Realms: Idlewild Logs

November 2

Idlewild Nov 03 2003

Aiden stands up and heads out of the tower, prefering to talk about the list where Frangipani isn't as likely to be just behind the door listening. He settles down comfortably on the ground less than five minutes away from the tower.

Aiden waits until the rest of the group is gathered, then reads the list outloud for all of them, setting the scrap of paper down on the ground in front of them, weighing it down with a small rock. "Well."

Steven walks over to Aiden, rubbing his neck. "That's... quite a list....

Milk as white as a cow
    Corn as yellow as hair
    A blood-soaked shoe
    Dead man's fingernail
Cloth severed from a lost land (one inch square)
    Virgin's blood
    Virgin's tears
The moonlight song of a virgin clad only in silver and acorns
    Semen of a righteous man
Dust from a gift long lain fallow
    Rest for the weary
One drop of blood from a true and piercing love
A painful apology that speaks no language

Aiden drums his fingers against his knee. "Well. Some of it is pretty straight-forward.. The rest, though.."

Sol says dubiously, "What sort of containers are in that bag, Aiden?"

Aiden sets the bag down next to the piece of paper, opening it and adjusting it so that the group can see the containers. "How do we catch a 'moonlight song'?"

Soleil picks up a container and inspects it, opening the lid. A breath of sound comes out.

Steven blinks at Sol. "Uh.. that way, I guess....

Aiden blinks. "Well. That works. At least that's that problem solved. Anyone have any thoughts on these?"

Lines on the list are glowing green. Specifically, the ones for "song, dust, rest, and apology."

Aiden looks down at the list. "When you opened that.. these started glowing." He points at the list.

There are four containers total that match the one in Sol's hand. Soleil nods and puts the container down, resealing the lid. When her hand leaves it, the lines stop glowing.

Steven says, "Well, that helps...."

Aiden pulls those containers out and sets them next to the bag for the moment. He looks in, taking another container out.

This container is small. The lines with "blood," "tears" and "semen" glow green.

Aiden looks up at the rest of the group, with one eyebrow raised. "Well. That's seven out of thirteen."

Steven says, "Are there any more containers?"

Aiden looks down at the list, "Pardon me. Eight." Aiden checks the bag for more containers.

Aiden nods, "Yeah. Thirteen containers."

Steven nods. "Well, we know how that'll work, then...

Aiden says, "Alright. At least we know which containers go to which. Now, any thoughts on what goes in them? The shoe and fingernail seem clear enough, but, milk as white as a cow? Where I grew up, at least, most cows were brown. Or black and white."

Seodil says soberly, "Find a sick cow?"

Aiden winces.

Steven says, "Milk from an albino cow?"

Aiden says, "Hrm. Maybe that's it. I wonder if this list will actually confirm if we get the right thing into the container."

Steven peers at the containers. "We could always test. Thoguh I hope we don't have to fill the entire container with virgin's tears or blood...."

Soleil says philosophically, "One way to find out."

Aiden nods, "Do one of the ones that we're already sure of?"

Scanning the list, Sol says, "Virgin's blood sounds easiest. Yes."

Seodil politely stands up and draws his sword. He looks at the group.

Aiden frowns, watching Seodil warily.

Seodil catches Aiden's eye and raises an eyebrow. "Do you have a smaller blade?"

Aiden reaches behind him and grabs his pack. He goes digging through it and pulls out a small knife. He turns the handle towards Seodil, holding it up for him.

The silver elf resheathes his sword and sits down, nodding at Aiden. "I do not need to cut anyone if they prefer you. I will do so if asked, however."

Aiden nods, resting the knife on his knee, handle turned out. "Alright."

Steven looks around, and asks warilly, "Who else... I mean, who's a virgin here?"

Aiden shakes his head, "Sorry. I can't help."

Soleil coughs politely and says, "I --oh, good." She looks relieved that Steven asked.

Lotte blushes and shakes her head. "Can't help with that one."

Seodil says solemnly, "I cannot serve for this except to cut."

Steven looks around, and sighs. "All right." he starts rolling up his sleeve, muttering, "'I am the keymaster,' and all that...." "How do you want to do this? That is, how do you want to do this as long as it lets me survive it?'

Aiden picks up the knife and holds it out to Steven. "Would you prefer to do the cut yourself?"

Lotte says, "Should we... um, should we catch your tears too?"

Aiden reaches into the bag and grabs one of the smaller jars that the list indicated were for the blood.

Steven looks without joy at the knife, then shakes is head. "No, you do it. Just need something to bite down on." He looks to Lotte. "Uhm.. not sure if I'll cry during this, depends on how painful Aiden is. But just in case might want to be ready with a container."

Aiden glances over at Seodil. "If you want to get the tears at the same time, Seodil's sword might be a better choice.."

Steven says to Aiden, "Let's not get crazy here...."

Seodil looks solemn. "I do not think that... damaging Steven is in the best interest of anyone."

Aiden grins, "Alright. I'm not going to slice your arm open. I'm going to keep it small."

Steven says wryly, "Thank you. Hmm.. Let's start small, then, see if it accepts a small bit, like a finger cut or someting like that.

Aiden moves over to Steven's side with the knife and the container. He holds the container out to Lotte. "Would you? I don't think I can hold it steady with one hand."

Lotte says, "Can't we just prick his finger?"

Lotte sighs and grabs the container, then hands it out to Steven. "Cut me, because I know you'll be able to catch blood and tears if you do."

Aiden holds up the knife. It's got a blunt point. "I can't prick his finger. I'm going to make the cut small and shallow. I'm not going to cut his finger off. Like a papercut."

Steven's shoulder slump. "A papercut." he shakes his head. "Yeah, better get the jar for the tears ready, too."

Aiden holds out his free hand for Steven's. "This will hurt less if I use the back of your hand rather than the pads of your fingers or your palm."

Sol looks at the two admitted virgins with interest and says, "The mage did say that we could substitute an excess of some items if we can't find everything... using them both could help that, no?"

Steven blinks to Lotte. "I thought you said you weren't a virgin!"

Aiden looks over at Sol. "Good point. Wouldn't it be better to wait until we need to do that, rather than doing it right now, though?"

Sol says wryly, "What, and waste the courage when we have it?"

Lotte blushes again. "Yeah, well... the sword and stuff... I'm ok with a papercut."

Aiden says, "Do we use seperate containers, or mix them?"

Seodil looks in the bag and says, "They have multiplied."

Aiden looks at the bag, blinking. "Oh. Well. Might as well use them then."

Steven shakes his head. "Well.. no, it's all right, Lotte. I'll bleed, I don't mind." He grins. "Besides, it doesn't say how we have to get the tears. I hope you're ticklish. Come on Aiden, let's --" He blinks to Seodil. "Multiplied?"

Calmly, the silver elf gestures toward the bag. "Yes."

Lotte grits her teeth. "Someone please just do it now before I run away!"

Aiden looks over at Lotte, "Alright. Steven?"

Aiden holds out his hand for Lotte's.

Sol grabs a blood container and holds it ready.

Lotte quickly shoves her hand in Aiden's, tears already streaming down her cheeks. She shuts her eyes and waits.

Alert to opportunity, Sol uses the first container to collect tears one-handed and reaches for another quickly.

Aiden frowns, "I'll try to make this easy on you, Lotte. I'm sorry." He says "I'm sorry" right as he makes a small, shallow cut to the back of her hand, turning her hand in his so that Steven can catch the blood once he's ready..

Steven blinks, and grabs hold of a container for the blood.

Lotte jumps slightly at the sensation and bites her lip, but does not cry out.

Steven winces, holding the container just below Lotte's hand to catch the blood, glancing at the paper to see if it changes or anything to indicate it has enough.

The list has neatly crossed off "virgin's tears" and is starting to cross out "virgin's blood" as well. The line progresses until the container bottom is coated-- maybe ten drops total.

Steven blinks. "Okay... that's enough... the list.. uh, says we have enough tears and blood...

Aiden turns Lotte's hand back over in his, and presses tightly down on the small cut to stop the bleeding. "Okay, Lotte?"

Lotte breathes a sigh of relief and nods. She removes her hand from Aiden's and presses down on the cut with her free hand, humming gently to herself.

Aiden looks over at Steven. "Still want to do this?"

Lotte holds up her finger to show Steven. "Look, Steven. It'll be over as quickly as that." She smiles at him encouragingly.

Steven lets out a breath, and nods. "Right, sure. Let's do it...." he holds out his hand, willingly but not entirely enthusiastically.

Aiden grabs a waterskin and uses a bit of water to wash Lotte's blood off of his blade before he takes Steven's hand. "Ready?"

Steven nods to Aiden. "Go ahead."

Aiden makes the same small, shallow cut on Steven's hand, holding it to let the blood pool a bit before tilting to allow it to drop into the container.

The list bolds the "virgin's blood" category slightly.

Aiden cleans the knife off again once the container with Steven's blood is done. "Thanks, Steven."

Sol sighs, looking relieved, and beams at both virgins. "Thank you."

Lotte holds her hand out for Steven's, offering him her healing power.

Steven nods, letting out a breath as he puts a cloth on the cut. "No problem at all." he smiels thankfully to Lotte, holding out his hand to her. "Thank you, Lotte...."

Aiden tucks the knife back into his pack, then carefully puts the containers back into the bag that Frangipani provided. "At least the list is helpful. We'll know when we're right."

Lotte takes Steven's hand and hums gently again, healing the cut closed.

Aiden sits back down where he was before, in front of the list. He looks it over thoughtfully.

Aiden looks up, "Is the Grey World a "lost land"?"

Steven watches the healing, quite amazedly. It's something quite new to him.

Sol bites her lip and says reluctantly, "It's lost to you now... isn't it?"

Aiden nods at Soleil. He doesn't look particularly upset about this at all. "It is."

Lotte lets go of Steven and moves to inspect the list next to Aiden. She sighs dramatically. "I suppose you're not willing to go out singing tonight, Steven?"

Steven smiles and thanks Lotte again, then at Soleil's question thinks back to his dreams or visions, or whatever they were. He nods; he isn't really that fond of what was once 'home' but he's also certain that it's not quite done with them yet."

Sol's lips curve in a small smile, and she reaches to touch Aiden's knee gently.

Steven blinks to Lotte. "You look much better in silver and acorns than I do.

Seodil actually smirks at Steven and Lotte's interchange.

Aiden looks over at Soleil and points down at one of the things on the list. "I suspect we can do something about this one."

Sol leans over to see which one Aiden means.

Lotte scrunches up her face to mask a small smile.

Seodil says thoughtfully, "Lotte? Do you have any silver to wear?"

Lotte thinks about it and looks mildly disappointed. "No, I don't."

Seodil runs fingers through his own long hair and gets a tiny smile. "Then I think I shall provide you a necklace of acorns and silver."

The silver elf adds solemnly, "The rest of this list is largely metaphorical, after all. I do not think you must have metal, only to fulfill the spirit."

Aiden is still looking at the list, trying to puzzle out some of the more obscure items on it. His eyes keep coming back to the cloth and he says, "Shall we try a scrap of clothing for the cloth? If we're wrong, we're wrong.. but if we're right, that's one less for us to puzzle out."

Lotte gives Seodil an odd look. "Thank you... I think."

Seodil goes expressionless at the uncertain thanks and nods stiffly. "If you wish another way, I do not have to pull my hair out. It was an offer."

Lotte looks suprised at what she takes as an offended comment from Seodil. "No, I'm sorry. I really appreciate it. The necklace sounds lovely, really."

Aiden goes digging back through his bag and pulls out a long sleeved grey shirt. "Someone want to cut a square from this?"

Seodil's silver eyes thaw a little and he nods to Lotte, mollified.

Sol looks thoughtful and says, "Excuse me." She stands and walks back toward the tower.

Steven blinks, looking up at Sol.

Aiden says, "Sol?"

Soleil pauses. "Do you need me? I want to ask the mage for an item we need."

Aiden shakes his head, "No. We'll be fine."

Sol adds, "Oh. That we need to fulfill an item, I mean.... okay. I'll be back soon, I think. She won't eat me."

Aiden grabs the knife back out of his pack and starts working on cutting a square of fabric from the bottom back hem of the shirt's torso. Once it's cut, and probably a fair bit more than an inch, since it's difficult to cut well with a knife, he grabs the container that the list indicated was for this and slips it inside.

Steven frowns and stands. "Uhm... even so, one of us should go with you, Sol, I think? Just in case?" He looks to Aiden and Lotte for confirmation.

Aiden nods at Steven. "Good idea, Steven." He shoots a grateful look at the other man.

Soleil is out of earshot already, walking quickly. The list has crossed off the cloth, meanwhile.

Lotte watches Sol go, then watches Aiden try the piece of cloth. She half-whispers to him, "Can you and Sol figure out the 'true and piercing love' bit?"

Steven nods, and goes to catch up with Sol.

Aiden looks up at Lotte and nods, "Yeah. That's the one I was pointing out to him earlier. I think we can figure out what it is." He looks back down at the list, to see if its doing anything.

Lotte smiles at the cuteness of Aiden and Sol, then peers down at the list as well.

Steven catches up with Sol, smiling to her and walking with her back to the wizard's tower.

Lotte reads the list and chuckles. "I may have to prance around naked, but I do not envy the righteous man."

Seodil definitely smirks.

Aiden looks up at Lotte and chuckles. "Yeah. No kidding."

Steven comes back with Sol shortly after, without incident. "Anything else that we can do now before we need to start getting metaphorical?" he asks.

Aiden frowns down at the list. "I don't think so, no."

Lotte purses her lips and tries desperately not to laugh at poor Steven.

Seodil smirks cheerfully at the sky.

Steven glances between Lotte and Seodil, and nods, choosing to take Aiden's answer.

Aiden can't resist any further. "Well, maybe not metaphorical. But.. personal."

Sol tilts her head at Aiden. "Oh... you're ready?"

Aiden stares up at Sol, mouth slightly open. "Er. Not quite."

Lotte nods. "I think you should take a look at this list, Steven."

Steven coughs a little. "I... have. The question is if I'm 'righteous,' and I honestly can't answer that for myself. My teacher taught me that the righteous man never considers himself so. But if I don't consider myself righteous, and thus consider myself righteous, then I'm not righteous, and so... at that point in explaining it, my teacher would fall over laughing.

Sol rummages in the group's packs and finds a waterskin and then snags a pure glass container from the bag. She moves off a little ways and starts a small campfire.

Sol looks up from concentrating and giggles at Steven. Even Seodil smiles.

Aiden looks a little confused. He spends a few moments trying to sort that out in his head.

Lotte nods and laughs lightly. "That does pose a problem."

Aiden mumbles, "To be completely unhelpful. I bet that the list would know if you were or not. Of course, that means trying it to find out."

Soleil says reasonably, "Well... look at who's left, Steven, if you don't."

Lotte pipes up, trying to keep any amusement out of her voice. "I think that if we are going to make Steven try, you all have to try."

Steven nods, smiling a little. He holds up one of the appropriate canisters and studies it thoughtfully. "Mmmm... I suppose, actually, that would could each try, and see what satisfies the list." Even as he's saying it, he's wincing at his choice of words.

Aiden coughs slightly. "Fair enough."

Steven glances wryly to Lotte, then looks at the container again. I'm supposed to be a monk of the Way of Lord Pelor. My focus is supposed to be on transcendental meditation and the discipline of the body. Man... what in the world am I supposed to think of in order to... you know....

Seodil gives them a flat look. It's distinctly uncooperative.

Lotte frowns at Seodil.

Steven stands and looks around at the flat silence, looking mildly uncomfortable. "Well, uhm... hmm. I'll... be back in a bit, I suppose. Er... right. Give me a bit." He then trots of in search of privacy and some sort of inspiration, though he has higher hopes of finding the former than the latter.

Seodil looks evenly at Lotte and says, "No."

Aiden looks over at Sol. "Maybe we should.. see about that one?" Now? Before I lose my nerve?

Lotte says curtly, "You'd better hope you're not interfering with the solution to that key."

Sol looks up from boiling her water in the glass jar, blinking. "Hmm? It's not ready quite yet..."

Aiden nods, "Alright." He looks over at what Soleil is doing, a little nervously.

Seodil says equally tartly, "The solution to that key has nothing to do with anything in my pants, Lotte."

Lotte sniffs and turns away from Seodil, studying the list again.

Aiden looks up at Lotte, "Any thoughts on the milk or corn? Steven and I are pretty sure that they're not what they appear."

Sol looks up. "I'm ready now, Aiden... want privacy for this?"

Aiden nods at Sol. "Yeah. I'd prefer."

Lotte shakes her head at Aiden's question, but continues to think on it.

Aiden stands up, leaving his pack behind. He walks over to Sol. "Ready when you are."

Lotte starts suddenly. "Seodil, do you think there is a farm nearby?"

Seodil tilts his head at Lotte and says, "That would explain the chickens."

Lotte asks, "Any chance we'd find milk and corn at a farm? It's worth a shot."

The silver elf nods, "We should ask the mage if she knows of a farm, or village. The idea seems sound to me."

Lotte stands and begins toward the tower.

The mage is indeed home when Lotte rings the doorbell. She beams up at Lotte from her 3.5 feet of height, out of a wrinkled brown face, and says "Yes, dumpling? You reconsider trading that pretty boy for what you want? He is dusty, but dust comes off." She's looking at Seodil, who came with Lotte.

Lotte hides a smile of delight at the thought of trading Seodil. "No, ma'am. I was wondering if there is a farm nearby?"

The mage Frangipani looks a little disappointed. "Oh. Well, yes. About three miles thataway, you start hitting Farmer Marron's cornfields." She waves off to the left.

Lotte nods and asks, "And is Farmer Marron friendly?"

The mage snorts. "Oh, yeh. Plenty, so long as you respect the dead. He's got a little temple, does cleric stuff for the village farther thataway. Funerals, weddings, that sort of thing."

Frangipani adds, "Anything else? Anybody else need piercing gear?" She waggles her eyebrows.

Lotte shakes her head. "No, that's all. Thank you!"

Lotte heads back to the site.

When Lotte returns to the site, the list has neatly crossed off "the semen of a righteous man" and "One drop of blood from a true and piercing love."

Lotte checks the list and feels slightly sorry for Steven, until she notices the second item crossed off and feels sorry for all of them.

Aiden walks back into camp, gingerly. He's moving a little stiffly. He sits down and sets a couple of jars into the bag with a slight wince. He glances down at the list and nods to himself. "Well. That's five."

Steven meanders back to the site about ten minutes later. He's slightly damp from a stream-water splash and has the pleasant, not at all uncomfortable air of someone who just came out of a very pleasant meditation. He doesn't seem as uncomfortable as he was when he left, though he does make a quiet, interested sound as he checks the list. The jar he had with him appears only briefly as he tucks it neatly away in the bag.

Soleil looks slightly distant, even a little foggy, as she nods greetings.

Lotte looks around at her companions with sympathy. "Is everyone ok? Because I think I know how to find a good number of our remaining items."

Aiden looks over at Lotte, interested. "Oh? How's that?"

Steven nods, smiling. "I'm fine, Lotte." he glances concernedly to Soleil and Aiden.

Lotte says, "Well, we did have chicken for dinner last night. And Frangipani said that there is a farmer nearby. A friendly farmer. Who is also a cleric for a nearby village, and presides over funerals."

Aiden nods, "Fine thanks." He says it entirely too fast to mean it.

Aiden grins, "Excellent."

Steven says, "Hmm... he might object to our taking the dead man's nail's. I don't suppose we could get metaphoric with that and say 'we're all going to die so we're essentially dead already' and see if it accepts that...?"

Soleil looks... dazed, still. Distracted. She nods, blinking to clear it a little. "Oh, splendid, Lotte.... hmm. Point, Steven..."

Aiden says, "Maybe a clipping would do, rather than the whole nail."

Steven hmms, and nods to Aiden's knife. "Let's see if it starts to accept it. it it starts to cross off, we're on the right track. But I agree with Lotte, we should go to him to see what he can do to help about the corn and milk.

Lotte shakes her head. "I don't know, Steven. Try it, I guess."

Aiden blinks, "Yellow as hair. Maybe it's not the corn itself but the strands inside the husk?"

Aiden nods at Steven and grabs the knife out, then takes the jar for the nail out of the bag. He uses the knife, carefully, to trim a clipping from one of his own nails, then puts it in the jar, watching the list carefully.

The list does not change.

Steven says, "Mmm.. guess we need someone who really is already dead, then....."

Aiden shakes his head, "Nope. He shakes the jar out behind him and puts it in the back in the bag. "Maybe it'll still accept a trimming rather than a full nail, though, as long as its from someone dead."

Lotte wrinkles her nose. "Why don't we just start with the milk and the corn."

Aiden nods, "I'd prefer to, yeah."

Steven nods in agreement.

Lotte asks, "Should we all go? Aiden, Sol, do you need to rest?"

Aiden shakes his head, "I'm quite alright to go on. We should probably all go together."

Steven nods, "I think if we can all go, we should all go.
