Face to Face

The APC, having been readied is now turning out of the Wollem National Park parking lot, full to overflowing with the gear of the six team members, plus the added gear and bodies of the five Antyrii scouts that have joined them. It is going to be a very cramped ride.

Saburo says, "Are we heading straight to Sydney?"

Saburo sets his helmet on the floor between his feet, putting his gloves inside it for now.

Geneviev puts the APC in gear and heads out onto the road. She's quite attentive to her driving, which she does by exceeding the posted speed limit by 30-40 kph; to well within the safe operating limits of the loaded vehicle. Several uncomfortable hours later, they reach the outskirts of Sydney.

By the end of the ride the Antyrii scouts are looking quite uncomfortable. They seem to be eager to get out of the APC as quickly as they can. Several of them are looking a little green. Renthal isn't looking great, either, but he seems to be doing a little better than the rest of the elves. He barely opens his eyes once during the entire trip, however.

Saburo pokes his head up front. "Let's find a good location to park. Somewhere near the core, close to a police precinct. These elves are looking ill. I think they want to get out and walk around soon."

Geneviev nods to Saburo and heads towards the center of the city, looking around for a good place to park. "How long until the next satellite pass? Still several hours, right?"

Saburo says, "We can teach them a few urban ambush tricks while we're locating what we need to move into Melbourne."

Kavanaugh, after a quick consultation with his computer, nods to Geneviev. "About three hours."

Saburo shuffles around to access his backpack, and pulls out the maps of Sydney he acquired when the group passed through the first time.

With help from Saburo's map, Geneviev navigates to the closest precinct and pulls up to the door to the underground parking garage, which appears to be closed.

Dr_Chong says, "Want me to take a look at the door?"

Saburo says, "I'll come with you."

Saburo leaves his helmet and gloves on the floor, but draws one of the large Japanese sub machine guns from the holster on his backpack. He moves to the door.

Dr_Chong walks cautiously to the door and examines it.

Saburo walks around, checking the area to make sure it's clear of hostiles, before he joins the doctor at the door.

Geneviev watches from the running APC, ready to drive it through the door if they get it open.

Saburo says, "You know how to hotwire one of these, Doctor Chong?"

Dr_Chong examines the keypad, "Let me see."

Saburo says, "Do you need me to pull my toolkit out? "

Dr_Chong says, "I think I have what I need here."

Dr_Chong leans close to the keypad, and begins to press buttons while fiddling with the thumb pad. "This may take me a few minutes, this one is can be rather tricky," and with that the keypad beeps and the door opens.

Saburo blinks in surprise. "You didn't even have to open the panels up... Maybe I should have learned how to use a cyberdeck better." Saburo chuckles and moves out of the way.

Dr_Chong says, "I logged in as a high ranking officer, and have the security codes stored in my deck now. I should be able to use these codes to access most of the city."

Saburo says, "Excellent, that will make searching the databases inside much easier."

Geneviev waits for the two to clear the driveway and then rolls through and stops just beyond the door. She looks back at the passengers. "It'll just be a couple more minutes."

The Antyrii scouts nod their excitement at having only a few more minutes in this torturous contraption before they are allowed out of it. Renthal just keeps his eyes closed and head lowered. His only answer is a grunt.

Saburo motions politely for the doctor to preceed him through the garage door.

Bethpage nods silently to Gene, trying not to fidget. I'm just an attack dog, still on its leash... let me loose when it's time to bite.

Dr_Chong enters the garage looking around warily.

Saburo follows the APC down into the parkade, then walks around to make sure it's clear of squaters, or hostile security bots...

Geneviev pulls the APC into a free stall and then backs it out again, facing the door.

Geneviev shuts it down and climbs out of her seat. "Alright...pile out."

Saburo walks back to the APC. "Nothing else moving down here," he reports over the team's communicators.

Inside the parking garage is quiet and utterly empty. There is not a vehicle in sight. No police cruisers, no support vehicles. No SWAT vehicles. Nothing but empty space.

Pitch_Black climbs silently out of the APC, checking the action on his rifle. "Maybe they went for a donut run."

Saburo says, "Hai. Looks like they were all out in the streets when they dropped. We're not after police vehicles anyway."

Geneviev's brow furrows. "Donut run?"

Pitch_Black says, "Yeah. It's a colloquialism. They have those where you're from, right?"

As soon as the way is clear the Antyrii pile out the door as quickly as they can and start to mill about, stretching their legs and talking quitely amongst themselves. Renthal is the last out. He walks a few paces then sits down with his back against the wall. He seems to be gathering himself.

Bethpage follows Pitch's debarkation within seconds, eager to be out of the vehicle. She keeps an eye on Renthal and the Antyrii.

Saburo says, "Cops like to eat donuts, Gene. Or so they say. I've never spent much time around the police myself. "

Geneviev ohhs. "It's likely they were out trying to keep the riots from getting too out of control."

Bethpage wonders what Renthal's up to-- relaxation after the traumatic ride, or something more sinister? Maybe he's taking a moment to remember whose side he's on. Whichever that actually is. Or communicating with the bad guys, elf-style. I wonder if I should interrupt, for kindness or damage control...

Dr_Chong approaches Renthal quietly, to see if he looks up or if he wishes to remain indisturbed.

Renthal looks up when Doctor Chong nears and raises his eyebrow in question.

Bethpage smiles a tiny bit. Or I could let the good doctor do it. Good old man.

Saburo says, "Well, lets see what we can find upstairs, so we can get ourselves a boat."

Dr_Chong says, "I had an idea. Do any of your men possess knowledge of herbs from your homeland? I thought perhaps it would be good if I knew if any of my herbal remedies would be effective on your people."

Saburo walks around looking for a door leading upstairs. He waits at it, checking to see if it too is locked.

Renthal nods, "Yes, Doctor they do, and they'll be happy to help you, but they need your language first. It will take a few minutes of preparation, but I can give them your language when I'm done. Then you'll be able to communicate with them."

Dr_Chong nods his head and bows slightly to Renthal as an equal, "Thank you."

Geneviev looks over at Renthal. "What do you mean, 'give them our language'?"

Renthal looks over at Geneviev. "I have the ability to 'lend' them your language, for a short time."

Saburo frowns at the old fashioned lock, and sets his Model 100 SCK to single shots. He backs up from the door.

Bethpage eyes the Antyrii and their loaner Dowrani. "How wonderful."

Dr_Chong moves to stand where he is out of the way but still has a close view of what Renthal does next.

Geneviev hmphs in surprise. "Neat." She looks over at Saburo. "You think we'll find a boat upstairs?"

Pitch_Black calls up to Saburo, "Sab, you know if that's deadbolted you're just going to waste a bullet."

Saburo says, "No, but we'll be able to find out who the drug runners in Sydney are, hopefully."

Saburo says, "You know how to pick these?"

Bethpage blinks at Saburo.

Geneviev says, "I thought we were going to drive to Melbourne and pick a boat up there."

Saburo says, "We don't have many doors like this in Japan anymore."

Dr_Chong nods his head and examines the lock pulling out a small lockpick set.

Saburo says, "We need a boat to get into Melbourne from the south. If we drive there, we may run into Dowrani scouts."

Dr_Chong fiddles with the lock, trying different picks until with a click, it opens up.

Renthal stands up and goes to each of the five scouts, touching them lightly on the forehead. He says a single word when he touches them. The first Antyrii that he touches, finally able to speak to the group, blurts out. "Why do they have such a big place to keep these contraptions," he motions at the APC. "When they don't have any?"

Dr_Chong addresses Renthal again, "If it is not much trouble to ask, do you think you might be able to do that language lending to lend your language to me temporarily?"

Saburo smirks. "Thank you again, Doctor. What's the login and password to access the electronic systems?"

Renthal blinks at Doctor Chong. "Which one?"

Pitch_Black says, "The ones they had were out on the streets in use when the Dowrani did... whatever they did."

Dr_Chong says, "As many as would be possible in a reasonable time. I take it you have more than one language?"

The scout nods at Pitch Black. "Ahh."

Renthal nods. "I can try, in a little while. I've not done this to a human before."

Dr_Chong hands his deck to Saburo and shows him the security code so that he can transfer it to his deck.

Geneviev walks over to join Dr. Chong. "Do you think you'll be able to move them from your wetware to a more permanent form while you're under this...spell?"

Bethpage watches Renthal and the Doctor with great interest. She subvocalizes to the group, You sure you want to let him touch your brain, Doc?

Dr_Chong says, "I will see what I can transfer to my deck, but with my linguistic skill, I am hoping to retain some knowledge even after the effect wears off. I have been listening carefully when they speak their languages so far, and have been learning what I can on my own."

Saburo plugs his deck in, and gets the info. "Thanks Doctor. Take care of the elves, I'll go upstairs and see what I can find in the police files.

Dr_Chong nods to Saburo, "Stay safe."

Saburo opens the door and heads upstairs, his SMG still in his hand. He moves out of sight cautiously, and the door slides shut again with a faint click.

Geneviev nods to Dr. Chong. "I might be useful in this area, too. My brain is...different. And it would be good to be able to speak a language that matches my appearance."

Dr_Chong says, "I am willing to be the guinea pig first, perhaps if it all goes well?"

Dr_Chong looks slightly stubborn about wanting to go first, out of his normal character.

Geneviev nods quietly and glances at Bethpage and Pitch Black, fairly certain they'll kill Renthal if it doesn't go well for Dr. Chong.

Geneviev glances at the door that Saburo just went through and glances to the others. "I'm going to go back him up." She follows quickly to the door and passes through it, listening for the direction that Saburo took.

Geneviev subvocalizes, "Behind you, Saburo-san."

Saburo is moving through the first level of the station, looking to see what was left behind, and for directions to the armoury and central control stations.

Saburo replies on the comms, "Doesn't look like anyone is here. I'm not being all that quiet. The Armoury is on the fourth floor, and the offices and control are on the third. These first two floors look like booking and holding cells. Meet you at the stairs?"

Geneviev says, "Certainly. I'll be there in moments."

Saburo waits by the stairs. He finds the door unlocked. He opens it, and peeks into the stairwell. He waits for Genevieve before going up, though.

Geneviev moves to the stairway quickly, only glancing around to make sure everything is indeed quiet. She nods to Saburo when she arrives.

Saburo nods, and moves up the stairs, covering Gene.

Geneviev covers Saburo in turn, following this routine like it was second nature until they get to the third floor.

Saburo stops on the third floor stairwell, glancing above to make sure it's clear. He opens the door, and motions with a nod of his head for Gene to go through.

Saburo says on the comm, "Let's check it out, see if we can unlock the armoury from down here."

Geneviev slips through and checks the room and finding it clear. "It's quiet..."

Saburo comes in behind Gene, looking into the offices of the high ranking officers, all eerily silent and empty. They quickly find the file room, where the ROM decks are stored. A large desk in the middle of the room holds several computers. One says 'Catalogue' on the side of it.

Saburo sets his SMG down on the table, and takes his backback off, setting it beside him. He sits down at the catalogue computer, and plugs the extra lead from his cyberdeck into it. He uses Chong's codes to log on.

Geneviev watches for a moment and then looks around the room. "I'm glad one of us knows computers. Otherwise this would've been a wasted walk."

The computer blips at Saburo. ##Welcome, Chief Markham.##

Saburo smiles. "See, that was easy... now, lets see what we can find..." Saburo searches for the commands to open and close lockdowned areas of the station, before he tackles the catalogue of casefiles.

The computer makes another blip. This blip sounds unhappy. ##No Results Found. Search again?##

Saburo says, "Yes, it is a useful skill. I think I orgininally got the cyberdeck interface implant so I could pose as a business man. My memory of the time is a little fuzzy. But I've found it extremely useful for finding information on public networks and databases."

Saburo frowns. "Well, I can't open the armoury from this computer. We'll try Markam's office next." Saburo starts searching through the casefile catalogue, seeing what searches on drug smuggling and organized crime bring up.

Saburo says, "Let's see who the bad boys in Sydney were..."

The computer makes the "happy" sound again. ##16 Casefiles found, displaying results.## A list of case files appears on screen. All of them begin with the sequence NAR, HOM or OCU.

Saburo nods, and gets up to locate the ROM decks with those labels....

Saburo says, "Let's look at the Organized Crime Unit first...."

Saburo says, "We're in luck, Gene. One of these files is several years old, but the other looks like it's dated... just before the outbreak started. "

Geneviev stands watching, feeling a little out of place, but that's probably because this place is relatively mundane and normal.

Saburo takes the ROM decks back to the desk, and slots them into one of the computers. He checks out the most recent one first.

Geneviev smiles. "That's good. It isn't likely to list the type of assets, though, right?"

Saburo says, "No, but if we're lucky, the police have some addresses for their operations...."

Geneviev says, "If all else fails, we could just go pier to pier."

Saburo says, "I'm sure the police or coast card have some fast boats down at the marina, but they won't likely be rigged up to avoid sattelite notice. And that seems to be a concern with most of you."

Saburo says, "Well well..."

Geneviev says, "What is it?"

Saburo says, "Looks like they caught a drug smuggling operation in the final days. Here's a full list of assets, at least what the cops could find... They have one of their smuggling boats that they captured as part of their undercover investigation... and it's in lock-down at the police marina. Or, at least, that's where the police left it. "

Saburo says, "Not that I expect the elves have been joyriding on powerboats..."

Geneviev nods. "Well...that's a good start, then. Shall we find a couple more before we leave?"

Saburo notes the addresses the police had for the organized crime organization, then unplugs his cyberdeck. "Let's find the chief's office and see if we can unlock the armoury from there."

Saburo says, "Maybe that's a good idea... Since we're here"

Geneviev nods.

Saburo sits back down and searches the other file as well, as a backup plan.

Saburo is able to find a couple more boats that the police have impounded in the last year, all of which are listed as being in lockdown at the police marina, most recently.

Saburo writes down the boat names and registration numbers. "Excellent, here's half a dozen more they have impounded at the same location."

Saburo and Gene leave the case file room, and search around for Chief Markham's office.

Saburo sits down at Markham's computer, and then notices a set of keys sitting carelessly on the desk before he has a chance to log on. "Oh what luck. Check it out, they're right here." The tag on the keychain clearly reads 'Armoury'

Saburo smiles at Geneviev, and tosses her the keychain.

Saburo says, "Let's head upstairs and see what they left behind for us. I've a feeling it won't be much, since there aren't any vehicles here either."

Kavanaugh frowns sligthly, and clicks on the radio. "Gene, Saburo... be careful, if the armory keys were that easy to find, the armory might be boobytrapped, to catch anyone who doesn't know better." He glances to the others. "Okay, it was an old, dirty trick we used to do in la Legion when we had to vacate positions. Made some nice fireballs that way...."

Saburo replies on the communicator, "Thanks for the warning. We have a list of half a dozen suitable boats locked up in the police marina."

Bethpage says over the com, "Great! Good job, folks."

Saburo and Geneviev head back to the stairwell, and leapfrog cautiously up it to the fourth floor landing. Saburo checks the door carefully, but it opens without any explosions... They move down the hallway towards the Armoury, and Saburo stops several meters away from the door. He checks it out carefully with his optics, even though they probably wouldn't indicate any traps.

The fourth floor of the building is devoted to the armoury. Immediately upon stepping in the door, Saburo and Geneviev are greeted with an empty security station, beyond which lies a large steel case which houses weapons and armour. Or did, at some point. It is empty now.

Geneviev frowns. "So much for that idea."

Saburo says, "Well, that was worse than I thought it would be.. No wonder he left his keys behind."

Saburo shrugs. "Lets head back down and make sure the elves haven't done anything bad to the good doctor. What was that they were talking about casting spells for?"

Renthal again takes time to ready himself, though it's unclear what, if anything, he's doing. He's not dancing around and chanting or anything like that. Looks almost as though he's just relaxing his body. Finally, though, he walks up to Doctor Chong and reaches his hand forward to touch him. He stops briefly just before he makes contact, just so he doesn't spook the Doctor.

Dr_Chong stands motionless, afraid any movement might disrupt Renthal's process.

Kavanaugh watches the process curiously, and oddly not at all bothered by any sort of quasi-religious implications.

Renthal touches the fingers of his right hand to Doctor Chong's forehead and speaks that word again.

Bethpage watches Renthal nervously, trying not to show it. Now would be a good time to turn his coat, with the humans at a serious numerical disadvantage, if the elf feels like it.

Pitch_Black, for his part, isn't worried. He's already gauged the distance between him and the elf, and exactly how long it will take to get there and drop Renthal. He just watches carefully to see if it becomes necessary.

Dr_Chong says, "Hmmm. That was.. an interesting feeling."

Bethpage eyes Dr. Chong worriedly. "Did it hurt? Are you okay?"

Dr_Chong says, "I'm okay. It didn't hurt, but felt very.. strange."

Renthal nods at Doctor Chong and says, in a language the other recognise as Antyrii. "You can speak Antyrii now, for a time. Six to eight hours, perhaps."

Bethpage says, "Does it work, Doc? What'd he say?""

Dr_Chong replies in the same language, "Thank you this is strange, but I will adapt."

Dr_Chong speaks in English, "He said it will last about 6-8 hours."

Renthal nods and says in English. "It simply takes some time to get used to."

Kavanaugh blinks. "Fascinating!" he murmurs. "The curse of Babel can be... er, bypassed."

Bethpage twitches when alien words come out of the Doc's mouth. She nods to him, uneasy. Fingers stirring up your brain... gah.

Pitch_Black hms. He leans back against the wall and adjusts the straps keeping his elbowpads on. Just so long as that's all he put in there.

Bethpage knows how unlikely it is that Renthal would volunteer the... service... to anyone who hasn't asked, but finds herself wanting to stay far away from any possibility of touching him. Luckily, she can almost guarantee to herself that that's exactly what he'd want her to do. The ensuing dilemma of staying away, versus being contrary, makes her stay put.

Saburo opens the door into the parkade, and steps through it, Geneviev close behind him. He shrugs his backpack off and leans it against a support pillar, sliding the 100 SCK back into it's holster on the back of his pack, and strapping it in. He takes out a cigarette and lights it, taking a deep drag.

Bethpage waves lightly at Sab and Gene. "Welcome back, guys. Are we ready to blow this place and go boating?"

Saburo nods. "The armoury was as empty as this parkade. I got a list of boats that might do us, and the address of the police marina, down in the harbour."

Dr_Chong says, "The language 'lending' seems to have been a success."

Saburo says, "Do we want to teach these elves some urban combat tricks before we go? Or should we just get to Melbourne quickly?"

Kavanaugh nods, straightening. "We're good to go, I think. Let's head there. Been a good while since I did some boat-driving. This should be good...."

Saburo blinks slowly at Doctor Chong.

Dr_Chong says in another language, "These powers begin to frighten me a little."

Bethpage says, "I guess we saddle back up, then... uh, teach the elves..." She switches to subvocals, "Teach them how to kill us better in the city? Are you sure?"

The elves pile back into the car. They're not in nearly as big a rush to get back in as they were to get out of it. Renthal loads in last.

Saburo nods to Beth. "Good point. Best to get there quickly. Shooting people from windows can't be all that different than ambushing from the trees anyway."

Pitch_Black says, "We won't have time to do more than explain why tin cans in a windowsill should be avoided, anyway."

Bethpage flinches when the Doc speaks, and nods to her team as they return to the vehicle.

Saburo stores his backpack with his helmet, and climbs into the front.

Pitch_Black climbs in last, giving the place one last look over his shoulder before he piles in.

Saburo calls out to the elves, "Don't worry, you'll probably be able to see the sky above you once we're on the ocean!"

Kavanaugh clambers into the driver's seat, and fires up the engine. "Yarnchaser, keep an eye on the oil pressure, would you? Thanks....'

The group pulls out of the police station and back onto the streets, heading off towards the marina. Luckily the marina is close and Chief Markham's code works to get them inside here too. The marina appears to be all but untouched. There are no police vehicles in site, but a dozen other vehicles in various stages of investigation are littered around.

Pitch_Black murmurs, "Great. We can help ourselves to some coke on the way through."

Kavanaugh looks over the boats. "Well! None of them look like Watersnake patrol boats, but I'm sure they'll do nicely. Did you have any particular one in mind, Saburo?"

Saburo gets out and walks around the docks, inspecting each boat with a critical eye. He is determined to find the best compromise between roominess, luxury, and special modifications. He checks their engines, to see if any of them have masking to reduce engine noise, or to mask their infrared signatures.

Saburo says, "Well, I'd like the most posh one, naturally, but some of you are worried about being seen, so we may have to take a smaller one, if the rest aren't rigged for silent running, Father."

Pitch_Black says, "Christ, Sab, you sound like you're looking to buy. You gonna keep this thing when we're done?"

Saburo laughs. "I could always use a new boat.. but it's a long sail back to Japan or Weston from here."

Bethpage snickers quietly at Pitch Black's comment, while the boat-savvy do their inspections... hmm. Come to think... "Pitch, I'm gonna have a look-see around here. Be right back. Don't leave without me, hate to miss the party..."

Kavanaugh says dryly, "Well, far be it from us to prefer not to be seen by anyone."

Pitch_Black grins lopsidedly, then snickers. "Right. Hey, well... let's see if we can find one with a wet bar."

Saburo grins back at Pitch. "See, now you're on my wavelength... If those damn Russians had shipped my Rolls with us, we could have been riding in style, instead of in that military truck."

Pitch_Black says, "Don't get too far, Page. Neither one of us is busty enough for lifeguard duty."

Dr_Chong mumbles something incoherent over and over, not subvocalizing for the com but not speaking clearly either.

Pitch_Black says, "Might have been a bit much to stuff in the cargo-hauler. Anyway, let's see what we can find."

Kavanaugh glances to Chong, frowning. "Doctor? Are you all right?"

Dr_Chong says, "Oh, sorry. I was just practicing counting in Antyrii."

Saburo frowns, trying to decide on the best two boats.

Bethpage laughs back to Pitch Black, but has a certain distracted look in her eyes as she hops out of the APC and heads toward the boats. She doesn't even notice the Doc's odd behavior.

Saburo says, "Pitch, you know how to drive a powerboat?"

Kavanaugh blinks to Chong. "Wish we could use you to program a translator chip...

Pitch_Black hms? "Me? Nah, I dunno from boats. I stayed the hell away from Yaumatei. Bad people live around there." The self-incriminatory potential of that statement seems lost on him.

Saburo says, "I thought you /were/ one of the bad people, Pitch."

Saburo grins, and climbs out of the boat he was scoping.

Kavanaugh says idly, "I think that says something."

Pitch_Black says, "Who, me? Heh. I'm easy. A pushover."

Saburo says, "Oh, you meant the peasants and gypsies. I got you."

Pitch_Black says, "Just don't let the boat people hear you say that. C'mon, let's see if we can figure out how to navigate one of these things."

Saburo says, "Well, the good news is there are plenty of suitable boats here. With wet bars, comfortable seats, and rigged for silent running. Even have interface jack rigs too, so you can drive hands free."

Pitch_Black says, "That's a plus. Lemme guess; the bad news is none of 'em are gonna carry all this load."

Kavanaugh hrms. "Well, can we slave two or more boats into the same control channel. If I'm jacked in and we don't do anything really outrageous I think I can guide two or three boats."

Saburo nods. "Yeah, we'd need two boats to get all of us there. Or, take one boat, and drive."

Pitch_Black nods, "Well, that'd be cool, maybe we can... yeah. 'scuse me a sec, will you?" He wanders off down the pier. "I'll be right back."

Saburo says, "I can't drive two at once. They're rigged, but it's too risky to pilot a fast boat remotely. You need to be able to respond to the waves, it's not like driving on pavement."

Kavanaugh blinks, watching Pitch go, then he looks around. "Hey, where'd... uhm. Right. Saburo, can you drive a boat? I know I can. If you can as well, that's a little better.

Geneviev shrugs. "So let's take two and not try to slave them together?"

Saburo says, "We can try it, Father... It's just risky."

Geneviev glances at Pitch as he heads off down the pier.

Pitch_Black makes his way down the pier a ways to where Page is, apparently, vandalizing someone's vehicle. He folds his arms on his chest and leans against the hull, waiting. When he doesn't get a response, he clears his throat, just loudly enough to be heard.

Pitch_Black says, "I hope you brought enough for the whole class."

Saburo says, "Well, if you can drive then we have no worries, Father. I'm a speed boat freak myself. I just didn't expect anyone else here to have experience with boats."

Bethpage jumps, then turns to grin at Pitch, fussing with her pack as she rises from a crouch. "Aw, you know me, Teach. Would I do a thing like that?" She grins. "C'mon, man. I had to look."

Kavanaugh nods. "Wasn't much call for a boat in the desert, but I've done some boating."

Saburo points out the two best ones, in his opinion, to Father Kavanaugh. "I'm thinking those two... They're already fueled up."

Pitch_Black says, "Gonna let me in on the secret, then?"

Geneviev says, "I'll start unloading the APC, then."

Saburo heads back to the APC, to start unloading the gear.

Geneviev walks back to where they parked.

Kavanaugh hmms, then moves over to them and starts looking them over with a military eye, knowing Saburo has already checked out their accomodations.

The scouts help the team unload the APC and wait to be told which boats to put the stuff in.

Dr_Chong assists Geneviev with unloading, still mumbling to himself, but trying to do it more quietly.

Bethpage gives Pitch Black a naughty-kid grin. "I found a little, yeah. Enough to keep me sane longer. I'll be good, though... just enough to keep me in good working condition. I'd even share with a friend. I don't have it that bad yet, man."

Pitch_Black says, "Is it for real?"

Saburo does his best to reassure the elven scouts that this won't be nearly as bad as the bumpy car ride, while they're helping him carry the gear down to the docks.

Bethpage smiles at Pitch Black. "Would this face lie?"

Pitch_Black says, "I think it best if I don't answer that. If you're not totally sure I don't want you taking it. We can't have you tweaking out in combat. Anyway, that's all, end of lecture. Come on, our ride's here."

Bethpage hops blithely out of the boat, and trots back to rejoin the others with Pitch Black. "Aye aye, cap'n."

Pitch_Black sighs and rubs the back of his neck, turning to head back up the pier. Man, I do sound like a teacher. I must be getting old. I need a cigarette.

When the two boats are finished being loaded full of team members and equipment, they are guided out of the marina by Saburo at the wheel of one and Kavanaugh at the wheel of another. In Saburo's boat are Father Chong, Geneviev and three scouts. Kavanaugh has Pitch Black, Bethpage, Renthal and the other two scouts.

After some consultation with maps, Saburo leads the boats out of Syndey harbour and along to coast to Melbourne. He pulls the boat into the Coast Guard Marina, which is pretty much dead centre in the docks. It has great potential as a command centre for the group. The equipment is offloaded and hauled into the building for the set-up to begin.

The elves are, once again, glad to be on solid ground. They actually look worse then they did getting out of the APC.

Towards the end of the trip, Gene finishes off a canteen and dips it into the ocean to refill it.

Kavanaugh spends much of the trip at the controls, hunched over the console with quiet, fierce intensity. Yarnchaser remains strictly in the pack, away from all that miserable water. When he comes out, he looks little wobbly.

Pitch_Black spends the trip flat on his stomach on the deck with his hood up to break up his profile, watching the shoreline through his optical scope.

Saburo shrugs at the elves, and says, "Sorry, I didn't know your people were new to sea travel as well. Sit down and rest while we unload. The coast guard building looks solid, it shouldn't rock that much."

The elves quite happily take Saburo's suggestion. One of the female elves looks at Renthal as they all sit and try to get their stomachs to calm down and says something in their language.

Bethpage stretches cheerfully when she gets out, perhaps a little more cheerfully than she really needs to, after noticing that even Renthal shares the sick look. "Hey, Doc. Do we have motion sickness pills for these poor l'il guys?"

Geneviev hooks her canteen back on her belt and starts unloading the boats.

Pitch_Black slings his gear and starts moving to help unload. He'd like to get this done as quickly as possible... the idea of getting caught in the act isn't very appealing, magic or no magic to deal with.

Bethpage moves to aid the unloading as well.

Dr_Chong moves to converse with the elves about herbs, showing them what he has in his herbal kit.

Renthal waves Doctor Chong off. "We'll be fine shortly. Just give us a few moments to gather ourselves."

Kavanaugh steps out of the boat, stretching a bit and looking moderately invigorated. Yarnchaser, meanwhile, weaves his way over to people who look about as sick as he feels, and plops himself down, glaring at Kavanaugh.

The female elf who expressed her resentment of human technology to her leader reaches down and scratches the cat's head.

Yarnchaser doesn't glare quite so much at Kavanaugh (who is busy trying to look apologetic to the cat) but his purr sounds a little less exuberant and more like a human going 'Urrrgh.'

Bethpage can't help the curiousity. She says over the comm, "Doc? What'd the unhappy elf girl say?"

Geneviev looks up from what she's doing at the question for a moment but resumes unloading.

Saburo breaks to have a cigarette, once the gear is safely unloaded into the coast guard command center. "What's our next step? Do we want to go out and find some elves, to lure them back into the city after us? If we kill a few, are they likely to send a war party into the city after us, Renthal?"

Dr_Chong says over the comm, "She was expressing her dislike of human technology."

Dr_Chong says over the comm, "To put it, uh, mildly."

Setting up the base is a very quick process, as all of the cases that the team got from the Russians are packed to make setting us and quick and easy as possible. Within an hour the team has a new base of operations. They are now, for lack of a better title.. The Coast Guard.

Bethpage sighs. "I'd picked that part up. I was hoping for the juicy details... ah well. I guess I'll live if I never learn to cuss in elvish."

Saburo drags on his smoke, pulling out the maps of Melbourne.

Saburo says, "How likely are we to succeed on sneaking up on them and ambushing them silently in the woods?"

Geneviev sits one one of the boxes. "I like the idea of luring them back to the city...make them run the gauntlet."

Dr_Chong says, "Perhaps we could do a test with Renthal's cooperation to see if we can be detected approaching him?"

Renthal gives Saburo a seriously look, "About as much chance as sneaking up on a wild cat in his own domain."

Pitch_Black says, "Not very, Sab. They're elves. No point in taking them on in their own turf. Best to make them come to us."

Saburo nods to Geneviev. "That was what I was thinking... Here, we have the advantage over them."

Geneviev nods. "One shot, two kills." She smiles.

Saburo says, "Excellent. Let's find some good potential streets to set up choke points and snipers."

Pitch_Black says, "There are only a few of us. It's going to get real dynamic real quick."

Bethpage nods to herself, and says to Renthal, "How easy was it for you to find me, when you ran across me in the woods? Be honest, we're fighting together." She tries to make her voice as nonconfrontational as possible, for a change.

Saburo says, "How do we let them know they missed some humans in the city? Should I find a bike and ride out looking for them?"

Pitch_Black says, "Shame we don't have any fireworks."

Saburo says, "I have grenades.. but I'd hate to waste them Pitch."

Renthal smiles at Bethpage. "Let's just say that you humans make a great deal of noise, even when you don't think you are. It was laughably easy to find you."

Pitch_Black says, "I wouldn't waste them on that. We'll have to find something a little less valuable to expend for a diversion."

Dr_Chong says, "We need to balance alerting them to our presence with alerting others watching the island to our presence."

Pitch_Black says, "Suppose we could ride out and tag one, hope the noise draws others."

Geneviev looks over at Renthal. "Were you aware of me, though?"

Renthal nods at Geneviev. "But there's only one of me, and your compatriot here made it necessary for me to babysit her back to the camp, so I couldn't come and get you."

Bethpage tries to keep the pleasant half-smile on her face after Renthal's response. Well frag you too, pointy. "Thanks for the honesty," she says out loud.

The elf woman that was speaking to Renthal earlier, Elwyn, looks over at Pitch Black. "May I make a suggestion, Sir?"

Geneviev shrugs.

Pitch_Black says, "Be my guest."

Renthal shrugs at Bethpage. "You asked."

Elwyn says, "Let the Antyrii be your bait. They're not going to be happy to find us here and I'm certain that they will pursue us if they see us."

Pitch_Black quirks a brow. "You sure you're comfortable doing that?"

Saburo nods. "That's actually a very good idea."

Elwyn smiles at Pitch. "Yes, of course. That is what we do."

Geneviev purses her lips and nods. "Let me go with them. I think I can kill one or two before they get back here."

Pitch_Black says, "All right then... come here and look at this map, Elwyn, we'll set it up."

Kavanaugh hrms. "Thank you, madam." He turns to Renthal. "Actually, I have a question about the weapon they used to wipe out this land, if you can answer it. Would these suits protect us from it?"

Dr_Chong looks skeptical with the suggestion, but nods his head in agreement.

Saburo says, "I was thinking we should set you up to shoot arrows at them from windows. But we need at least two or three people to get their attention."

Bethpage says to Renthal, "Yeah, and I really did want the honesty. It'd just be easier to believe you if you didn't try so hard to be an asshole the rest of the time-- as long as we're being frank." She smiles with better cheer, and nods approvingly at Elwyn. "I like her."

Renthal shakes his head, "I don't know. Vult's Hands are the ones that created that and they did it in secret. I was banished long before it was unveiled."

Geneviev glances quietly at Renthal. "Do you know what he looks like?"

Kavanaugh nods to Renthal, mentally estimating what the elf's life expectancy around Page is going to be in the near future.

Renthal looks back at Bethpage. "Being an ass is not my intention. I am blunt and I have been always. I think you'll find that my people are all 'assholes' in your estimation."

Pitch_Black says, "Actually, my estimation's based on the fact that they wiped out a couple million people in the blink of an eye. That's why they're all assholes."

Renthal nods at Geneviev, "Yes. I know what Decepi looks like. However, the likelyhood of you seeing him is terribly slim. He's not been seen in this world for some time. He communicates to Lakusta through magic."

Renthal smiles a little at Pitch. "They feel the same way about your people, for much the same reason."

Dr_Chong says, "I do not know what role I can best serve in an ambush, but my eyes are modified to see detail at great distances, and I feel I should be near to where the majority is stationed in case of injuries."

Pitch_Black says, "Hey, good for them. We'll see who's left when it's done."

Geneviev frowns. "Where is he if he's not here?"

Saburo says, "We can use you as a spotter then, Doctor. Keep your head down when the shooting starts."

Pitch_Black says, "Then see if you can find a perch on top of this place, Doc. And take my Tactical Sensor Rig, too, it'll just be weight to me, but you can use it to spot for us. If wounded start coming in, come on back down."

Saburo says, "Are we going to leave someone here at the command center?"

Renthal says, "If Lakusta is not here, Alamsech will be."

Dr_Chong says, "Just as long as I am near enough to help if I am needed."

Geneviev says, "No. Vult. Where is he?"

Renthal says, "No one knows where he is, except perhaps his Hands."

Pitch_Black says, "Saburo, finish helping Elwyn get this thing plotted out, I'm gonna take Doc upstairs and show him how to run the Rig."

Saburo takes out his extra ammo clips, and his silencers. He attaches the silencers to his small SMGs and his two pistols.

Bethpage says, "Where do we want me, guys? I'm a good shot, but all I have is the Koroshi."

Saburo nods to Pitch. "You got it." He goes to consult with Elwyn, looking over the maps, carefully selecting ambush points that the elves would be likely to move through when coming into the city.

Pitch_Black says, "Keep yourself at midrange, Page. And stay fluid. Urban combat sucks."

Geneviev chews her lip. "Saburo. Can I have a moment of your time?"

Saburo hands Page the 4 extra powerclips for his own Koroshi. "Take these, you will need them more than I will."

Kavanaugh murmurs, "Ain't that the truth...."

Bethpage nods cheerfully. "Oh.. all right, Saburo. Thank you." She smiles at him, a 'this will be fun' attitude leaking out into her eyes.

Geneviev waits patiently for Saburo.

Saburo has the same look in his eyes...

Saburo gets up and walks over into an empty office, to talk to Gene.

Saburo leans against the desk, and looks up at Gene.

Geneviev closes the door. "Saburo-san. I need to tell you something about myself, for your safety."

Saburo says, "For my safety? Have I angered you, Geneviev?"

Geneviev shakes her head. "No. Not at all." She leans against the door. "I have a special condition that you should be aware of."

Saburo tilts his head, looking her over. He keeps his hands firmly on the desk he's leaning against, however.

Saburo nods slowly. "Go on..."

Geneviev says, "Well...if I am rendered what you might call unconcious...in combat or otherwise...I don't exactly stop moving or reacting. I just...fall back on instinct...you could say."

Saburo says, "Do you have an Override Chip?"

Saburo says, "What are your instincts? Do you go into a beserking rage?"

Geneviev shakes her head. "No. I take the quickest path back to a 'safe' location, engaging any non-friendlies that block my path. If there are non-friendlies at my safe location, I'll have to look for another."

Saburo nods and smiles. "Well, that is good to know. I don't see how that could be a danger to us, however. I'm familiar with that technology." He pushes off the desk, and reaches up to tap the back of his head with his left forefinger.

Saburo says, "I'll be honest, I have an Incapacity Override Chip slotted myself, Gene."

Saburo says, "I usually use it to keep fighting if something goes wrong during a fight.. But I switched it from Fight to Flight near the beginning of the mission. Just in case."

Geneviev says, "Well...if you try to interact with me and for some reason I interpret it as hostile, it could temporarily recategorize you."

Saburo says, "Ah, yes... So it will be obvious, if you turn and run... and we shouldn't chase after you.""

Geneviev nods. "I just don't want anybody hurt that I think shouldn't be."

Saburo says, "I suppose the same goes for me... I'm used to working alone, except in my new role with Murasaki Corporate Security.. and in those cases, I've never used the Override chip. "

Saburo nods. "Do you want me to say anything to the others? Or just wait, and warn them in case it happens?

Geneviev nods. "Mine isn't a removable chip and I can't change its settings."

Saburo nods. "If we had more time, we might be able to locate a facility to fix that... But I don't think the field technician kit I brought for fixing cybernetics can handle it. It's probably in your head. Tell you what, if we get out of this alive, come to Nagoya, and I will have the best Murasaki doctors fix that for you, so you can switch it off."

Saburo says, "If it's possible... they can do it."

Geneviev blinks. "You trust these doctors? I'm rather nervous about letting people in my head."

Saburo says, "I hadn't really considered the possibility that my override would be a danger to the team, to be honest. I just thought enough to switch it off berserker attack...."

Saburo says, "Well, I didn't use to trust them.. Murasaki did a lot of things to my head a few years ago. But I'm on the board of directors now, and the new CEO is my young wife. The ethics have improved dramatically since she took over the corporation from her late father."

Saburo says, "We don't let them do experiments on unwilling subjects any longer."

Geneviev nods. "So...I suppose my answer is to not tell them unless the need arises. It is one of my less charming 'features'."

Saburo nods. "I understand... Thank you for letting me know. You do the same for me. If I turn around and start running, warn them not to chase after me. We'll watch each others backs, in the off chance that it comes into play."

Saburo strokes his chin thoughtfully. "I won't run and hide if I'm conscious and in control. I may dive for cover once in a blue moon, but it's not my style to turn and flee. If I'm fleeing, it's my override chip."

Geneviev grins. "I'm the same. Unless I'm just seriously overmatched. Might take me a little bit to realize that."

Saburo says, "I think those elves have more to worry about than us right now. They're far more likely to underestimate us. They're used to killing women and children, as we've seen, not in fighting professionals. Let's get back out there, before they think I've fallen back into my usual lecherous ways..."

Saburo says, "You look mighty fine with that new look, Gene."

Saburo grins.

Geneviev blinks and glances at herself. "Oh...with the elven features?"

Saburo says, "Indeed... I expect my chances of getting one of them into bed are slim and none, however. But I can dream."

Saburo steps away from the desk, and gives Geneviev a thoughtful, but admiring, look.

Geneviev's brow furrows a bit. "Yes...but I don't see what that has to do with..." She blinks and her cheeks take on a slightly blue caste. "I...uh...well...we should go and finish preparing."

Saburo says, "Yes, let's get back to work. Oh, when the smoke clears after the ambush, keep your distance. Sometimes I get flashbacks and the shakes after a fight."

Saburo reaches out to open the door, leaving it at that.

Geneviev walks back from the office ahead of Saburo, glancing at the others.

A few minutes later, Saburo comes back out of the office, looking thoughtful. He picks his backpack up, slings it on, and picks up his assault rifle. He still has a strange look on his face, but he doesn't say anything.

Kavanaugh makes little or no notice of Gene and Saburo, concentrating on setting up his ambush position. "Now, try to keep it down, Yarnchaser, if they hear you, it'll be problems..."

Over the course of the next day, preparations for the ambush are made by the team. Choke points are found and set up and all other preparations are made. Eventually, the Elven Scouts are sent out with Geneviev to try to rouse the Dowrani into action. It is while they are out that they see a young Dowrani woman, apparently one of their own scouts, out at the edge of the city. The woman takes a shot at them with her bow, but the arrow lands 40 feet from them. She takes off into the woods, and Geneviev and the Elves wait. Eventually their efforts are rewarded, as a group of armed elves arrives at the edge of the forest. They begin to lead this group back into the choke points where the team is poised and waiting.

However, it seems they aren't quite willing to come into the city yet. In fact, only a single elf follows them back into the choke point, where he stops, standing in the middle of the road with a bow in one hand. There are arrow in a quiver on his back, but none nocked to the bow, or in his other hand.

Pitch_Black is finishing one last cigarette when he sees the war party entering the city. He spits it out, tucking his long ponytail back into his armor's helmet ring and pulling his hood up over his head. He picks up his rifle, and squints into his optical scope. He blinks, murmuring into his comlink, "Hey... isn't that...?"

Saburo blinks, recognizing the elf. "That's the girls father. Want me to parley with him? Or shoot him?"

Kavanaugh subvocs, "It is." He fidgets with his SMG, not taking a shot at all yet, albeit he's very tempted to. O Lord, lead me not into temptation. I'll find it on my own well enough, thanks.

Saburo zooms in his telescopic vision, watching Ansrellion, drawing a bead on him from his perch in a third story window.

Geneviev subvocalizes. "Don't touch him, I think...or let one of his arrows hit you." She has her needler at the ready, waiting behind one of the corners.

Pitch_Black says, "I can drop him from here, guys, I'm staring at his noggin. Wanna let Renthal have a go at it?"

Saburo says over the comms, "What's he doing? He can't be that arrogant to just walk in alone to kill the elves they saw..."

Geneviev says, "And only Doctor Chong or Renthal will be able to speak with him."

Bethpage whispers a soft curse into her comm, wishing she could see.

Ansrellion touches a hand to his throat and says, in a voice loud enough for all to hear. "We've come to negotiate."

Kavanaugh subvocs, "They might believe it's an ambush, and he's gambling we don't want to whack him bad enough to give away our position."

Pitch_Black says, "Doc's more important where he is right now. It'll have to be Renthal. Doc, keep your eye on the Tac rig... let us know ASAP if anything funky pops up. We could be playing into a feint here."

Saburo says, "I have a lock of his daughter's hair still."

Kavanaugh blinks. "Or he's here to negotiate. Or something."

Pitch_Black says, "Yeah, I believe that. And I'm Genghis Khan. Keep your eyes on him, but let Renthal hear him out."

Geneviev says, "We could always go to the edge of the city and mow the rest of them down."

Saburo moves away from the window, and moves as quietly as he can down the stairs. He gets onto the main floor, and sets his assault rifle down. He approaches the windows here carefully, to re-establish a visual on the elven warlord.

Bethpage bites her lip, hating the inactivity... no, there is something she can do. She says quietly to Renthal, "Ansrellion has come forward and says he is here to negotiate, Renthal. We... need you."

Pitch_Black keeps his sight firmly on the elf's head, though he occasionally closes that eye to get a wider-angle view. He still isn't convinced this isn't a feint.

Saburo says on the comms, "I'd go out and talk to him myself, but we don't want to tip our hand. They haven't seen us humans, yet. But..."

Renthal nods and Page and steps out into the street, into view of Ansrellion. He also amplifies his voice. "Well?"

Saburo says, "He did shout out in english, which troubles me. Maybe they know we're here."

Bethpage says over the comm, "I told Ren- eh. You see him."

Saburo says, "I see him."

Pitch_Black says, "I don't like this at all."

Kavanaugh fidgets, but only a little, keeping his SMG ready.

Ansrellion snarls and quicker than anyone can react has nocked an arrow and pulled the bow, pointed directly at Renthal. "I should have known. You always did like the humans. I'm surprised you're not living with them, settled nicely into a comfortable life with one of their women and an abomination child." He looks around. "I don't wish to speak to the traitor. I'm here to negotiate with humans, not with dogs."

Saburo moves quietly to the doorway of the building he's in. He slowly shrugs his backpack off, and unslings his Koroshi laser carbine, to get them out of the way. He sets them down, then moves back to the nearest window to watch and listen.

Kavanaugh subvocs, "That hardly sounds like a good start to negotiations."

Geneviev frowns. "Who should talk to him? If he's still carrying the disease...it is possibly less likely to affect me as quickly."

Pitch_Black says, "See how Renthal takes this. Saburo, we got you covered if it becomes necessary to talk to this daisy-eater."

Bethpage crosses mental fingers. I can either keep assuming he's going to doublecross us, and thus nothing he does now is reliable, including injury... or I can suck up the ego and treat him like a real teammate. Damn it... I have to help him if that gets ugly. I have to. He could be telling us the truth.

Saburo climbs out of the window on hearing Ansrellion's words, and starts walking up the street towards the pair of Dowrani, from behind Ansrellion. He slides his pistol back into it's holster, and reaches up to grip the hilt of his katana. "Ansrellion." he says firmly, though he doesn't shout.

Renthal actually laughs at this, "Ansrellion, you should know better by now. You are with Those Who Watch as well. This is what we do. We cooperate with these humans, to make them more vulnerable."

Geneviev shakes her head and subvocalizes, "A warning would've been good." She sights her needler on Ansrellion.

Kavanaugh thinks, Interesting way of volunteering Saburo, as he keeps back from the first-floor window that is his nest. He glances to the side to make sure Yarnchaser is okay. When he looks back, Saburo is walking out into the street. Why do I think that there should be music by Ennio Morricone here?

Pitch_Black says, "More vulnerable? I sincerely hope he's lying to get on that guy's good side."

Saburo unties the lock of Miiryn's hair from the hilt of his Katana. It's a little clumsy with his gloves on, and he finally gives it a tug, ripping it the rest of the way off.

Renthal continues. "For example, right at the moment, I know every position that they are in. Call off the warriors and I'll tell you where they are. Here.. I'll give you one for free." He points up at a window, where the team knows damned well no one is. "There's a sniper up there."

Kavanaugh says, "He knows we can hear him, Pitch. He wouldn't be that inutterably stupid.""

Saburo says over the comms, "He apparently knows we're here. Watch out. Could be Renthal tipped him off, and the trap is meant to fall on us."

Pitch_Black says, "No, no, look. He's pointing at least a block away from me."

Pitch_Black says, "He hasn't dimed us out... yet..."

Ansrellion looks over at Saburo and at the hair. There is a definite flash of recognition in his eyes, but he doesn't react to it other than that. "Are you ready to negotiate, human?"

Dr_Chong says over the comm, "Nothing unusual on the screens."

Saburo says, "I came here hoping to find you. I can't imagine what it is you want from me, though. Besides your daughter, alive. "

Saburo drops the lock of hair on the ground, then takes five big steps back from it. He adjusts the sheath of his katana, readying it for a samurai fast-draw.

Ansrellion shrugs, "That is of little interest to me. The only thing that interests me is getting you fil-- humans off our island."

Kavanaugh looks skyward. Lord protect us. I don't like what Saburo's idea of negotiation is. But I like what Ansrellion's idea is even less!

Pitch_Black says, "Go on, Sab. Let's hear the terms. Worst case, we don't like 'em and we cack this guy."

Saburo says, "Your island? Ah, so that is what we negotiate for? What's your offer? "

Saburo replies to Pitch, "We're on the same page. You got a bead on him already."

Geneviev subvocs, "How many of us have a bead on him? Maybe I should switch to one of his friends."

Pitch_Black says, "Read my mind, Sab. Don't worry, I got him."

Saburo says, "I'm afraid I can't offer you Miiryn unharmed... Renthal already had his fun with her during interogation."

Kavanaugh would facepalm through his helmet if he thought he could. "Let's not give him any reason to SHOOT Renthal, Saburo...." He comes up to the edge of the window, still concealed knowing he's too far for accurate fire from his SMG.

Saburo says on the comms, "He doesn't seem to care about his daughter."

Ansrellion says. "Our terms are simple. You leave this island and keep the other humans off it, forever, and we stop our spell from wiping out the other islands that we have cast it on, before it kills everyone and we don't use it again. This will be our island. You humans may have the rest of the world to do with as you like."

Ansrellion's eyes narrow at what Saburo says, and he lets the bowstring go, loosing the arrow. It flies directly at Renthal and hits him square, right under the ribs. Anyone behind Renthal can see the tip come out the other side before Renthal drops.
