Realms: Idlewild Logs

October 24

October 24, 2004

Morning dawns pale and crisp over the Fall forest. It touches Steven first, sleeping on a whim up in the treetops with the scouts in one of the lookout posts. He climbs down-- still not the first to wake, as one of the camp's self-appointed watchers and guardians is doing precisely that job with bow ready-- feeling remarkably refreshed and much better than yesterday, as though the altitude and sleep have cleared something foggy out of his system. Vague dreams leave him with the desire to go and check on his siblings, though he cannot remember the details of the foreboding.

In Aiden's tent, the early morning light starts to set the painted walls aglow but does not even begin to rouse his partner Sol-- or the dark-haired Fall elf snuggled up to his other side looking so charmingly young and at peace.

It is unclear why it woke Aiden, but awake and surprisingly clearheaded for the time, he is.

Steven clambers down and hits the ground, and stretches quite slowly and languidly. That was probably the best sleep he'd had in a long time! He straightens, looking about and wondering where he might be able to find the others. He starts towards where he thinks the others' tents are.

Aiden stays still for a few moments, enjoying the morning air. Carefully, he slips out from between the two elves and leaves the tent, clothed exactly as he slept - in pants. He doesn't want to disturb the two sleepers, but he's not tired enough to go back to sleep. He decides to get started on breakfast. Soleil offered to cook, but Aiden can do it too and he's refreshed and lively.

Lauren went to bed alone, but wakes up to the distinct feeling of a warm and nice-smelling body cuddled up in front of her, face turned away and back to Lauren. Unlike the others, Lauren wakes up with a bit of a hangover and takes a few moments to sort through recent events, her present location, and who the hell this might plausibly be.

Aiden is just settling down by the site of last night's fire when he spots Steven. He waves, "Hey. Morning. How are you doing?"

Steven operks a bit as he spots Aiden, and he smiles and meanders over, resisting the inexplicable urge to curl up by the fire in a felinesque manner. "Morning, Aiden. Doing well, thank you. Slept in a tree last night, surprisingly comfortable. How are you doing?

Ayali pops his head out of Menissippa's tent and smiles at them both. "Good morning to you! I was just thinking about starting breakfast..."

Aiden's already fussing with the bottom layer of the fire, setting dry underbrush and small kindling in. He looks around for something to light it with, and silently thanks whoever's out there that he learned to light fires without a match during that unfortunate stint in the Boy Scouts. "Morning, Ayali. I'm doing great, Steven. Thanks for asking." He looks like he's doing great too. Best he's looked since Summer.

Lauren mumbles something into her tentmate's soft hair and stirs. Recent memories eventually float up out of her backbrain, where honestly she'd prefer some of them stayed, and horrible black embarassment does much to blow away the vapors of sleep. She didn't remember inviting Ayali for an encore--and this back doesn't have Ayali's tattoo on it. Still muzzy-headed, with as much speed as possible, Lauren scrambles clumsily to the other side of her tent to take stock of things.

Steven smiles pleasantly to Ayali. "Good morning." He looks a little curiously to Aiden, wondering if Aiden is being facecious or not. "Oh? Why 'great' as opposed to just 'good?'"

Aiden looks up from what he's doing, wearing a very genuine smile. "Couldn't say. Just feels that way, eh?"

Steven considers for a moment, then nods. "Sure, that works."

Aiden nods and then goes back to working on getting the breakfast fire lit intently.

Ayali smiles back with extra watts of brightness when smiled at. Male models would kill for the ease with which he makes beauty look unintentional. Emerging tattooed and loincloth-clad from the tent where he apparently slept, he joins Aiden with oatmeal and dried berries, a pot, bowls, spoons, and then takes himself off to fetch water with a cheerful declaration.

Steven pauses, considering for a minute or two, before asking, "Anything I can do to help?"

The pale orange, nearly strawberry-blonde head in Lauren's tent turns lazily over as the owner stretches and cat-curls her tongue in a yawn. "Whnaah?" she asks sleepily, with a smile not very much less charming than the invisibly outside Ayali. It's Grennit. She appears to be fully clothed under the covers.

Lauren tries to shake the muck out of her head. THIS was unexpected. "Guh-um-grennit?" She stops fumbing around for a shotgun to chase off the intruder. "What are you doing in here?"

Aiden looks up from the newly-born fire that he's putting feeder logs into. "Uhm. Whatever you like, really. I don't have anything in particular that needs doing for me, though."

Steven mms a little, loooking around, and nods. "Okay. I'll just wait here, then." He grins a little. "Something's bound to happen sooner or latter."

Grennit squints adorably. "S'eeping..."

Melierel and Seodil come out of their tents to join the party at the fire as Zhi enters from another direction. As they all converge, the first two settle with nodded greetings. Zhi frowns and says without preamble, "Lotte is several days' travel away still, and not particularly inclined to leave the forest. She said to tell you she wants more time far away from the key, if that means anything to you?"

"You're in my tent!" Lauren informs Grennit. Everything still feels unreal at the edges, and this isn't helping. "MY tent," she adds for emphasis. "Which I sleep in. With nobody else in it."

Aiden looks over at Zhi and nods. "Yes, it does actually. Thanks, Zhi. She'll be missed, but I quite understand her not wanting to leave." I don't want to leave either...

Grennit gives Lauren a waking-up look that suggests Lauren is speaking the foolish tongue of dreams. "This isn't your tent. This is a guest tent. I don't have mine here, so I need a guest tent too. So here I am."

Steven nods quietly. "That's understandable, Zhi. Thank you very much."

Zhi nods, and says quietly, "It looks as though you are free at any time. Do you need more provisions for the trip? Foxcatcher has offered to provide. They like you and add that you'd be welcome to stay and get to know everyone too, but as I explained you have an errand to run they've settled on hoping you return again." He smiles.

Lauren had missed that point of distinction with the sleeping arrangements. "Oh," she says, deflated. The arm clamping a blanket over her bosom releases some of its vice-like pressure. Warily, she fishes her Grey World clothes out of her pack and dresses in that way girls do that involves exposing no flesh at all.

Aiden's smile is a little tight at the edges. "I hope we do too."

Steven nods quietly. "Same here."

Zhi winces. "It was a hope that you would return to visit Foxcatcher clan, not a dubious note on whether you're expected to return at all."

Aiden says, "Oh, I realise that. I think the latter is foremost in our minds, though. We know who's there.."

Steven glances to Aiden. "Erm. Well, Zhi. If we have any choice in the matter, we definitely will."

Aiden finishes up with building the fire and sits back to let it go on its own for a while before the food it put on it.

Grennit yawns and leaves the tent without a backwards look at Lauren, entering the conversation midway. "We what?" She looks at Steven expectantly.

Ayali returns with a waterskin and settles companionably near Aiden. "Have you seen Aulren yet this morning?" He smiles hopefully.

Seodil catches Aiden's eye and smiles.

Steven looks over to Grennit. "Good morning, Grennit. We'll definitely be back here, is what I meant."

Aiden brightens immediately at that smile, his eyes staying on Seodil even as he answers Ayali. "Lauren. Her name's Lauren. Haven't seen her this morning. I'm not sure where she went to sleep, either, I'm afraid."

With full knowledge of exactly what people are going to assume, Lauren follows Grennit closely out of the tent. So they think I'm a slut anyway. Now they can think I'm a lesbi...oh no... Ayali. It takes a major effort of will not to retreat back into her tent. With a pinched tone in her voice, she greets everyone anyway. "Morning--*cough*--all."

Zhi sighs. "I am quite sure that you will return, Aiden, Steven. Badger Mattress has a feeling about it. Should you desire more aid or arrows for the journey, however, you have friends here." He smiles.

Aiden, who's been working on the fire, and chatting, didn't even notice which tent Grennit came out of. Seeing Lauren coming out of the same tent, then, doesn't automatically make him assume she and Grennit have also emerged from the same closet. "Morning, Lauren."

Grennit flops down next to Ayali and pokes at his dried berries.

Aiden nods, "Thanks, Zhi. We might take up on that offer, actually. I'd personally feel better about being a little more heavily armed going in there." I doubt you have tanks and long-range missiles, though.

Lauren seizes on the opportunity to think about hurting people instead of being a lesbian. "Armed? What? Going in where?" She casts a surprised look at Steven--Steven's not going to shoot people, is he? He's NICE.

Zhi nods, and says "If you would like extra warriors, as well..." and leaves it hanging.

Steven smiles to Zhi. "Well, then I'll take that as a sign that we'll certainly be coming back, then." He looks over and nods, smiling, to Lauren. "Good morning, Lauren." It takes about five seconds for him to connect her coming out of the same tent Grennit did, but since he was not aware of the romance-assistnace being put into the food yesterday, nor expoerienced it after the time with the crafters, he doesn't make any immediate lewd conclusions.

Steven glances to Lauren at her question, then glances to Aiden to provide an answer, since his brother knows more.

Ayali blinks at Grennit and Lauren, looking from one to the other, and to the careful observer... does rather clearly wonder if there was a reason they came out of the same tent. Ayali's chosen reason is also clearly not sleeping.

"So, Lauren," Ayali beams. "Enjoying our hospitality, I hope?"

Aiden nods at Steven. "Hey, Lauren? We need to explain a bit before we get going. Breakfast is probably a good enough time to do it.."

Aiden's tent makes a loud squawking noise.

Aiden looks over at his tent. "What the fuck?" He stands up and walks over to it, poking his head into the flap.

"I. um, yeah," Lauren replies absently to Ayali. What the fuck IS in Aiden's tent? That sounded a little like Moops.

Steven frowns, looking over at Aiden's tent. "The hell...?"

Soleil and Kip look back at Aiden. Both are rather pink. Sol finishes putting his pants on in a hurry and says, "I'm fine," kisses Aiden on the cheek, and whispers in his ear on the way out. Later.

Aiden walks back over to the fire and sits down. "It's cool. No worries." He immediately tries to get everyone's attention back to the matter at hand. "So.. About the next leg of the journey.."

Sol joins Aiden a half second later, looking as though he's listening intently. He's got a slight flush to his skin.

Steven rests his elbows on his knees, and his chin on his hands, looking over to Aiden.

Lauren is not dissuaded. "Everything's okay, right?"

Aiden says, "Yeah. Everything's fine. Cold feet. You know how it goes."

"Not in the MORNING," Lauren points out. "Feet are nice and warm in the morning."

Sol nods and says quietly, "Kip's cuddly when he's asleep... and elves are not immune to cold feet."

Soleil immediately adds, "So. The next leg of the journey? We have Lotte?"

Aiden swiftly switches into storyteller mode. "It goes like this, Lauren. Lotte, Steven and I all arrived here pretty closely to each other. We arrived in something of a Safe Zone. That's where we met Soleil and his sister. They took us under their wings and kept an eye on us while we found our footing here. It didn't last and we ended up leaving the barriers of the Safe Zone. It was there that we encountered the next sibling, Birch."

Lauren looks uneasily at Steven. "Is this for real?" she mouths.

Steven nods, once, at Lauren's question. "And Birch was... unpleasant."

Aiden says, "Birch presented us with an offer. It turns out we'd been brought here as Generals for our Father's army. We have some slight advantages over pure bloods that worked to his benefit. Birch, it seems, had killed our father and wanted us to lead what was now her army. The only other option was to die by her hand."

Aiden says, "Sadly, Birch is no longer with us. Our father, it seems, is very much still alive though and apparently the offer stands. We have a key to his tower and he has invited us to join him there."

Lauren says, "Waiwaiwait. Father what?"

Aiden says, "His name is Haasha. He calls himself our father. We've seen nothing to disprove that."

The elves who were not there look rapt with fascination. Soleil, despite his attendance at more of the events, also looks as though he's very interested-- if somewhat more grimly.

Lauren blinks. "Okay, so your father's this Haasha guy. But what about your mother?"

Aiden says, with obvious distaste, "I'm not entirely sure that any of us have one."

Steven says quietly, "We don't know. If we do have mothers, it's likely we odn't share the same mother."

Sol speaks up, now. "It also seems that the wizard Haasha was responsible for my Court's decline into madness, by taking advantage of my uncle's grief and guilt upon my mother's death." He ignores, outwardly, the issue of Aiden's mother... except for the quick squeeze of his hand.

"Okay, wow. That's...really something." Lauren ponders. "Doesn't explain me much, but I think I like it better that way. So what happened then?"

Aiden says, "We have a score to settle."

Aiden says, "That brings us, generally, to here, Lauren. We're going to the tower."

Looking at Lauren, Sol adds, "He wished to pave the way for one of you to take control of the chaos in Winter Court... as the first of your elven conquests. My friends declined." He smiles. "I too have a... score to settle."

Aiden glances at Soleil, then at Seodil. My score is not for me. It's for you two and what he took from you.

Lauren says, "This is NUTS. What are you going to do when you find him? Kill him? Burn his house down?"

Aiden looks straight at Lauren, seriously. "I intend to kill him, and if you ever want to live a life free of his meddling, I suggest you bring your intentions in line with that. He has already made clear that he will not leave us alone until he gets what he wants, or kills us trying."

Seodil says quietly, "While I approve of confronting this mage, are we not going to Frangipiani's tower first, for Anisaire and young Kip?" Young Kip and Anisaire emerge simultaneously from separate tents, look at each other thoughtfully, and come to join the group at the fire. Kip comes out of the tent that Sol came out of.

Melierel looks as though he's more than a little lost in this discussion.

Aiden looks at Seodil. "I'd be led to believe that Frangipani's tower was after Haasha's. Is that not correct?"

Steven says quietly, "And he's already made it clear that he will try again, and will spread more misery, with or without us. For that, he has to be stopped. But yes, we are stopping by Frangipiani's tower first.

Ayali looks at Aiden, looks at the fire-- ready now for cooking-- and sets about starting a pot of water.

Lauren protests, "he hasn't been manipulating ME, geez--" before somebody mentions Frangipani. "And who's this incense guy?"

Aiden says, "Lauren. You're here, that means he's manipulating you. It wasn't an accident. What incense guy?"

Steven says gently, "None of us came here by accident, Lauren. He brought us here."

"I DROVE," Lauren insists. "Incense guy. Frangipani. It's an aromatherapy thing."

Seodil shrugs to Aiden, "I am uncertain of the direction of Haasha..." and looks at Zhi. The blue mohawk twitches as Zhi notices and gives a quiet answer. "I know the way to Haasha. Tell me the direction of your other mage..?" Seodil rises, and the two move together to discuss it softly.

Aiden says, "Frangipani's a woman."

Steven deadpans, "Drove? Really? What exit off of I-95 did you take to get to Summer?

Lauren scowls. "I-5 exit 94, thank you VERY much. Three blocks to the left and fuck you in the ear."

Aiden puts a hand to his forehead.

Melierel snaps, "This is not constructive. Behave." He's looking straight at Lauren.

Both of Steven's eyebrows shoot up, but after a moment he does back down a bit and grin. "Good one. But, Lauren... honest, this isn't where you were. For the rest of us, we fell into bodies of water. When we managed to swim out....

Aiden's eyes are far away when he speaks, "I flipped my canoe and got dragged under by.. something. I was fishing. For dinner. I was out working in the mountains over the summer."

Lauren wiggles in her seat, looking sulky for a moment but--wonder of wonders--behaving. "When you swum out, what?"

Aiden adds, "I didn't swim out. I blacked out from lack of oxygen - drowned, I guess - and woke up in a tent in the safe zone."

Raising his head from discussion with Zhi, Seodil says without raising his voice beyond a normal speaking volume, "Aiden, you are correct. A straight line from here would appear to bring us close to Haasha's tower-- when it chooses to appear-- before we reach the mage Frangipani. A detour, however, could be made to avoid Haasha's domain should we choose to reverse the order."

Moopy, as always, chooses his own sweet time to appear. He chooses right now, and says with morbid glee to Lauren, "How does he know he's not really dead then?"

Aiden glances over at Seodil. "Maybe we ought to just set out and see how we feel when it gets closer? Would getting back to Haasha's tower mean walking all the seasons again?"

Steven considers for a moment, remembering sometign that occasionally nags him about this... world. "Seodil... is Haasha's tower equidistant from Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter?

"...might be," replies Lauren to nobody in particular. "That's creepy as hell."

Aiden says, "What is, Lauren?"

Steven nods in agreement to Lauren, thinking she's agreeing with him.

Lauren gives herself a shake. "Um. Just having sort of a Twilight Zone moment. What if we're all dead already or something."

Zhi shakes his head, answering instead. "Haasha's tower appears in a valley between Winter and Fall, when it chooses to appear."

Aiden nods at Lauren. "Might be."

Aiden doesn't appear particularly disturbed by this revelation.

Seodil nods to Aiden, "I suspect that beginning the journey at this point is the best start that can be made. We will consider it along the way. Neither location is closer than a week's travel or more."

Steven blinks once, then shakes his head. "I don't thikn so, Lauren. Even if we are, we're very much alive here, and we can be quite very badly hurt, besides." He doesn't look at Aiden as he says that. "So it's an interesting philosophical question but kind of moot."

Steven nods to Seodil. "I'm for going to Frangipani first, all told.

Aiden says, quietly. "Yeah. Me too."

It occurs to both Aiden and Steven that Melierel looked uncommonly smug when Lauren obeyed his command to behave... and that he's still giving their sister a thoughtful, considering look.

Aiden files that little tidbit of information into the "things that he doesn't want to think about" folder of his brain.

Moopy says "I bet they are. I bet everyone's dead. ...Ew. I wonder if Alayi's dead, too?"

"Shut UP about that," Lauren snaps.

Seodil and Sol both add a quiet vote each for Frangipani first. Anisaire looks awkward, then says in a small voice, "If you don't mind... please. What if she can only do the magic before it's too old?"

The timing was right for Anisaire to flinch hard at Lauren and shrink into a huddled little ball.

Kip glares at Lauren and moves to comfort Anisaire.

Steven's eyes flick over to Melierel briefly, and narrow a little. For a brief moment he wonders if he even has a remote chance of taking on the elf. Lauren's outburst maks him blink quizziacly at her, frowning. "It's all right, Anisaire," he says gently, not loking away from Lauren. "I would like to see her before we approach Haasha, as well. The worst that Frangipani will do is either say 'no,' or," he grins comfortably, "make us go on a scavenger hunt."

Lauren wasn't looking at Ani, but rather at a spot slightly above and not far to the left of her head, when sh snapped. "Wainno, nono. Not about THAT," she stammers. "Other things!"

Aiden nods. "Alright.. I think that about settles then, hmm? If we'd all rather get that out of the way before we go on to him.. I think it's probably the right thing to do."

Melierel stands up, walks over and sits down beside Lauren. He does nothing overt, but there is a definite air of menace to it. Especially from Lauren's perspective.

Steven's eyes flick over to focus now on Meleriel. All right. Now he's getting creepy. he listens to the conversation but he does not take his gaze away from Mel.

"I didn't MEENIT like that," Lauren keens. "I wasn't even talking to her! we c'n go to Frangipani it's fine whatever but I didn't MEENIT like that I SWEAR."

Moopy looks at Melierel, then at Lauren. "Whoa. This is the guy that spanked you. You are totally an S&M slut!" The squid looks indignant.

Zhi nods and says, "That sounds about right. Now, since we're all here and I'm sure we're all concerned by now... Lauren, I think we all need to talk."

Zhi was probably nodding to Aiden and Steven. Probably.

Lauren snarls and scrabbles at an empty spot in the air. A few seconds with no spray of blood later, she calms down again. "Yahuh," she mumbles.

Steven winces a little. "It's all right, Lauren. Just... try to relax a little before we get on the road, okay?" For a moment, he tries to give a meaningful and somewhat pleading look to the local pharmacist-at-large, Grennit.

Aiden watches Lauren, a little alarmed at her increasingly erratic behaviour. He shoots a concerned look over in Seodil's direction.

Melierel puts a hand lightly on Lauren's shoulder. "Are you all right?" Zhi says firmly, "That is what I want to talk about. Lauren. What are you doing, and who are you talking to?"

Lauren points an index finger straight up, and sniffs. "Moops," she explains.

Steven blinks, his gaze moving from Melierel. "Uh... what?"

Seodil is frowning at Lauren; he looks over to Aiden, then relocates to sit beside him. Quietly, he says "She is prone to this. I am not certain it is safe to travel into hostile territory with her. We may have to do something."

"Moopy," Lauren elaborates. She mumbles something further, under her breath.

Aiden leans towards Seodil to respond. "Let's see what Zhi's got up his sleeve. He has a better handle on her than any of the rest of us do."

There is absolutely nothing in the spot of air that Lauren is pointing at, to any eyes but Lauren's.

"What is Moopy?" Zhi asks, patient. Melierel looks quite concerned.

Steven blinks, opening his mouth, then closing it. his eyes flick over to Seodil and Aiden, and he nods a little even though he wasn't included in the conversation. his gaze goes back to Lauren.

"S&M makes you cranky," says Moopy, unharmed by Lauren's scrabbling earlier.

The spot of air that was so damningly empty a couple of seconds ago fades into semi-opacity...floating up there, for all to see, is a smallish squid-like thing, about eight inches long. It's orange, with blue spots. It blinks, as if surprised, and lifts a tentacle to wave.

"NOW you can shut your stupid beaky mouth," Lauren scolds her squid.

Steven's eyes flick over to the spot of color that appears in his vision, and he gapes.

Aiden looks up at the small squid and says, under his breath, "Fuck. It's contagious."

As Moopy looks for all the world as if he's trying to give Lauren the finger with tentacles, everyone-- for the very first time-- hears him speak. "I will not and you can't make me NYAH. S&M slut. Ho. You liked it when he spanked you, I swear. This is getting way too kinky for me. I'm not old enough to be here anymore."

Steven's left eye twitches. Once.

Aiden's jaw drops. He looks around to make sure that everyone else is reacting, too. This had better NOT just be him.

Melierel drops the dagger he started to stab the floating squid with when it starts talking. As the dagger sinks point-first into the soil, he sinks back down and starts laughing. It has a slight edge of hysteria to it.

Lauren's mouth falls open too. Sassed brutally by her childhood playmate and confidante, in front of everyone. The image fades back into vapor.

Aiden looks over at Melierel and says, "No no. You're not allowed to go crazy from this. We don't need any more crazies in this group."

Seodil eyes the apparition measuringly, unfazed. As it fades, he transfers his attention to Lauren. Sol's eyes are wide, with whites showing. Kip and Anisaire are very similar.

Ayali says plaintively, "Was that Moopy?"

Steven's mouth finally starts to close. "Uh... how long... I mean... how long has he... it...?"

Grennit moves to Lauren's other side and puts an arm around her, trying to comfort.

Lauren scrubs her eyes. "That was Moopy," she says, huddling against Grennit. "Long time, Steven. M'sorry, everybody."

Struggling for calm, Melierel looks up at Aiden and nods, visibly trying to get back into a more normal state.

Lauren doesn't see Moopy anymore, either... just like everybody else.

Aiden does what anyone in this situation would do. He distracts himself by getting a start on breakfast.

The water is boiling merrily. Noticing Aiden's move, Ayali hands him the sack of dry oatmeal and offers berries in silence.

Aiden nods, "Thanks." He engrosses himself completely in the act of making breakfast for everyone in the little group.

Steven blinks a little, nodding at Lauren's response.

Grennit pulls Lauren in protectively. "It's all right," she murmurs. "I'm sure you'll work it out. There, there..."

Lauren sniffles. "M'nuts," she tells Grennit's shirt. "N'want breakfast."

Breakfast is taking shape fast under Aiden's hands and Ayali's mute support. It smells fruity, and it's probably not even drugged this time.

Aiden says, "Breakfast is incoming, Lauren."

Grennit rubs Lauren's back and says, "Well, there aren't any nuts, sorry... what about berries?" apparently not understanding. "I'm sure he'll forgive you. You should eat."

Ayali looks over at Steven and smiles hesitantly. "Have you been... travelling together long?" he asks, clearly lost in a sea of strange behavior.

Lauren mumbles something more or less positive about berries, and nods. "W'goin to Frangipani's."

Steven blinks to Ayali. "Uh... For uhm, quite a while, yes, actually. Since Summer, where we met Lauren, and, uh, since Winter for the rest of us.

Grennit pokes Melierel's knee. "How about some breakfast for Lauren?" He blinks at her, finally no longer laughing, and then gets up to go see Aiden. "Is it ready?" he asks, looking a little helpless.

Aiden looks up at Grennit and smiles. "It's ready." He actually serves breakfast, though, to each and every person. It almost seems as though he's doing it out of habit. Maybe something that he picked up when he was younger?

Seodil smiles approval and accepts his with a more formal murmur of thanks than most of the elves. Sol... glances over at Lauren, and looks quite wry as he thanks Aiden for making breakfast today.
