Background
You know the kindly old retired cop that lives down the street? The one that helps kids with their bikes, and gets cats out of trees? Well, this isn't him.
Chin has been in the middle of way too many great, steaming piles of politics pretty much since birth. Some of his earliest memories are of the intense (but oh, so polite) discussions about which pre-kindergarden prep school he would attend. Being the third son allowed him to avoid the worst of the clashes, and he learned much about human nature by observing the machinations of the family.
Members of his (extended) family are connected politically, but split about 60/40 on the democracy/China issue some time in the late 1950's. He was never really interested in politics, and he's been able to stay out of that arena for the most part. Occasionally he's "enlisted" to be the "hard working public servant" for some relative, but that's about it.
Working his way from "beat cop" to detective was straight-forward, without significant interference from the family. He wanted to remain a detective, but was pressured to "move up" in the force. That didn't go very well and, even though he nominally held a title analogous to Captain or Major in the force, his day-to-day job was still detective, and he was quite good at his job. This was also one of the reasons he left the force/retired early.
While basically a nice guy, he's definitely got that "don't piss me off" on-the-job attitude. He's been part of several high-profile cases, and shown well. High-profile frequently means "disturbing" in one way or another. His last year on the force found him a bit unfocused, and he took extended leave, then actually retired.
A portion of the family has always taken the Martial Arts seriously, some of them quite seriously. Chin found it to be a DAMN USEFUL part of his life on the force, and has always excelled in this from a very early age. After leaving the police force he stayed in one of the family retreats, visiting with Grandfather Fa, who was happy to have him finally come back to his senses. :-)
