Giftings & Gaiety on a Merry Midwinter's

Quiet conversations as midnight approaches, conversations of mysteries and intrigues, of families and the roll of politics from Trundle to Sherman's Keep. Dandelion Koromov is exhausted, in her corner of the Eastern Gate Tavern, but it looks more like a normal weariness than one totally forced upon her by a poisoner's will. At the little table Garrick also sits with Brisa and Anuje, and a sleepy Romana very sensually draped in the younger Dayallan's arms. Outside there is nothing but stillness, broken only by folks walking in the back corridors and upstairs, those well enough to do so looking after their fallen comrades. Dominic and Benedict share their own drinks at a nearby table as Roxanna returns from her last check upon the sickened.

Benedict looks into his untouched drink, not even really sure what it is, tired and weary. All he can think about is the sight of Barris bearing down on him, darksteel axe out, his intonation of "jackal" loud in his ears... and some hapless infantryman who put himself between the priest and Barris -- and nearly got killed for it...

Brisa looks up at Roxanna as she returns and smiles, "Roxy-varishch, I have something for you also... although to be fair it is as much from captain Garrick as I." She proffers the second darksteel knotwork bracelet, sheening darkly blueblack, to Roxanna, and adds quietly, "May your Midwinter's only get better, varishch."

Anuje tilts her head at Brisa. "Where are you keeping all your gifts? Mine are still back at our rooms."

Roxanna shakes her head sadly, looking even more worn now that she has used up her major spells. "I don't think we'll lose more than a couple troopers... but this is not how I had hoped to spend Midwinter's." She smiles at the gift. "Spasebo. I would hope it can't get any worse."

Benedict blinks, looking up at the mention of gifts. Brisa grins at Anuje, "Well... these two I had on already, remember?"

Anuje says, "Sure... got any more hidden on you?" She grins.

Romana manages to lift her head, extending one long arm in Roxanna's direction, where a similar bangle happily loops her wrist. "Romanas one have too!"

Leaning back in her corner, Captain Koromov lets pout a long breath. "Neither do any of us Lady Roxanna... but it is not today I fear, as tomorrow and the next few."

Roxanna nods. "And very attractive it looks on you, apprentice. You did very well tonight, you know." She looks to the captain. "A challenge to you after this cowardly attack, you think?" Anuje mms, thinking quietly. Is that armor too big for the Dayallan captain here? Is it magical?

Brisa quietly runs a soothing hand down Romana's dark hair spilling down her back, and nods, smiling, "I am thinking we all deserve to sleep late after today -- especially Roxy and Romishkhhyra." She's silent for a moment, then adds curiously, "I am also thinking I would like to talk to the Rom, after I've exercised the horses... I've been wondering what happened to the youngest Korie. What horrible luck for the poor family, having the youngest die just as the eldest is getting married! Admittedly, I don't like political marriages, but still..." She sighs, then wonders, "What was the brother's name again? -and the girl?"

Dandelion just looks across the room. To Brisa. Then she quietly drawls to no one in particular. "I'm just a simple country girl. But if I was more savvy, I think I would ask how many crowns I could get to keep my mouth shut." She chuckles and looks across to Captain Garrick. "I've been keeping Jake's company a bit too long, haven't I."

Brisa gives Dandelion a perplexed look, "Pardon, Verchovai?" then ahs! "I remember... Marcus Korie... and the girl was Talia. And the boy that died was um... the youngest one..."

Romana looks back to Roxanna and blinks, then she smiles very brightly, " Panca... oh! Thank you!" She then hugs Brisa again, whispering proudly into her companion's ear, "Romanas did goods!" Anuje smiles at Romana.

Brisa chuckles softly and hugs Romana warmly, "That you did, babochka. I think you do everything you do with your whole heart." She smiles quietly, her face aglow with happiness again.

Anuje says, "We could do with a little cheer, I think."

The little rogue stands and, carefully brushing out his tunics, his eyes sparkle. With each word he takes a step towards the door, each one somehow faster than the last, "Well, I should be going. And you know, in my village things are so small we don't have time for long goo..." And in a twinkling, at least for tonight, the little brigand is gone!

Anuje blinks as Dominic steps out, half-rising to say something. She sighs and sits back down heavily. "I hope he comes for gifting. I have something for him."

Brisa gives Dandelion a curious look over Romana's shoulder, "Who would you be asking to be quiet, Verchovai, about the Kories? It's not like dama Talia or Marcus or Domi-" she goes still for a moment, her mouth still open. Her eyes widen... then her head whips around to stare at the door, "No! He wouldn't have..." she blinks, then adds curiously, "-would he?" She thinks a moment... then her eyes widen again incredulously, a delighted grin crosses her face -- and she tosses her head back in laughter!

Anuje stares at Brisa a moment. "Uhm... what's so funny?"

Roxanna says, "Bozhemoi... you think?"

Brisa takes a while to calm down... she laughs so hard there're tears coming from her eyes! and breathlessly gasps, "What- what's the name of the 'deceased' youngest Korie, Anuje?! Smallest village -- my tail!" She giggles, glancing at Dandelion, "You knew!"

Dandelion looks to the ceiling for a moment, softly smiling. Her eyes sparkle a bit, nodding to Brisa and confirming her conclusion.

Roxanna says, "It's probably not Dominic. I suspect that's an assumed name."

Anuje glances between Roxanna and Brisa. "Uhm... you're kidding, right?"

Brisa grins at Roxanna, "Oh? What about the elder brother he doesn't like? What about that the captain here knew him -- and asked if he was slumming?"

Roxanna winks at Brisa. "Oh, it's him, all right. But I think he's going under a new name."

Brisa giggles delightedly, leaning her face against Romana's hair, only her mischievous eyes showing! She murmurs, "That is SO funny!"

Romana quietly whispers in Brisa's ear, "Sneakies..." Brisa grins and nods, her eyes still dancing, at Romana's words. Anuje stares at the door. Was that just a story he told me about not liking his brother?

Brisa gets a curious look then, staring at Dandelion, "You knew him... but you couldn't possibly have gone there as the leader of the Wild Horde... you must have gone..." her eyes widen again, "Ooh... you must have been the spokeswoman for the Allaines?!" She looks quite impressed!

Benedict blinks in surprise. "Dominic...? Oh, my..."

Brisa looks more thoughtful, "And that would mean... hmm... would mean either the father is as angry as the eldest son... or alternatively, that Marcus Korie is calling the shots in Talantal!"

Garrick looks between everyone, his own eyes growing a bit wider. "Are you saying we've had both Imperials and Nobles in this bar? Well I'll be a Grand Knight Marshall on the Archipelago..."

Benedict rubs his head, giving a sort of half-frown. He's starting to feel a bit light-headed from the webs being spun, and how they're being revealed to them. Brisa murmurs thoughtfully to herself, "Interesting..." then grins at Garrick, "Well, it would be polite not to mention it, da? -anymore than we need to mention um... how many Easterners there are in town?"

Anuje shakes her head. "Defrocked... but yeah... and I've been with him for days and wouldn't even have guessed."

Brisa nods to Anuje, "Me either, kisa... it was just that the names and the circumstances were TOO perfect!"

Dandelion Koromov nods, "Actually it was while I was with the Horde, but we were spending the summer training in Highgaard, and I had to go pick up Frederick anywise. It was on the way. And of the whole family only that rapscallion was any fun."

Anuje glances at Brisa and bumps her ankle with her own foot, lifting an eyebrow. Brisa blinks a little guiltily at Anuje, then abruptly pays close attention to Dandelion's words! Both Garrick and Dandelion exchange a quiet glance, as Brisa mentions the Korie heir. Meanwhile, outside, the rain begins again. Brisa raises an eyebrow, then nods ruefully, "So it is the eldest son calling the shots?"

It is Garrick who answers Brisa. "I hope not. The elder Korie, for all of his conservatism, used to be at least predictable, even handed, and patient. He had grown old and rich and didn't see any reason to do anything to risk that. Methinks young Marcus hasn't gotten to that point yet."

Brisa looks out the window and sighs in soft amusement, "Well, at least this time the rain didn't start as Domi arrived... but rather after he left..." Her voice trails off a little puzzledly.

Anuje stands and walks over to the door, glancing up at the sky. "We're gonna be soaked if we go back now, but I'd like to give my friends their gifts."

Benedict blinks, glancing to Anuje. "Oh! After all that happened, I'd almost forgotten..."

Romana looks out into the dark and frowns. "Everyones wants to make Romanas alls wet."

Brisa looks curiously at Dandelion, "How well do you know Domi, Verchovai?" then blinks and laughs softly at Romana's comment.

Anuje glances back at Romana and smiles. "Who wouldn't want to see a beautiful wet girl?" She grins. Brisa blinks, thinking about that statement... then covers a grin, her eyes dancing with mischief again as she glances at Romana!

Roxanna rolls her eyes at Anuje. "You'd be surprised, actually." Anuje smirks.

Dandelion considers. "Well enough to know that he's the only trustable and decent member of his family, save for perhaps one of his brothers -- the one with a limp who they keep locked up in a sickbed."

Benedict blinks. "Locked up in a sickbed? For only a limp?" Anuje frowns and looks at Dandelion, nodding at Benedict's words.

Roxanna says, "Trustable? Dominic? Must not be a very nice family."

Brisa frowns thoughtfully, "I wonder... I wonder why the women don't just... leave..." She glances over at Anuje, "How badly was Daria hurt, Anuje? Badly enough that we might want to give her a lift to the Dragonstooth tomorrow, after Roxy's had enough sleep?

Anuje glances at Roxanna. "He hasn't done anything unworthy of our trust, Lady."

Dandelion lets out a small sigh, shrugging her shoulders, "The lad can barely walk. Dominic took care of him while he could."

Brisa shakes her head slowly, "Poor lad. Poor girl, too, stuck in a political marriage with someone like Marcus Korie."

Anuje blinks. "Daria? Uhm... she's limping. I don't know how much pain, though."

Brisa nods at Anuje's words about Dominic, "True..." then nods again at her words about Daria, "Then we can certainly give her a lift on Khari."

Anuje thinks a moment and shakes her head. "I don't think you should. She's nervous enough about getting near the Dragonstooth. She doesn't feel welcome there. I could fetch her. She probably wouldn't be nervous about that. And my steed is a bit smaller, too."

Brisa glances at Dandelion, "Verchovai, when would you like to go consecrate the temple? I am thinking you might want to sleep late also tomorrow?" then gives Anuje a curious glance, "But... if she's wounded, Anuje... why make her suffer needlessly? At the very least... ah..." She thinks about it... then sighs and shrugs, "Whatever."

Benedict sighs softly, and nods to Dandelion, then looks to Brisa. "I'd agree. Best to get Daria far from there..." And far from that lord... and from Mordyn, as well... He still can't help but shiver at the thought of how close he had been to one of Jagnar's daughters. He's so far learned enough about the other cults and beliefs in the Heartwood that he wouldn't put so much trust in what the average Imperial believes in them -- meeting Lady Kara was enough for that, almost. But even if Jagnar wasn't officially of the Imperial Court, Mordyn's possible involvement with the events at the Eastern Gate tavern...

Anuje smiles. "And besides. You're a legend. She might be intimidated." She hmms to Benedict. "Much as I agree, she seems to be unlikely to accept much help at face value, expecting we want something in return." Benedict nods quietly to Anuje.

Dandelion quietly nods. "It might be a handful before I can, Brisa. First to get better, and second not to accidentally let Michael tear us apart while we are down. Some of the epithets yelled this night cut deeper than any sword."

Brisa gives Anuje a quizzically amused glance, but doesn't say anything, just nods to Dandelion. Roxanna says, "You were sick and poisoned. Not your fault, any of you. Shall I talk to your people and assure them of that?"

Brisa says, "Take your time then, Verchovai... and please, call me if I can help." She pauses, thinking a bit... then rises, "I... will look in on Kori one last time, I think. I will return soon, da?" Benedict nods quietly to Brisa as she gets up. Anuje leans against the doorjamb, turning to look out at the dark sky.

Brisa will pace quietly to Kori's room, then peek in silently to see if she's asleep and/or alone? The Fireball's room is very, very quiet. But there is no way to see her. For both Duffy and Jason bar her door. Duffy smiles, "She's asleep Dama Brisa..." To which Jason continues, "Whether she wants to be or not." Brisa nods to the two men, her expression troubled, then just paces quietly back into the commons.

Dandelion looks back at Roxanna, slowly shaking her head. "That won't take back the words that were said. Nor that in the end one of our own... took down one of our own. Whoever did this was not only cruel, Lady Roxanna... but also very cunning." Closing her eyes, the Horde's Captain leaned back against the wall. Tomorrow she would have to play the role of hero-captain of the Horde and tie together sundered strings... on half a night's sleep.

Roxanna sighs. "I was afraid that might be the case, Captain. But if I can help, don't hesitate to ask me." And last, Anuje looks out to the stormseason rain.

And yes, everyone in the Dragonstooth appreciates the thoroughly soaked Romana as they returned to their rooms. Romana just smiles back philosophically, then flounces a wet trail down to their rooms, gladly holding Brisa's hand. It's not much longer later before the little group is retired in their rooms. Romana is but a pretty face happily sitting in the middle of bed, wrapped all comfy up in her furs. A pair of sconces scatters bright yellow light across the room... certainly much, much nicer than the last room Anuje had visited.

    Bordertown: Dragonstooth Tavern Room
Down a set of stairs, down a small hall, and the polished wood door to the room opens... inside it is as rich as the commons above. Wood floor and paneled walls. A diamond paned window opening to the court; a casement too, already half open to let in the fresh air. A small padded couch and a wooden chair are set next to a wooden trunk, and atop the table a pitcher of water and a basin. Dominating the wall beneath the window is a four poster bed. It has a quilted comforter and two pillows.

Anuje has changed herself, wearing something more comfortable for lounging, but still dressed male in case Dominic shows up. Brisa grins cheerfully at Romana, all snugged up in furs, "You are looking like a baby bird all fluffed up in the nest, mishkhhyra... but if you open your mouth I won't pop in a worm, da?" Anuje smirks.

Brisa has also changed clothes, wearing something warm and dry. She's carefully put all the flowers from this morning, that were woven into her and Romana's hair, into a small pot with water in it. She looks around the cozy room, then grins cheerfully again, "So! Giftings now, da?" Anuje gets a saddlebag from the corner and kneels down next to it, smiling to herself. Brisa grins, "You want to go first, kisa?"

Romana just looks around, and then she shyly smiles. Reaching under her pillow, she pushes a small box across the blankets in Brisa's direction. Brisa blinks interestedly -- then beams happily at Romana as she accepts the box! Benedict slips out for a moment, going to the room next door, then returns with a small bundle wrapped in his other robe. Anuje smiles. She pulls out a small cloth bag, died violet and drawn closed at the top. She stands and crosses to Roxanna, handing it to her.

Brisa looks a little sheepish, "I am very sorry... I did not know how to wrap mine very well. Still... Roxy-varishch, for you..." Brisa reaches under the bed, tugging out something large and bulky, then carefully placing it in Roxanna's lap. It smells pleasantly of new leather. "-it is big... but useful, I hope? I hope also you are liking it... it's a nice, new, padded sidesaddle! Those are far more comfortable to ride on long distance for people who are new to riding."

Romana's eyes beam, sparkling like light upon a clear mountain lake at Brisa. And when the little box is opened there is a set of perfect silver earrings -- earrings in the shape of glittering stars -- stars as bright as those that dance in the night sky high above, and here in Romana's eyes.

Roxanna smiles at Anuje. "What have we got in here?" She starts to unwrap the gift... then holds up a crystal bottle with yellow fluid inside. "Is this what I think it is?" She opens the stopper and takes a sniff. "Thank you, Anuje... I've never had perfume before."

Anuje smiles broadly. "Me neither. I thought it smelled very good, though." Anuje realizes how silly that sounds against her pretense and quickly returns to kneeling by her saddlebag.

Brisa blinks startledly at the earrings... then looks up at Romana in astonishment, "Slatke, these are- these are... so fine...!" She blinks again, a little uncertainly, "...for me...?" She wonders a bit confusedly if she can even wear jewelry... then grins at herself -- it can't be that difficult -- women do that all the time!

Romana just smiles, "Brisa pretty... should have pretty things too..." She ducks her head, smiling softly, "Especially if bangles say whose Lady watches you, yes?"

Brisa beams at Romana and hugs her tightly, "I... I've never worn jewelry before, babochka... um... if you'll show me how though... I... it can't be that hard, da?"

Romana just hugs Brisa back, tight and warm, "No, not hard at..." And then she laughs quietly, "Though Roxyanna must put holes in ears for you first, yes?" Romana smiles, "Well worth the hurt, for a heartbeat. Brisa will like, Romanas hope."

Roxanna says, "As long as you're not allergic to the metal..." She grins at Brisa. "And thank you for the saddle. I've been trying to practice riding, and I think I'm getting the hang of it."

Brisa grins at Roxanna, "Am glad you like it, Roxy-varishch! I can show you how to arrange skirts tomorrow if you are wishing?" She grins sympathetically at Benedict and Anuje, "Would have gotten for you too but... men do not use. Would look wrong." Instead she hands Benedict a small wrapped package.

Anuje nods. "I've always thought it would make more sense for men to ride sidesaddle, though..." Benedict looks to Anuje, and then blinks and laughs softly.

Roxanna says, "Now let's see..." She pulls out some packages of her own. "For you, Brisa... and one for Romana... and one for Anuje.. and one for Benedict." She giggles at Anuje. "Good point."

Brisa kisses Romana lightly on the forehead and murmurs solemnly (although her eyes are dancing with delight!), "Cannot think of anyone else I would prefer to have holes in my head for, babochka...!" Romana's eyes cross slightly, as she untangles exactly what Brisa just spoke. Brisa giggles softly at Romana's reaction!

There is a light knock knock knock upon the door. Roxanna looks toward the door. "Who is it?"

Anuje takes out a small cloth, likely wrapped around something. She crosses and lays it on the bed in front of Romana. She grins, "I hope you like it."

From out side the room comes a soft voice, "There be ah laddie named Anuje in there, please?"

Brisa grins a happy thank you to Roxanna's package as she tilts her head, listening to hear who's at the door... her package may have to wait, she suspects, if they're about to have company. She raises an eyebrow, then calls warily, "Who asks for him?"

Anuje blinks and glances at the door and the others in the room, shrugging. She nods her thanks to Roxanna as she takes her gift, but still watches the door. "Uhm... I'll get it, since I'm up."

Brisa sighs softly, internally, hoping her realization earlier hasn't driven Dominic away. She'll be disappointed if so... not only because she'd trusted him with extremely sensitive information... but mostly because it will hurt Anuje. She murmurs softly, "Kisa... would you like one of us to take it?"

Benedict blinks, looking to the door? Roxanna says, "Might be better to do it that way. I'll answer the door." Brisa nods, and quietly sets her package aside so her hands are free.

With fierce determination Romana unwraps Anuje's gift, intent as a merebeast stalking fluff. Within is a bracelet of finely wrought silver with intricate and delicate weavings. Romana almost bounces off the bed to hug Anuje. Her eyes dance as the bracelet immediately is slipped over her wrist. "So pretties... and so special, from friends, yes?" She holds her hand and wrist in front of Brisa, "Look! So pretty!"

Anuje smiles at the hug, hugging back. Roxanna gets up and walks over to the door, opening it just a little with her foot behind it in case someone wants to push it open. Brisa smiles at Romana, although most of her attention is on Roxy at the door. From the hall comes the soft voice, "I be Karen... an' a master Dominic said I'd be a'findin' a laddie named Anuje 'ere?"

Anuje blinks and glances at the door. "Uhm. Where is he?"

Brisa blinks... then her eyes widen slightly -- Dominic wouldn't... would he?! She bites her lip to contain laughter. Roxanna mouths back to Brisa, "I hope she's not supposed to be a gift..."

Brisa almost loses it at that! She rises hastily, still grinning, and paces over to the door, to look over Roxanna's head, "Do you have a message for him, lass?"

Roxanna opens the door a little wider, since the name at least indicates some bona fides, and looks to see who is there. Anuje misses the exchange, setting Roxanna's gift for her down carefully on the edge of the bed. From a bit further away a more familiar voice laughs, "Tcha, little one, open the bloody door. My brother even has more manners than that!" Brisa laughs for real this time!

Roxanna opens it then. "Dominic, you are a scamp. And you know very well we have reason to be a bit suspicious."

Brisa's voice is full of barely restrained laughter, "Open the door further? But why? Surely in such a small village... you had to share the one very small door?!" Benedict blinks, then laughs softly, shaking his head.

Anuje grins. "Hey, Dominic. I thought you might not show. I have a gift for you."

Brisa grins, heading back to sit next to Romana on the bed, still giggling softly to herself! Anuje glances at Brisa and Benedict and then back to the girl at the door. Brisa grins at Anuje and whispers, while Dominic's still outside, "I'll only give part of your gift to you tonight, da, kisa?"

Anuje blinks at Brisa and then smiles. "Oh... uhm. Thank you." Brisa smiles and nods, then sits back and picks up the package from Roxanna again, opening it with careful curiosity.

Dominic is further down the hall, leaning in the shadows with a smile. At the door is a young lass, no more than sixteen or seventeen summers, maybe the lad Anuje's age. She has short, dark hair and a sturdy but plainly pretty build -- the daughter of the farmer just down the path. Soft brown eyes blink and she smiles as she looks in and spies Anuje, as if perhaps she had been told of him. "Master Anuje? Master Dominic says you are a nice laddie, an' 'e 'elped me father out when we were really on 'ard times... an' 'e said ye were a good laddie... so if'n ye wish, I'd be 'appy to keep ye company till sunup an' such, because no one should be alone on Midwinter's..." Then she blushes, realizing what she just said. "Even... even if it's just eating a bit of stew together or something?"

Brisa hastily looks down at her hands, still grinning... she thinks that's very sweet! Then she blinks at a sudden thought, and rises to look out the window... can she see stars? Has the rain stopped? Outside, high above, the stars sparkle as the clouds begin to clear away. Brisa smiles... she knew somehow that would be the case... she returns to her seat next to Romana and hugs her happily, then grins and winks at Anuje!

Anuje starts and stares, a bit too long to be proper, before stammering, "Uhm... uh... yeah. Uh... that's very kind of hi- of you..." She smiles nervously and wipes a hand on her tunic, then offers it, glancing at the others.

Brisa calls out, "Master Dominic, you're welcome to come join us if you'd like?" Benedict just blinks in surprise. Something in him is starting to see the world upside-down. Not so long ago -- less than a night? -- he was about to get cleft by Barris; now he's seeing more hilarity and light-hearted humor than in the past week. The theologian in him wonders if this is a lesson, while the rest of him, the young man from Talantal, tries not to go hysterical in confusion.

Very shyly Karen takes Anuje's hand. It is small and warm and she seems just as nervous as... he? -but she comes in and sits down next to Anuje, "These are all your friends? You are a lucky laddie."

Brisa grins cheerfully at the girl, "Welcome, dama Karen!" She glances at the door, then laughs. "Eh, Domi, if you won't come in at least bring up some drinks and nibbles, da?"

Anuje swallows and nods quickly. "Uhm... this is Roxanna, and Romana, and Brisa, and that's Benedict." Her eyes light up as she looks at Benedict. "Benedict is very knowledgeable and well-traveled."

Romana blinks as she unfolds a gorgeous tunic -- robes of soft white wrapped about a small kit of bandages and salves. She blinks, her mouth opening, "Alreadys? You will teach Romanas! Oh Roxyanna... how can I thank? First step down new road?"

Roxanna smiles. "Romana, you took the first step tonight and did it with flying colors. This merely makes it official."

Brisa tilts her head and grins at Anuje... then has to cover a grin at that rather visible ploy on Anuje's part! She blinks at Romana's gift... then beams proudly at her.

Benedict blinks at Anuje's praise, and finds his voice. "Erm... ah, pleased to meet you, miss. Though I'm not nearly as well-traveled as the others who are here, I assure you!"

Romana just ducks her head and smiles, "Romana... thank you, Roxanna."

From the hall Dominic laughs, "Now don't be getting the lad drunk on his first date, lassie... I'll be right back."

Anuje blushes a little at Dominic's comment. She picks up Roxanna's gift quickly and starts unwrapping it. "You caught us at gifting, uh... Karen."

Karen smiles, still happily holding Anuje's hand. She smiles, "I be Karen Lilasdotter, and we have a farm just an eve's ride from the town; Ma and Fa an' my folks. Raise foods an' 'erbs for tha merchanters."

Brisa sighs happily at Romana's excitement... then finally opens the box from Roxanna. It's a moderately small package, but inside, uncurling and glittering in the candlelight, is a swordbelt that matched Khari's new bridle. Brisa's eyes widen, and her mouth forms a small 'o' of astonishment... then she laughs and bounces up to hug Roxanna delightedly! "Roxy-varishch! Bozhemoi! It is beautiful!"

Anuje nods working at the wrappings on the gift. "That's a fair ride on a night like this... did Dominic go all that way to bring you to meet me?" She tries to keep the incredulity from her voice.

Karen nods, "He's a nice friend of Fa's, so it's no trouble. And this is nice. I never been in the Dragonstooth before."

Romana looks up from beneath her blanket to smile to Roxanna. She points to the small wooden box on the table. Perhaps two hands tall it is, and a hand and a half wide, but not tall. "For you, Roxyanna."

With a bucket of wine and a basket of bread and cheese, Dominic returns. He pushes open the door, setting down drink and feast. "And has it been a good Midwinter's?"

Brisa grins at Dominic from where she's gleefully (but also carefully!) hugging Roxanna, "Oh, da, it has been quite lovely so far!"

Anuje nods at Dominic. "A very interesting one." She squeezes Karen's hand reassuredly with her own sweaty one and unwraps the final wrap on her gift from Roxanna. She grins broadly as she reveals a fine pair of boots, suitable for riding. "Thank you very much, Lady Roxanna."

Romana smiles, and gently hugs Brisa. Sapphire eyes shine so bright, as she says to her companion, "Reach under the beds, Brish'khhya." Romana just blinks at Roxanna's gift to Anuje... the she takes a closer look, and lets out a long, long sigh.

Roxanna sighs at Romana's gift and at Benedict's. "I thank you both, my friends... but I'm afraid I will have to ask your indulgence for a bit of further help. I... umm... I never learned to read, growing up in the Alley." She looks dreadfully embarrassed. "Could you teach me?"

Brisa smiles at Karen as she steps carefully over people to get back to her seat, "Domi's nice, da..." As she goes she leans over to whisper softly, only to Anuje, "Why not offer her one of the flowers, as a Midwinter's gift from you?" Then she reaches under the bed, as directed to by Romana. Her muffled voice drifts out from under the bed, "Why sound embarrassed, Roxy-varishch? I can't read either... colonial or..." There's a moment of silence, then a soft, "Ooooooooh..."

Anuje blinks and follows Brisa with her eyes as she passes, looking over her shoulder. She nods quickly and extracts her hand gently from Karen's. "Excuse me, miss. Don't go anywhere." She moves quickly to her saddlebag. She takes out soft-leather, brick-shaped object and walks over to Brisa. She leans across and hands it to her, reaching for a flower at the same time. She smiles to Karen as she sits and pulls a flower from behind her back to hand to the girl. "For you."

Benedict blinks to Roxanna. "Oh! I'm not much of a teacher, Roxanna, but I'd be glad to help, surely."

Brisa backs out from under the bed, holding up a beautiful, heavy riding cloak, dark as night; Highgaard make -- the warmest anywhere to be found -- and specially made with the softest of merebeast fur for its trim and hood. Her eyes are bright with happiness as she admires it, then grins at Romana, "Bozhemoi... spacebo, serdzhemoi."

Romana laughs, blushing profusely. "Only trues, since Brisa's cloak now Romanas..."

Brisa laughs softly, "We will share, babochka, da?"

Roxanna smiles at Romana a bit shamefacedly. "What is written here?"

Benedict unwraps the package that Brisa proffers, curiosity nibbling at him. Inside the small package is a book, of size enough to carry on one's belt while travelling, but it has an oiled and weather-sealed leather cover and straps, keeping the paper within safe from rain. Within, beside the blank white pages, are small leather loops -- one holding a pen, the other a small stone jar or vial for ink. Then he glances at the same time to the gift Romana gave Roxanna, and his eyes widen perceptibly. "Oh, my..."

Brisa grins again to Romana, "Shall I pull out the other as well? I am guessing by the heavy sigh who they are for... but I will remind you that riding boots are not made for walking, so your gift will be gladly accepted too, I am thinking?" At Benedict's comment Brisa glances curiously over her shoulder, "What is it, Benny?"

Benedict proceeds to unwrap Roxanna's gift to him, revealing a fine writing set of normal-sized proportions, with inks and pens and fine paper. He smiles widely, enthused. "Oh, wonderful! A journal... and a set for all those maps I keep meaning to make at some point... perhaps now this'll keep me from getting lost!"

Karen's eyes light up as she is given the flower. Smiling, she slips it into her hair. As she does, Dominic smiles. The farm girl looks back and squeezes Anuje's hand. "Denka, master Anuje. It's verra pretty, it is."

Brisa grins affectionately over at the slightly flustered looking Anuje, and gently urges, "Tell her where it's from, Anuje, da?"

Anuje gives Brisa a look over Karen's shoulder and then looks back at the girl, smiling. "Uhm... these were picked on the Flowered Path. Have you heard of that?" Brisa grins unrepentantly at Anuje's look, giving her another cheerful wink!

Benedict erps and grins over to Anuje, proffering a medium-sized package to her. "I do hope you like this -- it's, ah, Midwinter's, but I hope there'll be times for you to use it." He moves on to Dominic, presenting him with a smaller package wrapped in dark blue and tied off with colorful cord, with a slightly embarrassed grin. Benedict finally, gingerly, hands Romana a smaller package, beribboned and finely-wrapped with white cloth. He looks to Brisa, grinning softly, "That's a wonderful cloak, Brisa! It'll certainly keep you warm. And I think I should let Romana explain what her gift was... er, what her gift to Roxanna is, that is..."

Anuje opens Benedict's gift and lifts out a pair of tunics. One is a soft, thick undertunic for winter, and the other is a dark maroon overtunic of fine quality. She grins brightly and looks at Benedict. "Thank you! I could use some more clothes for this winter."

Benedict looks relieved at Anuje's smile. "You're very welcome! I'm glad you like it!"

"The Flowered Path... oh, that's sweet. We went there once, after tha spring plantin'. Like a picnic, to celebrate for a two day. It's verra pretty; I still remember it. Thank you." And then, Karen very softly leans over and kisses Anuje's cheek.

Anuje starts and blushes, blinking in surprise at the kiss. She glances at Karen and smiles, a bit lopsidedly. "Uhm... you're welcome..."

Brisa grins at Benedict, "I am thinking next time we must compare notes more, da?" She laughs, then sets a neatly folded, sturdy, dark blue men's tunic -- with a decidedly masculine trim -- in Anuje's lap. "Hope this is of use to you, Anuje!" Over that she lays out the Romany dagger, "This also I will offer to you, Anuje-varishch, since you are now knowing how to use a dagger. It may make people look at you strangely, that you carry a Rom dagger... so I am offering only. If you do not wish it I will understand." She smiles quietly, waiting for Anuje to make her choice.

Dominic whistles quietly at Brisa's gift to Anuje. "Kor, laddie... that's a gift to end all gifts on a Midwinter's..."

Romana looks down from the bed, to look upon Anuje with a smile. She points to the bed. "Something sneaky is hiding beneath beds for Anuje, yes?" Then she smiles to the Brother Hastur, "But... it's better when surprise, not just told by giver. What if Romanas not here; would Benedict not reads for Roxyannas?

Roxanna smiles at Romana and at Benedict. "I'm sure he would. But I really should learn how to do that myself."

Brisa gives Dominic a puzzled look, "It is inappropriate?"

Anuje blinks and smiles, glancing at Brisa and carefully picking up the dagger and feeling its balance. "Brisa... thank you." Her blush has lessened a bit, but hasn't completely departed.

Brisa smiles at Anuje, "Am glad you are liking, varishch."

Dominic looks to Brisa and smiles, "Oh no! Not at all. Got one for me?"

Brisa laughs! then grins at Dominic, "Nyeh, silly one... but I will keep you in mind if I continue this... flourishing market in daggers, da?" She grins, her eyes dancing... then opens her small, leather-wrapped gift from Anuje, revealing a sharpening stone and a vial of oil in a pocket on the side. She brightens, "Ooh! Always good to have a nice, new sharpening stone!" She grins and gives Anuje a cheerful hug, "Spacebo, Anuje-varishch!"

Benedict grins softly to Romana, and nods, "Good point, Romana. The book, Roxanna, is-" He doesn't quite look over at Karen, and doesn't quite make the catch of his words obvious, "-a catalog of herbs and drugs in this... general region." How to say that it's a book of drugs, herbs, and poisons of the East, in front of Karen? He thinks fast, and tries not to trip.

Roxanna nods at Benedict, understanding what is unspoken. "I see. Very useful, yes?"

Benedict nodnods, "Indeed it is, and probably fascinating!"

Brisa looks up at Benedict and smiles, also realizing his discomfort, "I am thinking medicinal herbs are always good to know. Maybe Roxy-varishch will be letting me see also, for things for animals, da?"

Anuje smiles and looks at Dominic, gesturing to her saddlebag. "The item on top is for you, Dom. Be careful." She carefully sets the tunics on the bed next to her.

Brisa opens finally a small box from Benedict... and her eyes widen again, "Ooh... so many fine things today... I have never seen so many!" She holds up a small pendant, in the shape of a unicorn's silhouette against the stars. The intricate details wink silver in the candlelight as it turns slowly on the end of the thong. Brisa beams at Benedict, "Is beautiful, Benny-varishch... spacebo!" She grins, giving him a quick, tight hug and giggling softly when he blushes!

Benedict grins softly, then blinking and indeed blushing with the hug. "I'm glad you like it! Uhm, I tried to find one that looked like a unicorn as you described it. Not many people have seen them around here, after all..."

Anuje grins at Karen as she stands up again. "Pardon me, miss." She walks over to her saddlebag again and draws out a rolled up piece of soft leather. "I'll get yours while I'm here, Dominic." She takes out another dagger, this one not quite the extraordinary one that Brisa'd given her. "Here, Dom. It's not quite as flashy, but it's had the honor of being used... in self-defense, of course."

Brisa beams happily at Benedict, "Is wonderful, Benny-varishch... and I will show you one someday, when we meet Verchovai Poppy, da?" She'll sit back down by Romana, looking a little delightedly bemused at the plethora of gifts. She puts an arm around Romana and sighs happily... "This is... nicest Midwinter's I have had since I was child... I am so happy we are all here, safe, to share now. Bol'shoye spacebo, to all of you? -and Khari also says spacebo!" Romana slips her hands beneath the pillows, and then checks them very carefully. Once satisfied, she hands a small cloth wrapped package to Benedict -- small but heavy.

Dominic smiles and takes the dagger, "Why, thank you, laddie... one day you will have to tell me the tale of the dagger's defense."

Roxanna leans back and smiles. "It has been an eventful year, hasn't it?" Brisa smiles and nods at Roxanna.

Benedict blinks, accepting the small package. He hefts it slightly, then opens it curiously, revealing a small, heavy vial of ink. He looks up, grinning to Romana. "There's nothing like more ink to an Eye! Thank you, Romana!"

Romana smiles to Benedict, eyes bright. "Inks, Benedicts... rainproofs."

Brisa giggles at Benedict's comment about ink and eyes, then raises an eyebrow at hearing it's waterproof, "That is nice!" Then she grins and leans over to whisper softly to Romana, "One more small gift have I for you, serdzhemoi... but I will wait for later, da?"

Romana just smiles, "Romanas already has what Romanas wish. " And with that she reaches out to just hold Brisa's hand. Brisa grins, blushing slightly but happily holding Romana's hand.

Roxanna grins and pulls out her balalaika, "Said the monkey to the owl... oh, what'll you have to drink..." Brisa laughs at Roxanna's song! Roxanna sings, the second time as low as she can go, "Said the monkey to the owl, oh what'll you have to drink..." The third time the line climbs into the upper register, "Said the monkey to the owl, o-oh, what'll you have to drink..." Roxanna grins and finishes the silly little ditty with a different voice entirely, "Why, since you are so very kind, I'll have a bottle of ink!" Brisa laughs again, clapping her hands! Benedict laughs to the song, applauding as well.

Anuje smiles to Roxanna. "Where do you learn all these songs?"

Roxanna grins at Anuje. "You just listen when you hear folks singing, and remember them."

Dominic just sits back, leaning against the bed. If anyone cares to look, his cloak is now bound by a stylish clasp of the smaller moon rising over a town's rooftops, all done in grays and deep maroons. Anuje grins and nods to Dominic. She turns to hand the leather roll to Benedict. "There ya go."

Benedict blinks to Brisa and smiles, "I'd love the opportunity to see one, Brisa, thank you!" At Romana's words Benedict oh!s, looking at the vial with even more interest and respect. "Oh, my...! That'll come in very useful, thank you!" He accepts the roll from Anuje with another smile... and when he unrolls it, his eyes widen. "A map! Oh, this is wonderful, Anuje, thank you very, very much! A map of this area..."

Brisa grins at Dominic, then nods to the clasp, "Very stylish, gospodin!"

"Thank the Brother, Brisa," is Dominic's bright response. Brisa pauses for a moment, regarding Dominic thoughtfully... then smiles. He's probably seen far grander Midwinter's... and yet... well... she hopes he's enjoying this one. The giftings might be far smaller, but she knows her gifts to her friends, and probably theirs as well, were all given from the heart.

Benedict grins and stands, "Excuse me for just one moment. I've one more gift... two more, actually." He grins and inclines his head to Dominic as he slips into the room next door for a moment.

Karen nibbles on some cheese, every now and then just leaning quietly upon Anuje... Romana slips down, so she can place her head so lightly in Brisa's lap... while Dominic smiles, looking back at Brisa's thoughtful gaze. "Midwinter's should never be so big it can't fit in one room."

Benedict pokes his head in the doorway, a beribboned basket in hand. The basket has the rich scent of apples, cinnamon, and sugar. "I hope these aren't bad for the horses, Brisa? Apple slices covered in cinnamon and sugar. And I hope I got enough for them all..."

Brisa smiles quietly as Romana curls up against her, then with careful hands lightly strokes her soft hair... she looks up at Dominic and smiles again, quietly, "I think so, da, gospodin Dominic..." When Benedict re-enters the room she laughs, "Bozhemoi! You will cause a stampede of greed for sure, Benny-varishch!" She adds delightedly, "They are wonderful -- they will love them, I am sure!"

Anuje glances to Romana. "What were you saying about the bed, Romana?"

Brisa chuckles, distracted by Anuje, "Your gift from her, varishch, is there."

Romana smiles, "Some sneakies hides there for you, Anuje."

Anuje lifts her brows and crouches to look under the bed. "Oh!" She pulls out some tall, soft leather boots of a very fine suede. "Thank you, Romana... very nice. Boots for riding and boots for... uhm... walking." She grins.

Brisa grins at Anuje, "Don't mix them up, varishch... because the riding boots will leave your feet very sore if you walk long in them!"

Dominic looks up and smiles hopefully, with big, soft brown eyes, "Whuffle?" Brisa tosses her head back, laughing aloud at Dominic's horse imitation!

Benedict grins quietly. "Oh, good! I first though of Khari, then realized that the other horses would no doubt smell them as well."

Anuje laughs at Dominic. She nods to Brisa. "I'll remember. Thanks."

Romana's eyes dance, and she shakes out her long black hair, all across Brisa's lap. "For walkings. Special walks, yes?"

Anuje grins to Romana. "Special, yes. Thank you." She adds, "I have something for Khari, too... but it can wait until morning, I think." She smiles at Karen. "Khari is Brisa's horse. A very smart horse."

Brisa grins mischievously, carefully picking up an apple slice between two fingers so she doesn't rub off all the sugar -- then equally carefully leans, so she doesn't disturb Romana, to hold it out at Dominic's face level, "One for the Domi-horse, da?"

Benedict glances to Dominic, blinking, then grins. "I guess it's not just the horses who would smell them too. They are kind of strong..."

Karen nods to Anuje, leaning gently against him. "That must be nice, to be ownin' yer own horse. Come plantin' an' 'arvest, master Smith comes round with Grayflower an' we all share 'im. 'E's a fine, big, strong draft 'orse, 'e is.

Anuje hesitates a moment and then puts her arm around Karen's shoulders. "When did Dominic help your father?"

Brisa grins at Anuje, "She will be very happy, I am sure... she's never had Midwinter's gifts before except from me!" She giggles softly, adding, "She's going to be so spoiled!"

Roxanna giggles. "You mean she isn't already?" Brisa laughs! -then grins and sticks her tongue out at Roxanna!

With a playful bite Dominic leans forward and snares a happy apple desert. "Oh, it's sometimes good to be a horse!"

Brisa giggles at his nip, then grins at Dominic mischievously, "Is always good to be my lovely horse -- she is most beautiful mare in the land! -and the smartest!" She smiles as Romana shakes her glossy mane across Brisa's lap. She will, with quiet happiness, pick up a brush and enjoy herself brushing it slowly and peacefully out.

Dominic looks up and flushes, "Mare? Me?"

Brisa murmurs calmly, "You are not my horse, gospodin Domi..." there is a twinkle in her eyes as she continues, "Khari is much smarter!" She grins sideways at Dominic for a moment... then goes back contentedly to brushing Romana's hair.

Karen smiles and nods to Dominic. "Father broke his arm, working the well. Dominic got him out, and stayed around until he was better. He wasn't a good farmer, but he got folks to help us and made sure we always had food on the table till father was better."

Roxanna twitches an eyebrow in Dominic's direction. "Not quite so much a rogue as you make yourself out to be, eh?"

Anuje grins to Dominic. "Better be careful you don't get a reputation."

Dominic laughs softly, "Just don't ask how I managed to do all that good work, aye?" Anuje nods.

Brisa smiles at Anuje and Karen... then looks up at the others, "So, is anyone hungry? Am thinking maybe some stew, if there is any left?" She pauses, then adds in a curious tone of voice, "Am wondering if Reveka is still here... wonder if she would li- ah, she has family, I remember now."

Anuje nods. "Stew sounds good." She adds to Karen, "Don't you think?"

Doublebluff and stew, tales and songs, balalaikas and lutes. The night goes on, very deep into the early morning hours. Interesting discoveries are made, like two couples can dance in this room if they stay very close. That farmgirls do fall asleep in foxling laps and that all it takes is a hand in hers to make Romana smile... until the dawn comes slipping in through the window.

Anuje is asleep in the chair with Karen in her lap, her cheek resting against the top of the girl's head and an arm protectively around her. Brisa wakes up and yawns... then smiles in quiet contentment, looking around her at her peaceful friends. Hm... horses... that sounds suspiciously like an indignant whinny through the window! She shifts, carefully disentangling herself to hopefully tiptoe through the room and not wake anyone. Romana stretches and yawns, pressing her face to the window, "Look, no clouds at all..." Brisa glances at the window and holds up a finger, shushing Romana softly, then grins at Dominic.

Dominic smiles, drinking a morning sip of wine... he listens quietly and then nods, "Someone is annoyed."

Brisa grins a little guiltily, "Umm... da. I better hustle, or she'll ignore me in a huff later! Be back in a bit!" She dashes from the room after hastily grabbing an apple from the basket.

Dominic smiles and then counts... "One... two... thre-" and before he even finishes three Romana is scrabbling out of the bed, hastily throwing a tunic over her head to follow Brisa. Anuje opens her eyes a little and yawns broadly, stretching her arms, but careful not to disturb Karen. She blinks at Romana and then chuckles. Benedict remains either blissfully asleep, or at least dozing lightly with his eyes closed, but awake and a bit aware. He eases himself back towards wakefulness.

Brisa steps back into the room with Romana several minutes later, the hot, sweet smell of tshoklat and honey pastries preceding them. Brisa is practically glowing with happiness again -- she found a warm horse blanket on Khari -- a warm black with pale trim. She beams at Anuje and carefully gives her a small peck on the cheek, then hands her a steaming mug, "Spacebo from Khari, Anujishka! It is a beautiful horse rug!"

Dominic sips his wine, smiling to Benedict's resting form. "Now, laddie, how many men have had the pleasure of saying he spent Midwinter's in the company and room of four ladies..."

Benedict opens his eyes finally, and grins up to Dominic. "Three that I know of," he says, wryly if woozily -- but he's not about to make the same mistake twice. He yawns largely and sits up, stretching. "But it certainly beats spending it with the fey..." he adds in a murmur. Louder, "Did you even sleep at all?" he asks wryly.

Anuje smiles tiredly and gratefully takes the mug, careful not to spill it on the girl. She sips it and smirks at Dominic. "Not many that wouldn't have the decency to keep quiet about it, I'd fathom."

"Oh, I have died and gone to Krysta's loving embrace... tshoklat and milk, all hot?" Dominic just melts.

Roxanna stretches as she is awakened by Brisa and Romana's usual morning antics. "I suspect she'd have Khari up here with us if the innkeeper would allow it..."

Dominic smiles at Benedict's question, "No, I came from a town so small only one of us could sleep at a time, so we'd cue up by height to see who slept next... being the smallest I always slept last -- usually a week or so later."

Roxanna grins. "Oh, of course." Anuje smirks and sips her mug.

Brisa chuckles at Dominic's 'melting'... and his ever-present stories! Then she raises an eyebrow at Roxanna and grins, "But of course! Khari is quite delicate about where her pretty hooves go!"

Dominic laughs, "I did that once, and brought Valeska into the commons hall. Innkeeper said he only had rooms for two and he'd be damned if he'd lose half a room's cost to a li'l man like me. So I said fine. There will be two of us in the room."

Anuje blinks. "He let you?"

Brisa grins at Dominic, then smiles at Anuje, "Having a horse in with you, no matter where, is very warming."

Dominic laughs even louder. "Of course not... they threw me out the window, I bounced twice, and then they chased me for a league and a half. It was wonderful!"

Brisa laughs at Dominic's story, then settles comfortably on the bed, leaning against the headboard and giving Romana someone to lean against... she sips from her mug and sighs contentedly, then adds, "I still have to take the horses out for exercise. I'd thought to go up the hill, see if her ladyship up there is all right... and if a certain girl is up there, also. Anyone else want to come along?" She grins at Roxanna, "I am thinking only you have not had a chance to talk to the Lord Random yet, Roxy-varishch... want to? He is most interesting... if a little... er... um... unusual..." She grins.

Benedict looks a little nervous. "Lord Random? I haven't seen him since I... er, yelledathim." He coughs. "But it would be good to see Lady Kay; I can give her her Midwinter's gift."

Brisa chuckles at Benny, "Da... and you have several horses in the barn that are most interested in speaking -- or nibbling -- at you!"

Roxanna looks a little startled. "You're right. Everyone's told me so much about him, I'd almost forgotten that. I suppose I should. Plus, I want to have Lady Kay confirm Romana's apprenticeship." Brisa beams proudly at Romana at that!

Anuje smiles at Brisa and speaks softly, "I would, but I don't want to wake the girl... and I can't feel my legs."

Benedict chuckles softly, standing and retrieving the basket. "Well, if I'm not back in a bit, you'll know the horses are holding me against getting more of these..." He slips out, down to the stables with the basket of cinnamon-sugar apple slices.

Brisa nods to Anuje and smiles, "Is good reason to stay, varishch. Don't worry about it."

Roxanna says, "Just slide slowly out from under her. As long as you don't bounce her head on the floor, she won't wake up if those two and the food haven't done it already."

Brisa grins at everyone else, "Shall we go then? Horses are waiting!" She hmfs mock-indignantly at Roxanna!

Anuje looks torn between a chance at escape and some strange sense of duty. "Do you think it would be good? For her to wake up here alone?"

"I'm not asleep. I'm comfortable." The voice is soft, as Karen refuses to open her eyes.

Brisa chuckles softly, "Wave a mug of tshoklat under her nose, Anuje... I don't know anyone that can resist that!" Anuje blinks down at the girl. She glances at Brisa and smirks.

Dominic smiles, "I need to get her back to her father too. Bet you didn't know you actually did have a chaperone this night, did you, lad. And you know, for a gangly lad, one day you'll be a damned fine dancer, Anuje."

Anuje blushes at Dominic's comment. "Uhm... thanks, I guess."

Brisa will rise, swallowing down the last of her tshoklat, then chuckle softly at Dominic. She heads for the door and smiles, "I should go keep poor Benny from being mobbed... the rest of you come as you please, da?" She pauses at the door and adds with a smile, "Was a pleasure to meet you, dama Karen. Merry Midwinter's."

"Come, lad, let's introduce you to her father, aye? Show him that you are a nice fellow and you treated his daughter like a proper lady." Dominic stretches, watching as Karen rises and brushes out her skirts. "This was very much fun... thank ye all for such a wondrous Midwinter's, sirs and ladies."

Anuje rubs her legs and then stands, stretching, hiding a wince. "Uhm... sure." She glances at Roxanna and shrugs helplessly when Karen and Dominic aren't looking, moving a bit stiffly as she follows the two.

Benedict is down in the stables, as evenly as possible distributing the apples among the horses. He's very acutely aware of all of the horses watching him, and he almost feels like they're counting how many slices he gives to each of them. Nearby, though, is a slightly bulky yet gaily-wrapped package. Brisa grins at the vulture-intensity of the equine regard Benedict's getting, then raises an eyebrow at the package, "Schto?"

Benedict glances over to Brisa and grins at her question. "Lady Kay's gift. I'd gotten it from the room before coming down here."

Brisa laughs, eyeing it speculatively, "Hm... well, let's see... should be able to carry that, da?"

Benedict nods, "I think I'll be able to without a problem, actually." He finishes giving the last slice to Khari, and brushes his hands, looking around at the expectant mounts. "Er... I'm sorry, that's all I have..."

Brisa glances around to see if anyone's watching... if not she'll rub her palms on the bottom of the basket, then sneak over to let first Stormrunner, then Terrorfang, lick her hands clean -- she wants to see if they're still gaily bedecked with ribbons! Terrorfang looks vaguely disappointed, once again but a fierce and steady war-horse. Stormrunner is mostly undecorated, save for a few flowers in his halter and a set of ribbons in his forelock. The stable hands just smile, but they wisely don't say anything. Brisa looks faintly disappointed also, but simply croons quietly to the two stallions, "There, there... at least you let Lady Kara and my friends braid them in, da? I think she really enjoyed that." She smiles quietly as she returns... unsurprising, really. Ah well... at least now she knows what's really going on. She'll go tack up the horses that need it for everyone, then gather up the lead ropes of the others and head on out to the ziggurat.

    Bordertown: Lord Random's Tower
The inside of the tower is quite a sight. Along the perimeter a stairway rises, open and without railing until it vanishes into the floor above. But easily traversable? No. For there are stacks of true books, sheathes of paper with rocks upon them, all towering crazily as if the slightest breeze would send them tumbling. And if the tower had a far wall, it cannot be seen. Stacks and shelves run this way and that with maybe a pair of feet between them; a strange maze of learning. Scrolls are lain loose, there are barrels upon which hang syllabi, more individual sheaves of paper, rare leather-bound books. Every spare inch of this tall tower is dedicated to the collection of knowledge.

It is a very tired lady Kay who greets the group at the door to the tower. Worn; she seems to have aged even more, as if the last night's efforts had drained her very soul. With a breath, the elder Atteran slowly draws open the door. "So who is sick now, that need me dragged out in the morning too?" She just sighs. The bitterness is less though, but even Roxanna isn't sure if it's because she's tired, or if they might actually be considered somewhat helpful, if not friends.

Brisa smiles, "Merry Midwinter's, dama." She proffers a small bag of honey pastries, and a small container. When opened, the rich scent of hot tshoklat drifts out. Benedict also proffers his package to her, but politely waits for Lady Kay to not have her hands full with pastries and tshoklat before presenting it to her.

Roxanna raises an eyebrow, but decides not to make too big an issue. "Nothing new in town. The Horders were all doing relatively well when I looked in on them last. There's one thing I didn't have a chance to tell you last night, though. Romana was very helpful in identifying the poison used, and she would like to begin training as a healer." Brisa grins cheerfully at Romana.

Lady's Kay eyes just go wide..."Tshoklat, for me? It's been years..." And very gratefully she takes the two offered gifts. "Usually only Jon and I exchange gifts. Oh, we always get a load of supplies from Captain Garrick, and Reveka makes me a new tunic, but otherwise..." She shakes her head. "What disaster is going to befall me. This is all so new. Almost think She's worth forgiving." Then she turns and nods, "Come in. I have nothing for you, but I can give you Her hospitality..." Slowly she leads the troupe into the tower, to her makeshift hospice. In the open space there are now but a handful of men, some of them farmer types. "...a healer, that's nice. I've taught some of the locals about herbs and how to make a few simple salves..." Obviously the import of Roxanna's words having gone right over the Lady's head.

Brisa smiles at the tired lady, then holds the door for everyone else to precede her. Roxanna grins to herself and continues. "A healer, milady, and when the time is right, to join us."

Brisa glances around curiously, and wonders where Mordyn's holed up... she murmurs quietly to her friends, "I'll be right back... want to give the temple a quick check up..."

Roxanna says, "Don't go down alone, Brisa. Not while you-know-who is missing."

Brisa opens her mouth to reply... then simply nods, "I will do it later then." She follows the others into the tower, and nods politely to any of the farmers that glance their way as she follows the lady and her friends. At the back of Lady Kay's hall they see a portion of the hospice has been cordoned off by a heavy woolen curtain. Perhaps a part of an old Amber tent, it provides a place of privacy.

Lady Kay just turns, "You mean the lass wants to follow Her, pledge herself in Her name?"

Roxanna nods. "That she does, milady."

Sharp eyes stab out, snaring Romana. "You want to live with the sick and dying? See how cruel we can be to each other in a moment's fury? Do you want everyone calling on your aid, and not being able to refuse until you collapse from exhaustion? Do you want to hold a handsome boy while he dies and his blood is all over you, knowing that you were his only hope and still you couldn't do anything?"

Brisa frowns quietly... she shifts slightly, almost unwittingly, to stand slightly behind and next to Romana, in silent support. Benedict's breathe catches in his throat. Is this what she meant by 'the Truth'? he wonders. Then, But Romana already has done that... Roxanna nods to the Easterner, offering silent support -- but she must answer for herself this time. Romana blinks quietly. Then she looks to Brisa, just once. With a soft voice she speaks. "At least not die alone, Lady. Meant something to him, just that. And I-" she remembers another priestess' words, and how they fit, " And I... didn't want to be anywhere else, no."

Brisa smiles quietly at Romana... and makes a small promise to herself. If she doesn't want to see her two Atteran friends eaten alive by the needs of others... she'll just have to be there for them as best she can. After all, someone has to try to heal the healers, she thinks with a small, pragmatic smile to herself.

Lady Kay looks back to Roxanna, no words to the dark haired girl. "Are you saying she is ready to be taken into Our Lady's family?"

Roxanna nods. "I think so. She has already seen some of the worst of it, and she did not falter. She has the touch, as well... and in some things, more knowledge than I yet possess. Possibly more than you in a few things. Her background is... unusual."

Lady Kay just looks at Roxanna, and then to Romana. Then the older Atteran just nods -- a short jerk of her head. "Walk with me, child." Romana perks, and with a quick bounce she pads after Lady Kay. Slowly the elder lady just strolls, first walking through her hospice. She pauses at the curtain... continuing on... deeper into the tower.

Brisa watches for a moment... then nods and looks around. If there's anything that obviously needs fixing, like cleaning dishes in the kitchen, or re-rolling bandages out here, she'll quietly do it. Lady Kay finally pauses at the door to the stables. She looks quietly over her shoulder. "Come back at dawn. Then we shall know."

Benedict blinks a little at the Lady's words, and glances to Roxanna. Had the younger Atteran expected this? Roxanna nods to Brisa as they leave, encouragingly. "She'll do fine. Lady Kay will ask her some things -- exactly what will depend on the answers to the first questions -- and eventually, if she is satisfied, she'll stand a vigil, take the oaths and become one of my Sisters. I have every confidence in her."

Brisa blinks, then nods and asks, "Don't you want to talk to Lord Random though, Roxy?"

Roxanna grins. "No rush. He'll be here tomorrow."

Brisa says, "Mm... and... the girl we were looking for?"

Benedict, when there is a silent moment, nudges Brisa slightly, nodding quietly towards the curtained-partitioned space. Roxanna says, "She's back there, all right. Asleep, it looks like. Let's go look in the Temple." Benedict blinks at Roxanna, looks back at the curtain, looks to Brisa, looks back to Roxanna, opens his mouth... then closes it with an almost audible snap. With a quizzical expression he follows the other two.

Brisa smiles, "Nyeh, a moment please, Roxy. We should congratulate the dama... not just for finding her, but convincing her to... change her ways." Roxanna raises one eyebrow at that...but follows Brisa to see what will happen next. Brisa steps carefully through the patients in the main room, then into the stables, looking for Lady Kay.

A few steps in, Lady Kay turns to Brisa, "I thought I said come back on the morrow. Or can't Dayallans tell time anymore?"

Brisa smiles, taking no offense and speaking softly, "They can, dama. I simply wished to congratulate you about Mordyn, but I thought it kindest to do so away from the other patients."

Lady Kay stops then, "What do you mean?"

Brisa waves at Roxanna, "Could you close the door, please?" then continues speaking softly once the door's shut, "Convincing her to abandon Jagnar, of course, dama. I am glad to see that happen." She smiles again, then bows slightly, "I am sorry though, if my congratulations annoy, dama... I will withdraw now."

Lady Kay's eyes go wide. "She's WHAT??" And with that the Atteran turns, eyes like fire, pushing through the door back to the Hospice, "Mordyn!"

Brisa ulps... then hastily follows after, "Ahhh... dama? Dama?" On the edge of her hearing, Brisa catches a scramble of cloth... and the squeal of hinges... and a rather crude whisper, "Swiv!" Brisa blinks... then laughs and follows the lady, no longer trying to stop her.

Throwing open the curtain, Lady Kay scowls, dark and biting, angry and full of fury. The bedclothes are tumbled and the small window is open... and there is no Mordyn to be seen. Brisa nods, "Unsurprising." She turns and hastily leaves the room. As soon as she exits the tower she glances around... if Mordyn is trying to steal one of the horses Brisa will shoot her.

Roxanna says, "We'd had suspicions, and then confirmation, milady. This proves it, I think. She may have been involved in the business with the poison seasonings."

Outside, all is quiet... no horses are missing, nothing but the winter wind whistling through the ruined Temple. Brisa glances immediately to Khari -- wherever she's looking is where Brisa will look. Khari just looks up and whuffles at Brisa. It is most certainly her more apples? look. Brisa smiles -- then turns and heads back in, "She must still be in here, dama. Khari says she's not left the tower." Brisa goes back to the corner, and looks up... cautiously.

Lady Kay looks out the window and curses, and then watches Brisa return. When Brisa looks up all she sees are rafters. "Of course, Roxanna." The elder Atteran shakes her head, "Of course she would have been involved."

Roxanna says, "Of course, because of what we just told you? Or did you have some indication before?"

Brisa hms thoughtfully... then looks at Lady Kay, "Where is your brother, dama? Up? Is there a window in the room he's in?" She crosses to the window and checks it cautiously... any little bits of cloth stuck on it, or anything similar? She's surprised there even is a window in this tower.

"Upstairs, of course, and yes, there are windows all up and down the tower." Lady Kay frowns, "Why?"

Roxanna says, "I don't think that Mordyn would do anything too rash, but.. maybe we'd better check on him."

No markings on the window... Brisa nods, then leans cautiously out the window, looking first up, then down. Outside there is nothing but quiet. If there is a hint of anything, it is some brush disturbed, on the way back towards the town. Brisa steps back into the room, "Well... my guess is either she's using some form of magic I don't know and is hiding here... or she's on her way back to town." She sighs softly, then bows politely to Lady Kay, "I am ashamed, dama, at my incorrect assumptions, and at the anger I've caused you."

Lady Kay looks back quietly. "And only her Lord knows what she is going to do now..."
