ship?"

Solbiort studies the Colonel for a moment... then says quietly, "If you ask me again I vill tell you, Colonel... but do not vish to thoughtlessly endanger you by giving you information vhich is equivalent to a death sentence from Far Thunder."

He holds up a hand. "No. It is well. If all goes well, though, Far Thunder will end over Shadow. If not, then we may as well hand them the keys to the Shi Kai, since they will surely accomplish their goals. If we get out of this, I imagine Parliament will be sending many operatives out and about to make audits of other black projects that they think are shut down."

Solbiort nods thoughtfully, "This is good." She glances at the Colonel and adds, "And... Vintarsen und Danviere? Vhen this is over und Far Thunder dispelled... vhat plans are there, if any, for them?"

Yuan is standing now. "As I said, Solbiort... they will be granted the amnesty offered to all Independent combatants during the War. If they choose to take it, no action will be taken against them. I will personally see to that, if need be."

Solbiort says, "Sheh-sheh, sir." She hesitates, then adds, "If this is overly greedy of me, Colonel, then please say so... but assuming ve triumph, may I ask for some revard for my ship und crew?"

Yuan looks at Solbiort for a moment before going "Hah!" although not without a touch of humor. "Considering they were dragged into this rather unwittingly, yes. It's not their fault they got Wintarsen foisted onto them by Fate and Chance. They deserve a bit more than the Alliance's undying gratitude. I will discuss this with the Military Council and we will make a suitable reward package. It's the right thing to do."

Solbiort smiles, "Sheh-sheh, Colonel. It vould make me feel much better for them if I can make sure they are vell cared for." She runs through a quick mental list of what to request for everyone, should she be asked. Nigel will want more goodies to play with in the ship's engines. Molly... probably just to be left alone with enough money to make sure Wintarsen and Danviere are cared for. Raj, she doesn't know. Elgyn... perhaps to be able to return to Ulundi whenever and with whomever he wishes, without fear of legal repercussions? She'll have to check with both of them. For the ship, probably just combat pay for them all for the appropriate amount of time. She hms thoughtfully to herself. Does she want anything? She considers a bit... then grins internally. Sure, she'd like a promotion and for the Alliance to continue engaging in peaceful trade and growth with her homeworld! Aside from that, though... she thinks she's fine. She likes tracking down her goals herself, after all.

He nods. "Very well. Is there anything else, Major? We should probably disperse shortly and each be on our way."

Solbiort shakes her head, "Neh, Colonel." She smiles internally at the switch back to 'Major' instead of 'Solbiort.' Truth be told, she's a tad bit more comfortable with that publicly anyway. She adds, "Sheh-sheh for your time und good advice, sir."

"Good fortune to you and your crew, Major. I hope to see you on the other side."

Solbiort grins, her eyes lighting up, "Alea jacta est, sir!" She follows the same care in leaving as she did her arrival, not wishing to assist Far Thunder's operatives in any way.

Some time later she's just as cautiously approaching the locale where she is supposed to meet Five Dragons' people, who will lead her on in to where the Dragon Lady is currently residing. Solbiort checks her belt once again, making sure the little gift package is still there and secure in her pouch. She mentally crosses her fingers the lady will be pleased... then paces carefully forward. Noug again apparently appears out of the woodwork, and with the same caution as before leads Solbiort through the forest to the cave. Since they were here last, Five Dragons has apparently insisted on anti-stealth measures, with a number of concealed cameras, sensors, and the like. It seems rather elaborate, but then again, when your hunter can be invisible himself...

Solbiort is actually a bit relieved to see Five Dragons is taking security very seriously. Once they enter the cave she brightens noticeably, looking around and smiling at anyone who meets her gaze. She's quite excited about this visit! There is a faint air of tension, though Solbiort is greeted politely and warmly. There's also a bit more activity; more couriers and more toughs becoming more and more familiar with, essentially, guerilla warfare, though they aren't fighting anyone just yet. Noug shows Solbiort to the doorway to Five Dragon's quarters, and the woman is already standing and smiling as Solbiort arrives. "Captain! So very good to see you again!"

Solbiort beams in spite of herself, striding forward to sweep Five Dragons up in an enthusiastic hug! She blinks a fraction of a second later, and hastily puts the lady carefully back down, "Er, shuh-muh! Vas not thinking -- have been, ah... right, shuh-muh, shuh-muh!"

Five Dragons gives a bit of a startled sound, then laughs, putting her hands on Solbiort's arms. "It's fine, Captain. I'm very glad to see you, too. You've been well? Nothing has been going wrong?"

Solbiort smiles down at the lovely lady, "Very vell indeed... und better now. You haf also been vell? Recovered from surgery?" She doesn't unloop her arms from about Five Dragons' waist if the lady leaves her hands on Soli's arms. She just... feels so nice!

Five Dragons nods, smiling. "Yes, I've not fully healed yet, but I'm almost there. The doctor says I should still be a little careful for a time. Gunshots are not something one recovers from right away."

Solbiort blinks, her affectionate hold on Five Dragons abruptly loosening, "Freya! I didn't know, lady -- have I been too rough?" Worriedly she adds, "Vhere vere you harmed? Should you sit?" She glances around hastily for where to gently deposit the lady.

Five Dragons laughs softly and shakes her head, squeezing Solbiort's arms a little. "No, no, captain, I'm fine, truly. Thank you, though. I had been shot in the shoulder in our escape from the compound, but it's healing well."

Solbiort looks relieved, but will still try to gently draw Five Dragons to sit with her on the small bed, "Am relieved to hear you are better, then."

Five Dragons walks with Solbiort to sit beside her on the bed -- not in Solbiort's lap, but sitting close enough to remain in constant physical contact with her. She smiles quietly. "I'm hoping that we can leave the cave soon, I admit."

Solbiort nods, "Ya, me also." She makes sure Five Dragons is comfortable, then takes a deep breathe, gathering her nerve. "Lady... requested this meeting to ask favor of you, please. May I?"

Five Dragons smiles leaning back a little and reaching up to very lightly brush a stray lock of Solbiort's hair. "Of course, Captain."

Solbiort tilts her head and smiles at the touch, her slightly stern expression abruptly warming. She nods a bit, pleasantly distracted and trying to collect her thoughts again, then rumbles carefully, "Is common practice on my homevorld, vhen going to battle, to beg a token of a lady fair, so she may be inspiration und remembrance of home und beauty." Solbiort takes another breath, turning to carefully take one of Five Dragons' small hands in her larger, calloused ones, "Lady Ji, if it is not too bold of me, may I please have token of you to carry vith me to this upcoming battle?"

Five Dragons smile slowly. "Why, Captain. I'm pleased and honored you ask." She looks around. "I confess, my wardrobe is a little sparse lately, but I do have something I would like to give to you as a token."

Solbiort sighs softly in relief, relaxing a bit... then beams in anticipation. "Vhatever you vish vould be fine, lady. Is that it is from you vhich makes it special."

Five Dragons grins, standing and leaning on Solbiort's shoulder a little to do so. "Hmmm," she says thoughtfully, smiling. "Ah! Yes, perfect...." She goes to the small chest near the bed, opening it and pulling out a translucent black silk scarf embroidered in gold thread with a pattern of five intertwined dragons. "Will this be suitable, Captain?" she asks merrily.

Solbiort's eyes widen a touch at sight of the lovely scarf. She says gravely, "Is fery beautiful, lady, like you. Vill vear it vith pride, und endeavor to bring it back vith great honor."

Five Dragons smiles warmly and walks over to sit beside Solbiort again. "I know you will, Captain. I've no doubt of that at all. So... how does one wear such a token?"

Solbiort takes another breath, trying not to be distracted by the easy grace with which Five Dragons moves. "Ah... usually is tied to belt. If in armored jacket is tied about neck instead." She studies Five Dragons a moment, then smiles hopefully, "You vould perhaps like to tie onto belt yourself, lady?" Five Dragons grins and nods, leaning over to start to tie the scarf to the front side of Solbiort's belt, taking her time about it and not appearing to hurry. Solbiort sits very still as she does so, but eventually can't resist lightly brushing back a stray lock of Five Dragons' dark hair... and letting her fingers lightly trail along her shoulder and the back of her neck -- if the lady does not seem to mind.

She doesn't seem to mind at all, making a softly comfortable sound in fact as she looks up briefly at the touch, eyes bright. She finishes tying the knot, snugging it close, then almost purrs, "There. I hope it brings you good fortune in the coming trials, Captain... and brings you back."

Solbiort carefully puts an arm around Five Dragons as she finishes, "Sheh-sheh, lady. I... haf somezing for you also, if you vish?" She produces the small, colorfully wrapped package, adding, "Do you, ah... know anyzing about my home, lady?"

Five Dragons looks a little surprised. "I... know only very little in passing, truth be told, Captain. I mean to learn more, but we don't even dare access the Cortex here...."

Solbiort hesitates, then hands the package to Five Dragons, "Then... maybe you let me tell you a little?"

Five Dragons arches a brow curiously, then smiles and delicately accepts the package, holding it in her hands. "I would like to learn more, Captain, if I might."

Solbiort smiles, pleased, "Vould love that!" She grins, adding, "Actually, have somezing I downloaded from Cortex before coming here vhich I thought you might like also? Is thesis written by nice young boy who help me pick out that gift for you. Is professor at Boros University named Alexander Kali, but is also very sweet, gentle, good-tempered boy." She takes a breath, then also explains about Midgaard being a bit shy of possible Alliance reactions to their culture, so the thesis was somewhat... edited by the young man before he presented it. She further explains the basic Midgaardian family structure: a valkyrie, her valdojer, and their horse -- and then explains the system of trading bracelets to signify union. Then, a little shyly, she grins and says, "Open present, please?"

Five Dragons contemplates this, smiling slowly. "The gift of knowledge. Thank you, Captain." She blinks a little then, and gingerly opens up the package. It takes a moment for Five Dragons to register just what it is in there. She takes in a sharp breath. "Captain... does this... is this... engagement...?"

Solbiort flushes, but shakes her head and reassuringly rumbles, "Neh, lady, is bracelet for horse. For engagement und marriage ve vould exchange our bracelets of the heart -- see? This is mine." She holds out her left hand so the bracelet is visible, "Band tells of me, who I am." A little shyly she adds, "Vould, um, vould be happy to assist you in finding or creating yours, though?"

Five Dragons thinks for a moment, then smiles widely. "So, this is a hope to find a 'horse' for us, someday?"

Solbiort blushes! "Ah... ya? If, ah, if you so vanted?"

Five Dragons laughs softly and takes Solbiort's hands in hers. "Then I accept, Captain." Solbiort is still flushed, but lights up with happiness, gently bringing Five Dragons' hands up to give them several lingering kisses. The lady is a little more nimble, however, and instead of her hands, Solbiort finds Five Dragons' lips instead, kissing back with equal, lingering pleasure. Solbiort has a moment of delicious shock tingle across her skin at that wonderful touch -- and then she gladly puts her arms about the lovely lady. She draws her gently close, prolonging and savoring the kiss for as long as Five Dragons seems to enjoy herself. As far as Solbiort's concerned, she's happy to gently caress her lovely lady and trail kisses across her soft lips forever!

Einsort, moon of Fujisan, Mishka Quadrant

To say this is a surprise visit is an understatement. Einsort is still swallowed by the electromagnetic soup being put out by Fujisan, making any sort of 'wave and Cortex runs impossible. Nothing much has changed: the same signal on the lamps grants the ship passage, and aside from perhaps a few more lights being put up, the main change is that there's now standard gravity in the cavern that the ship puts down in.

Solbiort is relieved the gravity generator is just what was needed. She checks with Nigel: are Wintarsen and Danviere ready to go, and does he have the requisite medication and instructions for them all packed to his satisfaction? Nigel lets the captain know that the patients are ready to be offloaded. He has instructions so detailed as to be perhaps a bit condescending to any medical personnel having to deal with them. Solbiort nods to Nigel, thanks him, then heads on down to cargo. After unstrapping from his seat, Elgyn takes a moment and unbelts his revolver... he's taken to carrying it around with him everywhere. But even as he removes the holster, he takes the gun itself and sticks it at the small of his back. Then he joins Solbiort quietly, tense... this will be a telling moment, he suspects.

The ramp drops, revealing the 'welcoming party.' Instead of heavy clothing, their gear is a bit lighter this time around. Maria Villanova has filled out some -- living and working in more substantial gravity has strengthened her a bit. Leon van der Stahl, her Silver Wire security chief, is there as well, this time in a flak jacket instead of spacesuit. Beside them are Liu and Ranaka. Solbiort smiles and calls, "Nihao! Sheh-sheh for allowing us to land! We have something we'd like to offer you, please?"

Villanova looks pleased to see the crew, if a bit curious as to their arrival. "Buenos dias, Captain!. Ah... an offer? What sort of offer...?"

Solbiort glances around for Nigel, "Our doctor vishes to leave two people vith you. Vould ask you to please care for und guard them? He has more details." She glances at Nigel inquiringly. Elgyn glances over at Liu and Ranaka curiously to see how they're doing...

Leon's brow arches. Slowly. Very slowly. "What... people?" he asks, in a voice that sounds like two mountains charging each other in a tectonic death match.

Solbiort raises an eyebrow right back at Leon, "Shuh-muh, didn't you tell us ve vere velcome here?"

Nigel steps up beside the captain, the information on the patients in his hands, "They're my aunt and uncle. I don't want them getting caught up in all this. Uncle... he doesn't really know who or where he is right now." Solbiort grins down at Nigel, then looks back up at Leon and folds her arms.

Villanova elbows Leon. He actually grunts a little. "Of course you're welcome here," she says easily. "We owe you for the gravity, see? So certainly we'll take care of... your relatives." There's enough of a pause in her words to indicate she's not entirely bought on the tale either, but she'll work with it. Liu and Ranaka are listening with a bit of a confused air, trying to puzzle out what is going on and who Nigel's relatives are.

Nigel is a little twitchy, shoulders hunched a bit and brows drawn together, "Aunt's got the same issue, but she's still comatose. This regimen I've got put down for you is supposed to help them both. We'll be back for them." The last has none of the nervous quality of the previous talk of them being his relatives.

Villanova nods to Nigel, accepting the flimsies. "Si, si, we promise to take good care of them. No harm will come to them." She looks up at Leon, who makes a quiet sound, but nods firmly. "They will be safe here."

Nigel nods, acknowledging the kindness as much as he'll let himself. Solbiort looks relieved, "Sheh-sheh very much. Ve vill do our best to come back for them as soon as possible." She looks up at Liu and Ranaka, adding, "Have something for you also?"

They both look surprised. "For... us?" Liu asks. He has been carefully avoiding Elgyn's gaze throughout this. "From Mother?"

Solbiort smiles and nods, producing the sealed envelope, "Ya; here. Thought you vould vant right avay."

Ranaka's own gaze drops a bit to the scarf that's knotted at Solbiort's belt. She looks levelly up at Solbiort and says wryly in Midgaardian: [No offense, Solbiort, but if Liu and I get married I am so not going to call you 'mom'!]

Elgyn notices Liu's actions... he sighs at that. But when Ranaka speaks, it takes him extreme effort not to burst out laughing! Solbiort also laughs, replying in kind with a very old affectionate nickname from Ranaka's childhood: [You wish, little bit!] Ranaka snickers softly at Solbiort's reply.

Villanova smiles to Nigel, glancing briefly at the interchange between Solbiort and Ranaka. "So, are they ambulatory? No, wait, you said your aunt was comatose. We'll make a cabin up for them."

Nigel says, "Uncle can totter around a bit, but I don't want him to stress himself too much. There's some guidelines in there about how much he should move."

Villanova nods. "Give me a few minutes; we can have some of our people help them off your ship, if you like."

Solbiort murmurs to Nigel, "You vant to accompany them off ship to see them settled, di-di?"

Nigel nods to Villanova, then turns and nods to Solbiort as well, "Yeah. I think I need that."

Solbiort nods, "Goot enough. You need anything from us to help, just say, ya?"

Villanova beams. "Si, we will! Leon, get some people, all right?" Leon nods a bit and moves off to organize a small party.

Solbiort quietly adds to Villanova, "Sheh-sheh again, lady. Is relief to hear they vill be taken care of."

Villanova nods soberly. "We're glad to help. The gravity conditioner was a blessing, I thought I was going to fall to pieces if we were here for another month in sub-optimal gravity."

Nigel turns and goes back to the ship, finding Raj and muttering quietly, "Remind me next time I need to tell someone something untrue that I suck at lying."

Raj nods sagely, "Will do. If you need some practice, let me know. We'll take you on a cargo run. Lots of chances there."

Solbiort grins at the interchange behind her, but says nothing. She knows she's not the 'verse's best liar either. Nigel smirks at Raj, patting the other man on the shoulder, "I think that might be a big, big mistake."

After a few minutes some of the Einsorti begin to help Wintarsen off the ship and carry Danviere off on a stretcher. It so happens that the crew are looking in the right direction to notice Leon turn, spot the two, and blink with abnormal slowness, like he can't decide between staring or closing his eyes to go back to sleep. Solbiort watches with silent amusement, leaning against the hatchway with her arms folded; she's curious as to how Leon will end up reacting. Leon eventually stops his slow blinking, and without moving his shoulders gives a long, gravelly, avalanche-like sigh -- or maybe it's a grumble -- before turning back to his work. Solbiort smiles faintly to herself. Looks like things will be all right for the Indep-cicles here.

The two Indep generals are helped down a corridor to their cabins, while Villanova watches them go as she stands near the rest of the crew, arms folded. "There're rumors that said he'd come back," she says quietly. "Just goes to show, can't trust anything you merely hear. Madre de Dios, they really did a number on him to get him to that state, didn't they?"

Solbiort nods silently. After some thought she murmurs quietly, "He's back, ya... but I am thinking there vill be no more generaling in his life, you know? Var is over. Time now for peace und growing."

Villanova nods, chewing her lip thoughtfully. "Well, we all came here to start new lives. He'll be safe here for as long as need be. We're not likely to get unwanted visitors."

Solbiort says, "Am very happy to hear it. Think some peace und qviet to recover is exactly vhat he needs. Vhat they both need." She glances curiously over at Villanova, "So... you are attempt to create true Third Vay here? Or something else?"

Villanova makes a quiet sound. "'True' Third Way, as you put it -- a place away from the Indeps and Alliance. They keep being at each others' throats; won't ever get a day's peace. But you don't have to be party to the bickering... just step away from it, step back, take a breath, realize that it doesn't have to be that way."

Leon makes another quiet sound. "Take breath... so long as the air processor still works. Be back soon; think it's on the fritz again." After this veritable speech Leon ambles off down the tunnel.

Solbiort chuckles quietly... then sighs softly, "Avay from the bickering... sounds vunderbahr."

Villanova smiles a little. "Si. But... we'll see. If we last a decade or two... I'll consider this a success. You can't hide a secret forever in the 'Verse."

Solbiort says, "How long has it been for you so far?"

Villanova laughs a little. "Let me see... since coming here, two years and seventy-eight days. And I try to live every one as if it were my last, and every one as if I can keep us hidden for a hundred years more if I do the right thing."

Solbiort smiles slowly, "Vell, I vish you much fortune, lady. Is there aught else ve can help vith?"

Villanova smiles back. "Muchas gracias, Captain. No, nothing, I think. You are on a schedule, though, and whatever it is that waits for you, I hope we might meet again."

Solbiort murmurs quietly, "Ve ride the vind, lady. Vith fortune, she vill bring us back around here again."

Elgyn takes a moment to sidle in Liu's direction as he oversees... "I'm sorry," he says to Liu honestly, without preamble.

Liu looks to Elgyn, hesitating a moment, then inclines his head in a bow. "Your apology is accepted, Elgyn. I imagine it was... a stressful time. Let it not be a source of bad blood between us in the future."

Elgyn smiles. That was easier than I hoped. "I agree. And thank you. The open wound gnawed at me."

Liu nods, still a little coolly. "It was... a little off-putting at the time, yes. But it is in the past."

Elgyn's expression gets a little pained as he notices the nuance of Liu's tone -- but there is little he can do that he has not already done. He's not exactly walking on familiar ground with this sort of thing. "It is," is all he says in response.

Liu nods, then smiles a little. "Well! We haven't been able to hear much while here, but there've been some interesting rumors of you and your ship. Which reminds me... which cruiser was it?"

Elgyn is taken aback. "What cruiser..." And then he gets it. "Oh, er... the Curry." He smiles faintly. "Yes, that was quite a bit of excitement."

Liu huhs a little. "'Curry' doesn't sound like the name of a cruiser. Oh, well. I'm sure it didn't matter to the dozen pirate gunships."

Solbiort blinks, half-overhearing the 'dozen pirate gunships' -- which causes her to have to grin and smother a cough! Elgyn blinks and starts to correct Liu... and then looks over at Solbiort, noting her reaction. "They, ah... sure didn't," he murmurs. He's not exactly any better at lying than Nigel. Still... "Of course, they didn't have the whole story. We did a little more than just guide the ships into the Curry's weapon arcs, if you know what I mean." Which is not a lie.

Liu actually smiles a little. "This is what I've heard. Along with the remarkable use of your ship's engines, electronic warfare, and an unused sink. I am certain it will make quite a stir from here out to the Fringe.

Solbiort blinks puzzledly... a sink?! Elgyn is similarly bemused. "What... what was said about the sink?" he queries after a moment. Solbiort grins amusedly, watching Elgyn dealing with 'reputation escalation.'

"Something about using it as an ersatz kinetic mine, packed with ball bearings in the drain and a hydrox charge."

Ranaka shakes her head, making a quiet sound. "I thought it had been put on a buckycable and swung around to smack into one of the gunships."

"Are you sure? I distinctly remember ball bearings."

Solbiort chuckles softly, then glances at Villanova, murmuring softly, "How do you get news here, unless ship brings it?"

Elgyn can't help but laugh then. "Much as I'd like to give my crew credit, we had no time to make a weapon like that! No, no, I fear all we had was Solbiort's creative piloting, Nigel's genius... oh, and we did manage to turn an interstellar dust cloud into a kind of smokescreen." He looks askance at Solbiort, and decides to tell the truth. "It really wasn't that many gunships though... and the Curry wasn't a cruiser. Clearly, the story got distorted along the way..." Solbiort smiles at Elgyn, pleased he's being honest with Liu.

Villanova grins quietly. "Si, a ship brings it. We have a small supply Firefly that makes some unobtrusive supply runs now and then; it returned a few days before you came here. We don't need it so much nowadays, since we're making a lot of our own food and there's plenty of ore here to smelt into nickel and iron to make tools."

Solbiort considers for a moment, then says thoughtfully, "Lady, vould like to ask your permission to tell my mothers about Einsort. Midgaardians are the best at creating viable underground worlds." There's a hint of pride in her voice, but not much. To her she's simply stating obvious fact.

Liu looks dubious at Elgyn's explanation, and Ranaka shakes her head. "Even so," she says with finality, "distortion or not, you've done something remarkable." She grins. "It will get distorted, certainly. May as well revel in it a bit so long as nobody is hurt." She glances to Solbiort at her words to Villanonva, considers for a moment, then nods a little. "And they can keep secrets very well," she adds softly. Solbiort nods to Ranaka's comment, gives a small bow of her head at the compliment Ranaka just gave her, then looks back inquiringly at Villanova.

Elgyn shakes his head to Liu. "Perhaps I will let the average man or woman believe the stories, or even our enemies, as it can only help us... but I would not allow untruths to go unremarked when they reach the ears of... friends." He replies tentatively: it is perhaps an overstatement -- they are not friends just yet -- but he has to admit that they would be good friends to have, and progress has been made in that direction. Therefore, it is a future devoutly to be wished.

Villanova chews her lip. "We'll... have to think on that, Señora Captain. I've heard a few things about Midgaard, or Vagner, and the underground constructions. Mm. I'll discuss it with van der Stahl and the others. We're still young and there's a lot of help we'll still need." She adds a little sourly, "Not like we have any sort of optical stealth capability, but here at least there's little or no outward appearance to our colony.

Solbiort's glance over at Elgyn, at his reply to Liu, is a bit proud! Elgyn notices Solbiort's approval this time, and cannot help but flush in response... not feeling as though he did anything special, but enjoying her clear approval nonetheless. Then she looks back over at Villanova and nods again, "Is up to you, lady -- vill not tell vizout your permission. But think it vould be of benefit to you both." She adds, "Und if you haf any qvestions, vould be happy to answer them vhile am here." She glances at Ranaka, raising an inquiring eyebrow -- does Ranaka want to let it be known where she's from?

Ranaka nods as well to Villanova, "Or myself, though the Captain's been back on Midgaard much more recently than I have. She'd have more knowledge of much of what you'd have questions about." Solbiort smiles at Ranaka, pleased that it seems Ranaka's come to peace at last with her past.

Liu looks carefully at Elgyn for a few moments, then nods a bit. "We're certainly honored that you seek to clarify the stories for us."

Elgyn makes an indelicate sound, suddenly embarrassed. "It is only as any decent person would do, sir. Your mother has shown us respect and given us aid... it would be insulting to respond by trying to impress you with petty tall tales." Solbiort grins at Elgyn, draping an arm companionably about his shoulders and giving him a gently approving squeeze.

Liu seems to relax somewhat, and his smile comes a little easier. "Rest assured, Elgyn, no matter the truth of that event, I am impressed nonetheless."

The look Elgyn gives Solbiort is mixed... not that he minds the embrace, but it only heightens his embarrassment. At Liu's words though, a smile brightens his features. "I have an impressive crew," he finds himself saying, and meaning it.

Solbiort grins with quiet pleasure at Elgyn, then smiles and nods politely to Liu, "Sheh-sheh from all of us, then." She glances inquiringly at Ranaka again, tilting her head slightly towards Liu, "Any luck?"

Liu nods, still smiling. "And one that brings honor to you and to yours." Unseen by him, Ranaka glances to Solbiort at her query, and tries hard not to blush and get a grin that's simultaneously cat-ate-the-canary and sheepish.

Solbiort laughs! Then she grins at Liu, waving a hand, "Not laughing at you, shuh-muh -- is girl thing!' Elgyn blinks, and is distracted by Solbiort's sudden laugh... and then sees Ranaka's expression, which certainly startles him and makes him wonder. Liu arches a brow, and looks around at the two Midgaardians. By then Ranaka has composed herself and politely arches a brow at Liu's curiosity. Solbiort simply grins in great good humor.

Liu's curious gaze travels to Solbiort, and for the first time drops down to notice what Ranaka noticed almost immediately. He blinks. "Isn't that... is that Five Dragons'?"

Solbiort beams a bit proudly, gently smoothing the token scarf down with her free hand, "Ya. Is token to vear into battle from your mother. Am courting her." Elgyn looks sideways at Liu, wondering how he'll take that...

Liu blinks. Twice. "I...." Ranaka pats his shoulder, smiling. He can't seem to form a coherent thought.

Solbiort gives Liu an inquiring look -- then suddenly laughs! "Ah, not to vorry, pretty -- did not take advantage of you that night! Also, do not vant to be called 'mom.'" She chuckles good-naturedly. Elgyn is certainly now confused, as he doesn't know the whole story... and isn't sure he wants to know!

Liu blinks again. "Of... which night, now? 'Mom'? Er...." He coughs, straightening and bowing, though he can't get his confused look off his face. "I, uhm... thank you, and... er... I...." He considers for a moment. "If... you are to be mother's... I mean, Five Dragons', er, mother's spouse, then I look forward to getting to know you better."

Solbiort smiles, straightening and courteously returning the bow, "Sheh-sheh, honored Liu; I do indeed look forvard to perhaps someday being your mutti's valkyrie, und bringing her home to meet my family, und meeting all of hers as vell." Elgyn only looks thoughtful during all of this, quite silent. Once she finishes her eyes get a glint of mischief and she adds, "The night I refer to vas night vhere ve haf small bet over who could drink ozzer under table!"

Liu winces and half-touches his forehead. "How could I forget that..." he mutters flatly. Ranaka is stifling her own laughter. "I'd warned you," she says cheerfully.

Solbiort grins wickedly, leaning slightly so her shoulder companionably brushes Elgyn's. She's in a great good mood as she adds, "Perhaps someday you cover bill, ya?" She chuckles.

Liu murmurs, as if the hangover from that event is still lingering, "I shall pay back that bet someday soon, I promise."

Solbiort chuckles again, waving one hand, "Vas much pleasure, di-di Liu -- not to vorry. Vas kind of you to allow me to so enjoy myself."

Liu ducks his head in a bow. "I was... glad to help, Captain."

Soon thereafter the Einsort folks are done, and the Chimera crew starts returning to the ship. Solbiort steps slightly between Elgyn and the two Five Dragons people as Elgyn turns to leave, blocking their view of him. She follows him back to the ship, and as he walks Elgyn can feel the pistol being gently withdrawn from its former position in his pants, resting against the small of his back. Solbiort chuckles quietly, murmuring just for his ears, "Forgot this von, di-di? Or chust forgot holster?"

Elgyn is tensed for a couple seconds, but fortunately he realizes who it is before he does something stupid. "Hmm? No, I put that there intentionally," he says calmly.

Solbiort speeds up a bit and passes Elgyn so she's in the ship with the pistol hidden before her and so the Einsort folks don't see it. She gives Elgyn a perplexed look as she does so, "You vant to give them impression you do not trust them, di-di?"

Elgyn shakes his head. "Of course not, Captain. Which is why I hid it," he explains.

Solbiort pulls the hatchway closed, then checks the autolock to be sure the safety is on before she hands it back. She chuckles, "Di-di, sticking gun in pants is good way to lose part of ass. Also, vhen vearing vest, tough to hide that sort of thing vell." She tilts her head curiously, then adds, "Vhyfor you carrying autolock anyvay? Thought krisara vas more your veapon of choice?"

Elgyn gives Solbiort a sour look. "I am not a novice, Captain. I wouldn't do something like shoot my ass. And yes... I do prefer my blade. But in uncertain situations, I prefer to keep my options open."

Solbiort sighs softly, "Then vhy not holster? More honest is than sticking gun down pants like novice." She gives Elgyn a wry glance, "Shuh-muh, di-di, but gun in pants is like varning flag marking a novice."

Elgyn steeples his fingers together. "More honest, perhaps, captain... but not respectful. I only had to learn that lesson once. We could not be absolutely certain that the folk on Einsort were not connected to Far Thunder... or that Far Thunder had not found them. Therefore I prepared accordingly. My revolver also does not hide well, otherwise... so I made do with what I had."

Solbiort folds her arms and gives Elgyn a quizzical look, "Di-di, pistol in flap-snapped holster is chust tool. Hogleg in hand or gun in pants -- that is aggressive statement of mistrust." She sighs again, adding dryly, "Am hoping they didn't notice your autolock. Und as far as vhether or not Far Thunder vas on Einsort yet or neh -- ve already discussed that, und decided they vere not from the data ve had. If you vished to stay armed und paranoid, should have stayed hidden in cargo vith hogleg!" Curiously she adds, "Do you really not see difference in how veapons are brandished?"

Elgyn tilts his head thoughtfully. "It was a little different at home... we had no guns. Nonetheless, I see your point. And although I agreed along with you and everyone else that Einsort was most likely safe... I ended up deciding that it was better to be safe than sorry."

Solbiort stares a bit incredulously at Elgyn, "Vhat?! You chust decide on your own vhat plan for everyvon vill be -- und tell no von else vhat you are doing? Vhat vould you have done if your actions had gotten us all shot at?!" She adds, "You forget ve are supposed to be crew, a team, di-di. Crew trusts each other; communicates. Can't trust loose cannon who do vhatever they feel like vithout varning."

Elgyn blinks. "Captain, I decided on no one's actions but my own. Perhaps it was wrong of me to simply assume that you and Raj would be similarly careful... but what I did is not a reflection of mistrust of any of the crew," he says carefully.

Solbiort studies Elgyn, eyes narrowed and arms folded, "Di-di, are missing point here. First, gun in pants is not hidden -- says you do not trust folks you are talking to. Put in holster, hidden or othervise -- or don't carry! If you vant to hide veapon, talk to Raj -- his veapons stay hidden. Und second, your actions absolutely do reflect on und affect everyvon else here. You get yourself shot at, you get all of us shot at. You understand me?!"

Elgyn seems to muse over Solbiort's words, then finally sighs. "Yes, Captain."

Solbiort also sighs, then says gently, "Di-di... vhy is this difficult? Am I missing somezing?"

Elgyn shakes his head sadly. "It would seem that after all this time there are still concepts which I am not aware of. My intent -- all I ever have been trying to do -- is to protect you, and protect the crew. I do not do these things out of some desire to cause trouble, or innate belligerence."

Solbiort nods quietly, sitting on a crate and patting the space next to herself, "This I know, di-di. Come, sit... maybe ve can figure out vay to make this not so painful, ya?"

Elgyn purses his lips and sits. "The answer seems clear, Captain. Although it will feel foolish to do so, it appears I must simply come to you with any action I might take, before I do so."

Solbiort smiles, putting a companionable arm around Elgyn's shoulders, "Ai ya, di-di, maybe ve can come up vith some broad generalizations for you to vork from instead, eh? Might be bit easier that vay?"

Elgyn accepts the embrace, though he still seems chagrined. "What do you propose, Captain?"

Solbiort muses for a while, then says slowly, "Vell, let's see. First, no need to carry more veapons than you intend to use. I carry suoshi autolock; is all. Knife is chust tool. Have hairsticks you gave me for vhen I can't carry autolock. If ve're in ambush situation, have sniper rifle... but you haf seen how often zat von comes out. Heavy cow." She grins ruefully, then adds, "So vhat veapon you vish to depend on?"

Elgyn says, "I have always depended most on my blade, Captain... which I always have on me, unless force to give it up." He indicates the proof of that. "The only reason I carry guns at all is because the war has taught me the foolishness of bringing only a knife when my opponent has a gun."

Solbiort nods thoughtfully, "Good point, di-di. All right, vhy not holster an autolock also, und carry vith routinely? Or if you vish, could alvays make gun sling for hogleg?" She pauses, then says a bit diffidently, "You haf done target practice vith autolock, ya?"

Elgyn smiles. "I am proficient, yes. Given a choice, I would rather keep my revolver with me than the shotgun... like your sniper rifle, I use that only when the situation demands it."

Solbiort nods, looking faintly relieved, "Ah, goot! Much easier to explain autolock than hogleg." She grins, then muses a bit more, "So, vhat else... hm. Vhen you think is acceptable to shoot somevon, di-di?"

Elgyn considers. "When they have attacked you, generally. Or when there is clear intent that they are about to attack you."

Solbiort smiles, "Hokay. Vhat if they attacked you previously? If you see them again, is still all right in your mind to shoot?"

Elgyn purses his lips. "Only if it is clear that their intent is the same as before."

Solbiort nods thoughtfully, "So by that account, vonce they are unconscious should not shoot, ya? Because vonce they vake might not vish to continue fighting, ya?"

Elgyn seems to think seriously about that. "That is not always certain," he finally reports.

Solbiort smiles a bit sadly, "But is best to not kill unconscious, ya?"

Elgyn looks confused. "Why would you think that?"

Solbiort says, "Because as you say, di-di, they might not have same intent upon vaking."

Elgyn shakes his head. "No, that was what you said. What I said is that it is not always certain that they would not have the same intent. In some cases it is, in fact, certain."

Solbiort nods thoughtfully, "Hokay. In that case, am thinking ve should make sure you know not to kill unconscious. Is not honorable to murder helpless foes."

Elgyn starts to answer to the honorability factor, but then quiets, as he quickly sees there is no point in arguing different honor systems. "Captain... let me ask you a couple questions, in the spirit of this... thorough communication we are following." Solbiort nods inquiringly.

Elgyn says, "Let us suppose were knocked out... and I awoke in enemy hands. I was told that you and the crew were incarcerated elsewhere... perhaps being tortured. Or not. No, let us just say for a moment that you were being held, with of course, the threat of death over your heads. Yours and mine." Solbiort smiles, but doesn't say anything, just listening. Elgyn continues, "Would you honestly expect me not to do everything in my power, including killing my captors, to ensure our escape?"

Solbiort murmurs quietly, "Vould vish you to do your best, ya, of course, di-di. But sometimes leaving trail of carnage is not smartest vay to do that." She smiles ruefully again, "Example is bit contrived, too."

Elgyn says, "It is contrived, Captain, yes... but it is to make a point. I would do anything for captain and crew. For them to have spared me could prove to be entirely a foolish mistake on their part... even if I cause no deaths, I have just undone their achievement of neutralizing us, and possibly caused more damage in the process." He holds up a finger. "Now... let us turn this question upon Far Thunder for a moment."

Solbiort smiles, "Am still unconvinced rampant murder is necessary, but do continue, please."

Elgyn says, "They have shown through deed that they have far less restraint than I do. They are willing to kill innocents, they are willing to use abominable weapons, and to kill when killing is not even needful. They would appear to believe very strongly in their cause, and are willing to do things I never would to achieve it. Knowing that... can we take a chance on letting one of their warriors live? Never mind any talent they might have at getting out of their bonds... they already have incredible technology at their disposal... what if, upon waking, we discover that they can become as a human explosive? In that case our mercy would seem to indeed have cost us."

Solbiort says quietly, "Di-di... crew you slew who vere unconscious... vere not Far Thunder."

Elgyn nods. "I remember. And in retrospect perhaps I did them an injustice. But all I knew of them then was that they opened fire on men willing to talk. We did not know the truth of things then, and I acted on instinct."

Solbiort says even more quietly, "Di-di... unconscious crew you slew vas not who initiated combat."

Elgyn says, "And as I just said, I did not know that at the time. I am sorry. During the war, however, to leave a live enemy behind you was to risk far more than my own life. I did what I thought was needful."

Solbiort sighs, starting to feel a bit repetitive, but says again, "Di-di... var is over."

Elgyn just stares at Solbiort a while, brow knit. "As you wish, Captain. I will not cut down the fallen Far Thunder warriors."

Solbiort shakes her head tiredly, "Di-di, am not saying killing is never necessary. But am starting to vonder about vhat you call your instinct. Do you feel you still are in var?"

Elgyn's lips curl up into a slight smile. "If I did, I would have tried to shoot Reilly instead of just knock his block off."

Solbiort laughs! "Vell, at least ve are clear on not killing civilians, then!"

Elgyn's smile fades again. "We are at war, Captain... with Far Thunder. They declared it, not I."

Solbiort says, "But killing everyvon in a fight, vhen not in var... di-di, this is not goot. Cannot go doing that sort of thing. Ya, understand ve are in battle vith Far Thunder, but am talking about before -- on Shao Kung."

Elgyn sighs. "Captain, I can only say I am sorry so many times. We had to respond to them as if they were a threat. You were right there beside me, shooting men that had not shot at us... and for all you knew at that time, you might have been able to kill them with that first shot. Yes, perhaps making their end permanent was the wrong thing to do. But it is done, and I cannot undo it."

Solbiort is silent for a long moment, thinking. Finally she says slowly, "Di-di... am not sure how you define vord 'varrior.' But can tell you from personal experience that before person become varrior, they must learn goal is not to kill the most. Goal is to be von that need to kill least. This make sense to you?"

Elgyn is clearly trying to get it... but he finally gives up. "No. Can you explain further?"

Solbiort leans back, crossing her booted ankles and considering, "Vell, let's see... basically, is easy to kill people. Humans are fragile -- not difficult to end lives, und if goal is just to kill, no self-restraint needed. This is vhat most armies vant -- soldiers who vill kill easily und vithout qvestion. But varrior... varrior is more than simple butcher. Varrior knows vhen not to kill. Knows how to prevent fight from ever starting. Knows self-restraint. You understand?"

Elgyn nods slowly, seeming to comprehend. "I believe so."

Solbiort nods quietly, "Hokay. This is vhy varrior can move through society even vhen there is no var... but soldier, neh. Instinct is chust to kill things, to butcher vithout reason or restraint." She looks steadily at Elgyn, adding, "Vould like you to be varrior, di-di. Vould like to help you be that, if you vish."

Elgyn blinks, suddenly looking hurt. "Captain... do you think of me as some sort of mindless butcher? In the eight years we were together after the war I had no occasion to even draw my blade. Not even after you were needlessly shot at by that rich man's guards."

Solbiort says, "Mindless? No. Am chust vorried about your instinct, as ve go into battle. Is von thing to shoot at somevon who is shooting at you. Is another entirely to kill somevon who is helpless, vhether unconscious or othervise." She smiles ruefully, gently squeezing his shoulders, "Am glad you did not go back that night. Not sure I vould not have bled out if you had."

Elgyn does look slightly ashamed then. "I admit... for a moment I wanted to. It would have gained me nothing, but I wanted to punish them for their actions. But it was only a moment, Solbiort. I am sorry that I have tarnished your faith in me."

Solbiort sighs quietly, resting her chin on Elgyn's shoulder, "Di-di, faith in you is undiminished; don't doubt for second you vould villingly lay life down to save me. Vould do the same for you. But am thinking am more pragmatist -- vould rather neither of us in that position. Knowing vhen to kill und vhen not... that is part of not leaving trail of vengeful relatives behind us, you know?"

Elgyn hesitantly reaches around and encircles Solbiort's waist. "I suppose I do, Captain. And in my heart, I see the truth in your concern. Part of me almost welcomed the recent conflict... welcomed the chance to fight. It awoke a part of me that has been sleeping since the war." Solbiort listens and nods, encouraging him to continue.

Elgyn shakes his head. "I was sometimes confused by what Raj had to say about the war... about the massive amounts of death and destruction. I did not see it as he did... as a child I was invincible, doing my duty and doing it well. I was no assassin, but I did leave a trail of bodies in my wake, all in the name of doing what I thought would make my parents and my people proud, would bring victory to the Browncoats. I had my Code, surely, but none of that applied to the enemy soldiers. Life was simple, and as a child I had need for nothing else. But being with you, especially over the last few months, has been very complex... sometimes too complex. So it is little wonder I desired the simplicity of an enemy to kill."

Elgyn can feel Solbiort's rueful nod of agreement where her cheek rests against the side of his shorthaired head. But she remains silent, simply listening thoughtfully to his careful self-examination. Elgyn grimaces. "Perhaps that is the heart of my foolish actions, captain. I have been working hard to prepare to fight an enemy, so that I have taken... needless risks. I mean... honestly. There was no need for me to be as I was when I first saw Ranaka. She was never life-threatening."

Solbiort smiles again, gently hugging Elgyn with some relief. She rumbles quietly, "Di-di... trust you at my back, vithout qvestion. Is no von else I trust so. Don't need to impress me or anyvon else vith how qvick you are to kill. Far more impressive it is... to know vhen to spare an enemy."

Elgyn listens, then sighs and shakes his head. "I have been foolish, Solbiort. We will face Far Thunder... not to crush them, but only to insure our safety. Ancestors willing, beyond that there will never be a need for me to be the soldier I was."

Solbiort smiles, gently hugging Elgyn as she nods once, "Goot, am glad to hear it. Is enough for me, di-di."

Elgyn looks almost a little sheepish. "Hmm. Only problem now is how to tell Molly this. I promised her we would kill them all..." It's hard to tell if he's joking or not.

Solbiort chuckles, shaking her head, "You are funny, di-di." She sighs softly, still smiling, "Vould be surprised if Molly is bloodthirsty type anyvay. Doesn't strike me as so. Suspect she'd be relieved to hear othervise, if you told her that."

Elgyn shakes his head. "She is very gentle... but Far Thunder has cost her much, and she is angry. It was wrong of me to encourage her."

Solbiort nods quietly, regarding Elgyn thoughtfully, "Is too easy to give in to being soldier. Is vhy armies try to create them instead of varriors... less qvestioning of orders to kill vithout conscience." She considers, then adds with a faint smile, "Might be goot of you to talk to her about zis, ya?"

Elgyn just answers her with an embrace. "Wise words, my sonia," he says proudly. Solbiort smiles, returning the hug with silent pleasure.

One the eve of the next to last day of the Chimera's trek to Shadow, Solbiort is heading back to her cabin when she hears something unusual: singing. Well, perhaps this is not so unusual in and of itself, as Elgyn has been singing a lot more recently, but the song in question (from what can be heard) would seem to have a far more formal and ceremonial note to it. It's clearly in the language Elgyn has referred to as 'Ulundi,' although he has said again and again that their common tongue was actually much closer to Lingua, and 'Ulundi' was saved for special occasions. There is also a detectable scent of some unfamiliar incense.

Solbiort pauses, sniffing once, then hmms curiously to herself. She steps more quietly, not wanting to interrupt, and looks silently into the cabin before entering. Elgyn is apparently sitting cross-legged on the ground, singing with his eyes closed. It's noteworthy in that he's wearing nothing but a simple loincloth, sitting before the smoldering incense. His singing comes to an end mere seconds later, and without opening his eyes he says, "Come in, Solbiort."

Solbiort raises an eyebrow, not straightening from where she was leaning against the hatchway's seal with her arms folded. "If this is preparation for upcoming conflict, can go make tea until you are finished. Not in any rush."

Elgyn opens his eyes, looking calmly at Solbiort. "Please sit, Captain. I have been awaiting your return."

Solbiort studies Elgyn thoughtfully, her eyes narrowed in consideration... then finally she comes to some internal conclusion. She straightens and steps quietly into the room. "Vhy is that?" She closes the hatchway, then settles on her bed and pulls her boots off with a sigh. "Tired feet."

Elgyn waits for Solbiort to become settled. He stands, taking up the shell that was the incense holder, and anoints his face and his chest with the ashes, breathing deeply of the leftover scent. "I come before you alone, as I came into the world: no possessions save my honor and my deeds. I come before you to be judged worthy of Ascent. Hear, then, the tale of Elgyn of Musere." Solbiort had been reaching behind herself to loosen her braid, but she looks up sharply at that, going still. Her eyes narrow again and she frowns thoughtfully... then she slowly unfastens her braid, intently observing Elgyn.

Elgyn begins by telling of his mother and father Cheyvo and Undani, brave warriors who came together and, with their joined essence and their tutelage, raised young Elgyn. He tells of the lessons he learned at the feet of the arms master, in the woods with his sister Nuala, and from the healer of the tribe. He tells of contests won, and achievements in helping to keep the clan safe. "I avenged the death of my sister, though I did not till many years later give her proper honoring in my heart," he goes on to say. Then he tells of the war, of the duties he performed, of the warriors he sent on to honorable death.

Solbiort shakes out her heavy mane of fiery red hair, running her fingers through it like an impromptu comb as she silently listens. Elgyn pauses, as if to take a moment to moisten his throat. "In the eight years since the war I have served but one duty... but I have served it well. It is my proudest achievement to have done your will, to have learned from you, to have been at your side. If I have one regret, it is that I had never told you -- not till now -- how much you matter to me, Solbiort. Not as my sonia, not as my oathbound... but as the incredible woman you are, and the faithful companion you have become." Solbiort smiles, the cautious intensity on her face softening to a quietly relaxed warmth.

Elgyn's chest heaves as he takes a deep breath. "But I come before you now not as a supplicant, Solbiort. Tomorrow we go into battle... and it is the wisdom of war that tells me we are not unbeatable, that we might instead go together into honorable death. While I will not encourage that outcome, I will face it unafraid with you... I will face it as a man. I declare myself Elgyn... but also now Hetohakandyami... worthy of Ascent -- and take my place with the men and women of this crew as an adult."

Solbiort's lips carefully and silently form the new name, to remember it: Hetohakandyami. She considers the new name, then says slowly, "Vhat it mean, di-di?"

Elgyn smiles, an almost shy note in his voice, "'Sings to the firebird.'"

A slow smile crosses Solbiort's face... then she says gravely, "Is lofely name. Say it again, so I say correctly."

Elgyn chuckles. "Heto-hakan-dyami," he murmurs. "Not a precise translation, but... I doubt any will correct me."

Solbiort nods, carefully repeating the name to memorize it. Once she's fairly sure she won't accidentally mangle it, she curiously asks, "So... now cannot use Elgyn any more, or vhat?"

Elgyn blinks, and laughs a little more freely now. "Oh, not at all, Solbiort... could you imagine me going around with that mouthful of a name? No, no... I will always be Elgyn. My soul name is known only to those who I am closest to." Solbiort ahs! and nods in a bit of relief. Elgyn looks a little hesitant. "Solbiort... I have... a request of you, now that the ceremony is done."

Solbiort says, "Hokay, that I can remember correctly even in emergency situation." She grins ruefully, adding, "Vasn't sure if shortening of name vould be... incorrect, or vhat." She pushes her hair back, relieved the ceremony went so easily -- she'd worried about doing accidentally something stupid and ruining everything for her oathbound -- and looks inquiringly at Elgyn, "Hm?"

Elgyn's hand reaches out slowly, so that she is not startled, and takes her left hand in his right. "During my time with Amanzi I learned things I did not know about the Ascent. It is far more than what I just performed, but I could not have done the more involved parts of the ritual without my people... save one." He looks in her eyes, and seems a little more nervous than he was. "During the day of Ascent it is the duty of a sonia to teach the child... how to please their future shieldmate." The tone in his words is pretty explicit.

Solbiort sits silently and still, her hand resting in Elgyn's as she carefully studies him. She doesn't appear particularly fazed, just deep in thought. Several moments pass as she considers. Finally she says slowly, "I am vishing to be very clear on this, Elgyn. Are you saying the leaders of each tribe take each and every new 'adult'... into their bed?"

Elgyn blinks. "What? No, you misunder..." He calms, realizing where the misunderstanding could occur. "This is not some... exercise in prurience. 'Sonia' is not simply a title used by the clan chief, their mate, and the elders. Anyone who has reached a level of distinction enough to be a teacher is considered a sonia. And during the Ascent, one of the child's teachers is chosen to... teach them this as well."

Solbiort nods slowly, unruffled by the erroneous assumption of 'prurience' and still considering. "I think I see. This is an assigned task, or volunteered? Also, vhat if future partner of adult is not a varrior? Still is called shieldmate?"

Elgyn rubs at his neck, still feeling a little off center... this was not the response he expected... though to be honest, he was not sure what response he expected. "I do not exactly know the answer, but... from what Amanzi described, a parent assesses each of those sonia which have played a significant part in their child's life, and then asks one to participate in that part of the ritual. If they say yes, then it is so... if they say no, then another is asked. And yes... in my clan at least, all pairings are considered 'shieldmates.' There is no doubt that even a non-warrior would do whatever they could to assist in the physical and mental well-being of their partner. Is that not the responsibility of all those who have chosen to life-bond?"

Solbiort nods slowly again, "All right, think I understand now." She looks thoughtfully down at the jade bracelet around her right wrist for a moment, then looks back up at Elgyn, "So... sonia who teach about sex does so, then new adult goes off to find life partner?" She gives a soft, almost imperceptible sigh, then quietly asks, "Vhat of oaths, please? Is Ascent Ritual releasing from those also?"

"I don't know about 'go off to find' a mate... from what I know and what I have seen, these things happen in their time, as they do with all peoples. The sonia chosen is meant only to be a teacher... though it seems to me that the now-Ascended adult might always have a special fondness or connection with their first," Elgyn murmurs. "But as for your last question... Amanzi did not know. There was no precedent in his clan for a child that undertook an Oath." Elgyn absently notes that he asked Kali as well, but he decides not to bring up the professor's name right now. "C- ...Solbiort, if this request makes you uncomfortable, I understand. I just... you have taught me much, even in times when I was not the most willing student. I..." He trails off, not knowing what else to say.

Solbiort's fingers close gently around Elgyn's, and she smiles quietly at him. She murmurs softly, "Forgif, please, di-di... vas chust somevhat dismayed to all of a sudden realize you might be leaving. Am..." she hesitates, then sighs and continues, "Am not a very good valkyrie sometimes, di-di... am greedy. Don't vant to lose you -- especially now, before vhat may be last battle."

Elgyn blinks, and his heart is suddenly buoyed by Solbiort's admission. "Solbiort... I decided to do this ritual not just for myself, but also for you. You helped inspire me to take the onus on myself... to declare myself worthy to be an adult. I could not, would not leave you now... I will never leave you, not even in death," he whispers to her, almost tenderly. His fingers tighten on hers. "I love you. And no, I don't know if it's right for me to love my oathbound... and you know what? I don't care."

Solbiort smiles again, her emerald eyes almost... affectionately weary. She gently squeezes Elgyn's hand, "Make no more promises or declarations, di-di, until after battle, ya? Then... then ve see vhat ve have left." She sighs softly, pushing her fiery red bangs back and quietly adds, "For now... for now ve are alive, und you are recognizing you are adult, und this is goot enough for this moment, I think."

Elgyn seems slightly confused, trying to understand Solbiort's mind. In his head the declaration of his love would seem to be a big thing. But it seems to him that Solbiort views it as... what? He wants to understand, but is afraid to ask the question, suddenly drained of the energy that has carried him this far. "As you say, Solbiort," he finally replies.

Solbiort smiles, reaching out with her free hand to ruffle Elgyn's short-cropped hair, "Di-di, you are somezing else, truly." She's silent a moment, smiling faintly, then thoughtfully asks, "You remember how ve sleep on Midgaard, ya? Vould you like to do that tonight also? Am thinking before big battle vould be shame for anyvon to haf to sleep alone." She considers, then adds, "Who did not vish to, at least."

Elgyn takes about half a second to puzzle that one out... something else in comparison to what? At Solbiort's offer, though, the weight on his shoulders lifts lightly. "I would... I would very much like that, Solbiort," he says softly, the memory coming back to him of her tangled up in her furs, embracing him in the dark.

It's much later that night when Elgyn slowly and relaxedly awakes. He's still curled up with Solbiort spooning him, and it's a warm and peaceful feeling. A moment later he realizes he woke up because he's being slowly and gently stroked -- a long caress from his short hair, down his arm, along his side... and then back again. Solbiort is humming very, very softly as she does so. Elgyn blinks as he realizes what he's feeling, but relaxes seconds later, just absorbing this sensation... it's not a bad thing at all, and he mostly just wants to enjoy this closeness. After a while, though, he starts to wonder. "Solbiort?" he queries into the darkness.

The humming and stroking slowly stop, and there's a soft, warm sigh of breath against the back of Elgyn's neck. "Shuh-muh, didn't mean to vake you, di- er, Elgyn."

Elgyn's eyes get a little wider as she calls him by his given name instead of that nickname. Which is not to say that he dislikes it so much as... he sees it now as a barrier between them. He exhales slowly and cuddles back against her. "There are worse things to wake up to, Solbiort," he whispers softly.

Solbiort loops her free arm loosely about Elgyn's waist and rests her chin lightly against his shoulder. He can feel her cheek shift in a slow smile against his neck as she murmurs, "Am glad to hear it. Am..." She falls silent for a moment, then sighs softly against him again, "Am trying to... to re-sort how to see you. Have spent last... what... five years? -careful to alvays see you as di-di, after you tell me nefer you are able to be a horse. Am not... qvite sure how to look at you now, di-d- dammit!" She laughs softly, ruefully, "Cannot simply flip svitch and see you different. Need a bit of time; shuh-muh." A moment later she adds slowly, "Actually... still am not sure how you feel about being horse?"

The dark is thick with Elgyn's answering silence... his breathing is still even, but in the dark one cannot read facial expressions. "You are... not the only one who is sorry, Soli," he finally volunteers. "I let fear and stubbornness deny me what I wanted. Your mutter, Veleda, knew. But our time on Midgaard was discombobulating, and when the opportunity came to take a step back and embrace the ways of the child, I foolishly took it." At her final question there is a hesitant pause. "I have been asking myself that same question. But the answer yet eludes me. I... the issue is not whether or not I would wish to be yours for all time, firebird. The issue is Five Dragons. I feel like... I would be an intruder on your courtship. An interloper," he adds in a whisper.

Solbiort's voice is puzzled, "Fear of vhat, d-Elgyn?" She grins ruefully, adding, "Hearth-mutti Vela is like that, ya."

Elgyn's voice is such that it sounds like he is grimacing. "Fear of your ways. Fear of your men. Fear of the loss of self. Fear of you, even... is it not odd that in your presence I could feel so strong and yet so weak." He makes a rueful noise. "There is so much to fear it is hard to choose just one."

Solbiort is silent, although her fingers trail slow, lazy patterns along Elgyn's hip as she thinks. Finally she murmurs, "Shuh-muh, Elgyn, but I do not understand vhy you vould fear nice Midgaardian boys. They admired you. To them you vere exotic and far-traveled." She is silent for a while longer, still thinking... then finally says only, "Shuh-muh for scaring you, too. Nefer meant to do that."

Elgyn lets out a weak laugh. "It was nothing you did, Soli. And it was nothing they did either. It has... it has merely taken me a long while to grow up. To see that just because those boys were so alien to me, it did not make them wrong. To be brave enough to speak my mind, and to take a risk on our relationship. Which has... well, let us say that the water is still muddy in that regard... but it could be worse."

Solbiort smiles ruefully again, "Vhy it is so hard for you to speak your mind? Und how you see it so far... Elgyn?" She adds thoughtfully, "Vould be easier for you if I told you my mind also?"

"Because in trying to change what is, Soli, one can always likely not only fail, but irrevocably alter what is," he murmurs. "And the thought of losing you was devastating. It was the words of my crewmates that made me realize that in doing nothing, that might happen anyway." He pauses, then replies, "It would seem to me you have, Solbiort. You need time... to think. My actions have made things complex... and I suppose I understand why. Are you saying there is more?"

Solbiort laughs softly, "Aiya, vhat have crew been saying?!"

Elgyn's voice comes amusedly. "Captain, we are crewing with the biggest mouth in the 'verse. What hasn't he been saying would be a better question."

Solbiort considers for a moment, then says puzzledly, "Little Nigel? Vhy you say he has big mouth?"

"Because he says everything on his mind, and so bluntly I wonder that we don't just unleash him on Far Thunder!" Elgyn chuckles.

Solbiort also chuckles, but adds, "Only says truth, from vhat have seen. Vhat he has said on his mind?"

Elgyn says, "Forgive me if I do not remember the specifics... but he told me that if I did not tell you how I feel, I would lose you." He decides not to repeat what Nigel also said about bedding Solbiort till neither one of them could move.

Solbiort gently runs her hand in the same long, slow stroke he awoke to, and rumbles peacefully, "Ah, there he is mistaken. Vould not toss aside my huskarl like that." She considers, then murmurs, "Unless you vere meaning lose as in sexual partner?"

"I do not know what he meant exactly, but I think he knows I want more from you than just stolen pleasure between the sheets," Elgyn remarks. He hesitates, then adds, "Then again, he did say it just after I found out about you and... the Professor."

"Kali?" Solbiort chuckles, "Ah, he is very pretty boy, ya." She thinks a moment, then carefully asks, "Elgyn... you do understand horse is shared betveen valkyrie und her valdojer, ya?"

Elgyn purses his lips, leaning back into her stroking. "I do. That is part of my... well, there would seem to be a connection between you and Five Dragons. Meantime, I am the one that insulted her son, which does not help me in my task to puzzle this out."

Solbiort says, "Mmmokay... then vhy you feel intruder betveen her und I, please, pretty?"

Elgyn can't help but smile at that... in her arms, he does feel attractive. "Because there is a connection between her and you, Soli. A relationship that took precedence because of my frustrating reluctance to act."

Solbiort chuckles quietly, still comfortably tracing lazy patterns with her fingers along Elgyn's side. "Vhat it matter vhich come first vhen horse is shared vith eqval affection betveen valdojer und valkyrie, though?"

Elgyn sighs. "Because I am trying to get around my cultural bias, Solbiort... that families are pairs, not triads. And because I would assume that Five Dragons might be of that same mind."

Solbiort grins again, "Lofely lady accepted horse's bracelet for herself to give, as gift from me vhen ve vere on Skamandrios, Elgyn, und is interested in finding proper heart's-love bracelet for herself to give also, vith me later. Also has thesis by pretty Lexi to read, und seemed interested in learning more of my homevorld." She sounds deeply pleased by that.

Elgyn makes a surprised noise at that. "I did not know..." he murmurs... and suddenly feels idiotic for saying that. "That does not mean she would accept me," he finally adds.

Solbiort smiles, lazily nuzzling against the side of Elgyn's head, "No, does not... but see no reason vhy she vould not, pretty."

Elgyn makes a grunt of assent. "Forgive me, Soli... I should not make more obstacles for myself needlessly," he apologizes, suddenly feeling a wave of utter contentment with Soli nuzzling against his fuzzy hair.

Solbiort chuckles softly, "This is truth, ya. Am thinking perhaps di-di Nigel vas right, und you vorry too much." She smiles again, stroking her hand slowly along Elgyn's side once more, "So... no more vorrying tonight, ya? Now ve sleep, und after battle ve take stock of each other again. Is all right vith you?"

Elgyn breathes slow and evenly as he digests Solbiort's suggestion... feeling less shell-shocked than before. "I think, Soli, that faced with such a proposition I would rather live than die tomorrow -- which is not at all a bad thing."

Solbiort chuckles, "Glad to hear it. Vould not care to lose you either, pretty."
